What is Kakashi Hatake’s IQ?
The closest Naruto comes to grading Kakashi’s mind is a five-point stat that ties him with Shikamaru, whose IQ the series does state.

Naruto never states an IQ level for Kakashi Hatake. Its official databooks record an Intelligence stat instead — 4.5 out of 5 in the first, 5 in the later books — and the “200” that circulates for him is inferred from Shikamaru Nara’s canon line, not measured. This site’s estimated range is 160–180.

Kakashi Hatake’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate160–180Character analysis (fiction)
What the estimate rests on
  • Rated Intelligence 4.5 out of 5 in the first official databook (Rin no Sho, 2002) and 5 out of 5 in the third (Sha no Sho, 2008), where his eight-stat total is 34.5 out of 40; a fan compilation lists the second (Tō no Sho, 2005) at 5 as well.
  • Graduated from the Ninja Academy at five and was promoted to Chunin at six, according to his character profiles on MyAnimeList and Japanese Wikipedia; most summaries make him a Jonin at twelve.
  • Credited with copying more than a thousand jutsu, earning the name Copy Ninja, and with inventing his own signature technique, the lightning-based Chidori.
  • Leads Team 7 as its Jonin instructor from volume 1 and is, in Wikipedia’s account, one of the generals of the Fourth Great Ninja War.
  • Named Sixth Hokage by Tsunade after that war; in the closing volume, 72, he takes office and pardons Sasuke.

This range rates a portrayal, not a person: the databook’s 5 is a rating against other ninja on a 0.5-to-5 scale, and Kakashi’s best-documented strengths — adapting in combat, command, an enormous repertoire — are only partly what an IQ test measures. Nothing in the later databooks separates him from Shikamaru on the printed stat, so the ten-point gap between their ranges comes from the breadth of his record and is open to argument.

Background

Who Kakashi Hatake is

Kakashi Hatake is a shinobi of Konohagakure created by Masashi Kishimoto for Naruto, serialized by Shueisha in Weekly Shōnen Jump from September 21, 1999 to November 10, 2014 — 700 chapters in 72 volumes. He first appears in chapter 3, “Enter Sasuke!” (1999); chapter 4 is titled “Hatake Kakashi!”, and volume 1 was published in Japan on March 3, 2000. Studio Pierrot’s anime began on TV Tokyo on October 3, 2002, with Kakashi arriving in episode 3, and he is voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue in Japanese and Dave Wittenberg in English.

In the story he is the Copy Ninja — a Sharingan-wielding Jonin credited with copying more than a thousand jutsu — and the inventor of the lightning technique Chidori. Profiles give his Academy graduation age as five and his promotion to Chunin as six; most summaries make him a Jonin at twelve, though one CBR list says thirteen, so this page leans on the first two ages. In volume 1 he becomes the Jonin leader of Team 7, with Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, once they pass his test, and chapters 239 to 244, the Kakashi Gaiden, are given over to his own backstory. That is a prodigy’s record in the everyday sense, which is not the same thing as the genius IQ level fans usually mean.

In the Fourth Great Ninja War Kakashi is one of the generals, and in the closing volume, 72, he becomes the Sixth Hokage — named by Tsunade as her successor after the war — and pardons Sasuke, who decides to travel the world; he later passes the office to Naruto. It is a career of judgment under pressure. Adapting to an opponent mid-fight is closer to what psychologists call fluid intelligence, while a thousand copied techniques resemble stored, crystallized knowledge, and no single databook stat captures the mix.

The databook lines fans have transcribed are specific. The first book (Rin no Sho, July 2002) has Kakashi at Ninjutsu 5, Taijutsu 4, Genjutsu 4, Intelligence 4.5, Power 3.5, Speed 4, Stamina 3 and Seal 5, for 33 of 40, while Shikamaru, then a genin, totals 19 of 40 with Intelligence as his only 5. The third (Sha no Sho, September 2008) has Ninjutsu 5, Taijutsu 4.5, Genjutsu 4, Intelligence 5, Strength 3.5, Speed 4.5, Stamina 3 and Hand Seals 5, for 34.5; his profile there also lists ninja registration number 009720 and a September 15 birthday.

Kakashi Hatake: the documented record

The estimate above rests on this record. Every entry here is a matter of public fact, which is more than can be said for the number itself.

  3. 1999Naruto begins in Weekly Shōnen Jump on September 21; Kakashi first appears in chapter 3.
  4. 2000Volume 1, which includes chapter 4, “Hatake Kakashi!”, is published in Japan on March 3.
  5. July 2002Rin no Sho, the first databook, rates Kakashi’s Intelligence 4.5 out of 5, with a total of 33 out of 40.
  6. October 2002Studio Pierrot’s anime begins on TV Tokyo on October 3; Kakashi appears in episode 3.
  7. April 2005Tō no Sho, the second databook, is published; a fan compilation lists his Intelligence at 5.
  8. September 2008Sha no Sho, the third databook, gives him Intelligence 5 and a total of 34.5 out of 40.
  9. November 2014Naruto ends on November 10 with chapter 700, and in its closing volume, 72, Kakashi becomes the Sixth Hokage. Jin no Sho, the fourth databook, is published on November 4.
Where it came from

Where the 200+ figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

A cosplayer dressed as Kakashi Hatake from Naruto, photographed at MCM London Comic Con in May 2015

Kakashi’s IQ level is not a number Naruto ever supplies. The IQ line the online arguments lean on belongs to Shikamaru Nara: his teacher Asuma Sarutobi puts it at “over 200” (volume 12, chapter 107), and the figures attached to Kakashi are built on that sentence. The chain has two steps — Kakashi is smarter than Shikamaru, so Kakashi must be over 200 — and both are weaker than they sound. A CBR list asserts the first step, that Kakashi’s IQ is greater than Shikamaru’s, and cites no chapter, episode or databook; a Tumblr post arguing the same question concedes that no IQ has been confirmed for Kakashi or anyone but Shikamaru. Other press rankings give Kakashi adjectives instead of a figure and either repeat Shikamaru’s “over 200” or round it to a flat 200.

Anyone searching for a Kakashi IQ databook figure finds a stat, not an IQ. Shueisha’s four character databooks — Rin no Sho (2002), Tō no Sho (2005), Sha no Sho (2008) and Jin no Sho (2014) — score ninja in eight categories from 0.5 to 5, for a total out of 40. Fan transcriptions and a fan compilation of the first three give Kakashi’s Intelligence as 4.5, then 5, then 5, with totals of 33 in the first book and 34.5 in the third. It is a rating against other ninja, not a measurement, and turning it into an IQ means inventing the conversion: the one fan post that attempts it maps a 5 to a band of 190–210 and says outright that the numbers are not official.

The Kakashi IQ vs Shikamaru question is closer than the arguments suggest. In the first databook Shikamaru’s Intelligence is already 5 and Kakashi’s is 4.5; in the later books both sit at the maximum. Of the two, only Shikamaru has a stated figure, and it is one this site already treats as off any real scale: a score near 200 on an IQ test would lie six to seven standard deviations above the mean, beyond the range where a test can still tell people apart. Placing Kakashi above 200 because he is judged smarter than Shikamaru is a comparison made above that ceiling, on a number that was never a measurement. What the record supports is a lower range — 160–180 for Kakashi, against 150–170 for Shikamaru — with a ten-point edge to Kakashi at the midpoint that rests on the breadth of his career, not on the databook stat, which ties them.

The pattern is familiar from the franchise’s other profiles. Itachi Uchiha is on the same maximum Intelligence stat, and the IQ figures online for him also skip the stat in favor of scales invented for the purpose. Lelouch Lamperouge, from a different series, is the same finding with no stat at all: no canon number, only feats. For the general pattern, see our note on where celebrity IQ numbers come from.

The figures that circulate for Kakashi Hatake, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited200+

Where a figure for Kakashi’s IQ appears at all, it is about 200 or higher, and it is always inferred: Shikamaru Nara’s IQ is stated as over 200 in volume 12, a CBR list asserts that Kakashi’s is greater than Shikamaru’s without citing a chapter, and one Tumblr debate converts the databook’s 5 out of 5 into a 190–210 band while calling the numbers unofficial.

What we foundNo canon figure — only a databook stat

No source checked gives Kakashi Hatake an IQ. The IQ line these arguments rely on is Asuma Sarutobi’s on Shikamaru Nara (volume 12, chapter 107). The databooks rate Kakashi’s Intelligence on a 0.5-to-5 scale — 4.5 in the first book, 5 in the later ones. The Tumblr post that tries to turn that 5 into an IQ states that no IQ has been confirmed for Kakashi or anyone but Shikamaru, and that its own numbers are not official. Six outlets checked (ScreenRant, CBR, Sportskeeda, GameRant, DualShockers, Anime Explained) give Kakashi adjectives rather than a figure.

The circulating 200 sits twenty points above the top of this range and is not a measurement of anything: it is Shikamaru’s canon line carried across to a character who was never given one. As on most profiles here, the documented record supports a lower figure than the one that circulates.

Questions

Kakashi Hatake — frequently asked

What is Kakashi Hatake’s IQ?

No canon IQ exists for Kakashi Hatake: Naruto never states one. The official databooks rate his Intelligence 4.5 out of 5 in the first book and 5 in the later ones, and this site estimates a range of 160–180 from his documented record. The “200” that circulates for him is inferred from Shikamaru’s canon line, not measured.

What is Kakashi’s IQ in the Naruto databook?

The databooks give Kakashi no IQ, only an Intelligence stat: 4.5 out of 5 in the first databook, Rin no Sho (2002), and 5 out of 5 in the later books, according to fan transcriptions. It is one of eight stats, each scored from 0.5 to 5, and his total in the third databook is 34.5 out of 40. It rates him against other ninja.

Who has the higher IQ, Kakashi or Shikamaru?

Canon does not settle it. Of the two, only Shikamaru has a stated IQ (“over 200”), while the databooks put both at the maximum Intelligence stat of 5 in the later books; Shikamaru was already 5 in the first and Kakashi 4.5. This site’s estimated ranges overlap, Kakashi at 160–180 and Shikamaru at 150–170, the ten-point edge resting on Kakashi’s broader record.

Where does the Kakashi IQ of 200 come from?

It is an inference, not a canon number. Shikamaru Nara’s IQ is stated as over 200 in volume 12; a CBR list says Kakashi’s is greater than Shikamaru’s without citing a chapter; and one fan post converts the databook’s 5 out of 5 into a 190–210 band while calling it unofficial. No page checked quotes a Kakashi figure.

How does Kakashi’s estimated IQ compare with Itachi’s?

On this site Itachi Uchiha’s estimated range, 175–195, sits above Kakashi’s 160–180, although both have the maximum databook Intelligence stat of 5. The gap reflects each character’s documented feats as this site weighs them, not any canon statement about which of them is smarter.

Is Kakashi Hatake a genius?

In the story he is written as a prodigy: he graduated from the Ninja Academy at five, became a Chunin at six and, by most accounts, a Jonin at twelve, and he is credited with copying more than a thousand jutsu. Those are documented feats, not an IQ result, but they are why this site places his estimated IQ range at 160–180.

How old was Kakashi when he became a Chunin and a Jonin?

Kakashi graduated from the Ninja Academy at five and became a Chunin at six, according to his character profiles. Most summaries say he became a Jonin at twelve, although one CBR list says thirteen, so the Jonin age is the less certain of the two. None of these ages is an IQ.

How does my IQ compare with Kakashi Hatake?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.
