No Joe Rogan IQ test result from a psychologist has been published. The 127 that circulates is a certificate from a paid online test, the BMI Certified IQ Test, dated late January 2019 and reportedly posted by Rogan himself. What is documented is a 1985 graduation from Newton South High School, no completed degree and a comedy, television and podcasting career since 1988, which supports an estimated IQ of 115–130.

What the estimate rests on
  • Graduated from Newton South High School in Massachusetts in 1985, then attended the University of Massachusetts Boston and left early; no degree is reported and no entrance-exam score turned up.
  • Won the US Open taekwondo championship as a lightweight at 19 and was Massachusetts full-contact state champion four years running, per Wikipedia (citing Black Belt magazine, December 2002) and two sports sites that repeat it.
  • Gave his first stand-up set at an open-mic night at Stitches in Boston on August 27, 1988, then built a career in spoken performance: NBC’s NewsRadio (1995–1999), Fear Factor (NBC, from June 11, 2001) and the specials Triggered (2016), Strange Times (2018) and Burn the Boats (2024).
  • Has hosted The Joe Rogan Experience since its first episode on December 24, 2009; it stood at 2,555 episodes as of September 18, 2026, a long record of unscripted conversation that leans on verbal fluency.
  • Consistency check, not evidence: a certificate reporting 127 on an unproctored online test (late January 2019) and the placement of himself between 115 and 130 that EssentiallySports reports from episode #2147 (May 8, 2024) both fall inside the range.

The record holds no degree, entrance exam, rating or proctored test, and comedy, television and podcasting reward timing, persistence and on-air presence as well as ability, so the edges are soft. The range contains the reported 127 and matches the band he is reported to have given himself, but both trace to Rogan himself, the 127 from an online test with no examiner: a consistency check, not confirmation.

Background

Who Joe Rogan is

Joseph James Rogan was born on August 11, 1967, in Newark, New Jersey. He lived in San Francisco and Gainesville, Florida, as a child before settling in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, where he graduated from Newton South High School in 1985. He took up karate at 14 and taekwondo a year later; Wikipedia, citing Black Belt magazine, reports that he won the US Open taekwondo championship as a lightweight at 19 and was Massachusetts full-contact state champion for four consecutive years. He attended the University of Massachusetts Boston, left early and holds no degree; accounts differ on how long he stayed. Before comedy became his full-time work he taught martial arts at Boston University and at a school in Revere.

Rogan gave his first stand-up set at an open-mic night at a Stitches comedy club in Boston on August 27, 1988, and moved to New York City in 1990. In 1994 he moved to Los Angeles, appeared on MTV’s Half-Hour Comedy Hour and in the nine-episode Fox sitcom Hardball. He played the electrician Joe Garrelli on NBC’s NewsRadio (1995–1999, five seasons) and hosted NBC’s Fear Factor through its original six seasons (2001–2006) and again in its 2011 revival. Joe Rogan Questions Everything ran for six episodes on Syfy in 2013, and his stand-up specials include Rocky Mountain High (2014), Triggered (2016), Strange Times (2018) and Burn the Boats (2024).

Rogan began working for the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1997 as a backstage and post-fight interviewer; his first show was UFC 12 in Dothan, Alabama, on February 7, 1997. He left after about two years, and after Zuffa took over the UFC in 2001 its new president, Dana White, offered him a color commentator’s job. UFC 37.5, at the Bellagio in Las Vegas on June 22, 2002, was the first UFC event to feature him in that role, so the interviewing began in 1997 and the commentary in 2002.

The Joe Rogan Experience began in December 2009 as a weekly Ustream broadcast with the comedian Brian Redban; its first episode aired live on December 24, 2009, and by August 2010 it had taken its current name, after The Jimi Hendrix Experience. As of September 18, 2026 it had 2,555 episodes; Apple Podcasts listed episodes through #2558 on September 26, 2026.

Where it came from

Where the 127 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Joe Rogan performing stand-up comedy with a microphone

The Joe Rogan IQ score that circulates is 127, and it has a document behind it, which is rare for a celebrity IQ number. ACIS describes a widely circulated screenshot of a certificate, headed Brain Metrics Initiative and dated late January 2019, that reports 127 on the BMI Certified IQ Test, with the caption “I legitimately thought I was dumber.” Rogan Tribe and EssentiallySports say Rogan posted it on Instagram; check-iq.org links a photo post on his Facebook page whose address includes “i-legitimately-thought-i-was-dumber”. We could not read either, so the certificate’s wording rests on ACIS’s description. The earliest page we could open is a Sherdog forum thread that began on January 31, 2019 under the title “Do you appreciate Rogan more with a confirmed 127 IQ?”; it links to no original post, and some replies question the vendor.

Qualifiers fall away as the number moves between sites. iqtesta.com, headed “Alpha High IQ Society”, prints “Joe Rogan owns an IQ of 127” with no test, date or source. CelebrityIQ.info says he is “estimated at approximately 127” and names no test, LifeScore calls the 127 an editorial estimate and says no verified result is cited, and MyIQScores lists 115–125 as an unverified estimate. A June 2023 Substack post by Sebastian Jensen starts from the premise that Rogan “has done an actual IQ test (127)”. For how such figures get made, see where celebrity IQ numbers come from.

The Joe Rogan IQ test behind the 127 is the BMI Certified IQ Test, and what it is matters more than the number. ACIS describes it as a consumer product sold online, with results unlocked by payment (Rogan Tribe puts it at $20 and 20 minutes), and says the vendor’s own terms offer no guarantee of validity or accuracy, rule out diagnostic use and limit access to entertainment. ACIS also says it could locate no technical manual, norm sample description or reliability evidence, and contrasts the test with an examiner-given one, where a qualified examiner works one to one with the person for roughly two hours (compare the WAIS-IV and WAIS-5 explained). To weigh a result like this, see what to check before trusting an online IQ score. None of this shows that 127 is wrong; it shows that nothing checks it.

Rogan’s own remarks are more modest than the internet’s. On episode #2147 of his podcast, released May 8, 2024 with the guest Mike Baker, the transcript has him saying that most people fall between 85 and 115 and that he is “in that sweet zone between 115 and 130”, then that he once took a test at 2:00 in the morning and was “happy with my score.” The passage does not include 127, and the transcript text we could read shows no speaker names, so the attribution rests on the flow of the conversation and on EssentiallySports’ account. On a 15-point scale 115 is one standard deviation above the average, roughly one person in six, and 130 is two, roughly one in 44 (see how rare a high IQ score is); 127 would be 1.8, roughly one in 28, near an IQ of 125. Joe Rogan’s estimated IQ here, 115–130, sits level with Ashton Kutcher’s 115–130 and 20 points below Conan O’Brien’s 135–150 at each end, a gap that follows the records: a Harvard degree against none. Jordan Peterson’s 150 is also self-reported, but as a recollection of an unnamed test, not a certificate for a named one.

The only test named anywhere is the paid online BMI Certified IQ Test. A search for Joe Rogan IQ Reddit returned no Reddit page we could open; the Facebook post returned nothing readable and no Instagram address turned up.

SecondaryACIS, “Joe Rogan IQ: 127 from a test he bought online”

Says a widely circulated screenshot shows a certificate headed Brain Metrics Initiative, naming Joseph Rogan, with 127 on the BMI Certified IQ Test, version 2.0, dated late January 2019 (its summary line says 2018). Reports the caption “I legitimately thought I was dumber”, describes the test as a consumer product sold online, quotes the vendor’s terms (no guarantee of validity or accuracy, not diagnostic, entertainment only) and says it could locate no manual, norm sample description or reliability evidence. Both print 127. Rogan Tribe names the BMI Certified IQ Test, says it costs $20 and takes 20 minutes, and credits the Joe Rogan Instagram page. check-iq.org says the figure came from Rogan’s Facebook, rates that source Medium confidence and links a photo post whose address includes i-legitimately-thought-i-was-dumber; the link returned nothing readable. Neither gives a date for the post.

Aggregatoriqtesta.com (headed “Alpha High IQ Society”); CelebrityIQ.info; LifeScore (last reviewed August 2026); MyIQScores; The Anime Elitist (Sebastian Jensen, “Estimating the IQ of Joe Rogan”, June 23, 2023)

iqtesta.com prints “Joe Rogan owns an IQ of 127” with no test, date or source. CelebrityIQ.info says he is “estimated at approximately 127” and names no test. LifeScore calls 127 “a LifeScore editorial estimate” and says no independently verified result is cited. MyIQScores lists 115–125, calls it an unverified estimate and names no test or date. The Substack post treats 127 as “an actual IQ test”. None of the five gives a proctored result.

SecondaryEssentiallySports (Himanga Mahanta), May 10, 2024, on The Joe Rogan Experience #2147

Reports that Rogan scored 127 on a Brain Metrics test in 2019, gives the Instagram caption “I legitimately thought I was dumber”, and quotes him telling the guest Mike Baker that he sits “in that sweet zone between 115 and 130”. Links no original post. Only its statements about Rogan’s own test are used.

PrimaryThe Joe Rogan Experience #2147 – Mike Baker (released May 8, 2024): transcripts on Podscripts and Happyscribe; JRE Library episode page

Both transcripts carry “in that sweet zone between 115 and 130” at about the twelve-minute mark, followed by “I took one at 02:00 in the morning and I wasn’t even awake” and “I’m happy with my score”. The number 127 is not in the passage read, and the transcript text we could read shows no speaker names, so attribution to Rogan rests on the flow of the exchange and on EssentiallySports. Zaino III, “Q&A with Joe Rogan” (September 11, 2008)

Sports Illustrated says Rogan landed a gig as the UFC’s backstage interviewer in 1997 and later moved cageside after meeting Dana White. Sportskeeda, dated June 22, 2021, puts his commentary debut at UFC 37.5 “19 years ago today” (June 22, 2002) and says his first appearance was as an interviewer at UFC 12. The Globe says he went to Newton South High School and taught martial arts at Boston University and at a school in Revere before giving comedy his full attention; it gives no graduation year.

SecondaryBJJEE, “Flashback: Joe Rogan Wins by Spinning Back Kick KO in Taekwondo Match” (September 21, 2020); EssentiallySports on his taekwondo record (March 31, 2025) and his education (December 16, 2024)

The taekwondo pages repeat Wikipedia’s account: US Open champion as a lightweight at 19, four straight years as Massachusetts full-contact champion; BJJEE dates the knockout in its footage to 1987, and neither gives a year for the title. The education page says he has no degrees and spent “a few years” at the University of Massachusetts Boston, a length other accounts dispute, so no duration is given.

The evidence

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for Joe Rogan, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited127

The figure that circulates for Joe Rogan is 127. ACIS and Rogan Tribe describe it as his result on the BMI Certified IQ Test, and EssentiallySports as a Brain Metrics test, from a certificate dated late January 2019 that he reportedly posted with the caption “I legitimately thought I was dumber” (Instagram, per Rogan Tribe and EssentiallySports; check-iq.org links a Facebook post). A band also circulates: on episode #2147 of his podcast (May 8, 2024) he is reported to have placed himself between 115 and 130, and MyIQScores lists an unverified 115–125.

What we foundA self-posted online result, not a proctored test

No IQ test administered by a psychologist has been published for Joe Rogan; the 127 comes from a paid online test with no examiner. ACIS says the certificate names Joseph Rogan and reports 127 on the BMI Certified IQ Test, version 2.0, that the vendor’s terms give no guarantee of validity or accuracy, rule out diagnostic use and limit the test to entertainment, and that it could locate no manual, norm sample or reliability evidence. We could not read the original post (the Facebook link on check-iq.org returned nothing readable, and no page gave an Instagram address) or the vendor’s site (HTTP 403), so the certificate’s details rest on ACIS and the pages that repeat it. Qualifiers fall away as the number moves: iqtesta.com prints “Joe Rogan owns an IQ of 127” with no test, date or source; CelebrityIQ.info says “estimated at approximately 127” and names no test; LifeScore calls it “a LifeScore editorial estimate”; a June 2023 Substack post treats it as “an actual IQ test”. No page we opened shows a proctored result.

The circulating number sits inside this site’s range, near its top, which is unusual: most figures here land well above what the record supports. That is not confirmation. Three numbers that agree are not three checks: Joe Rogan’s estimated IQ of 115–130 is inferred from a record, the 127 is one online test, and the podcast band is his own placement of himself.

Questions

Joe Rogan — frequently asked

What is Joe Rogan’s IQ?

No IQ test administered by a psychologist has been published for Joe Rogan, so his IQ is unknown. The 127 that circulates comes from a paid online test, the BMI Certified IQ Test, on a certificate dated late January 2019, and on his podcast in May 2024 he reportedly placed himself between 115 and 130. Our estimate, inferred from his record, is 115–130.

Did Joe Rogan take an IQ test?

Yes, an online one, according to a certificate he reportedly posted: it reports 127 on the BMI Certified IQ Test, dated late January 2019. On episode #2147 (May 8, 2024) he said he took a test at 2:00 in the morning and was “happy with my score”. No proctored test or examiner’s report has been published.

Is Joe Rogan’s IQ score really 127?

It is unverified. The Joe Rogan IQ score of 127 comes from an online test with no examiner whose own terms, as ACIS reports them, give no guarantee of validity or accuracy and limit it to entertainment. It falls inside our 115–130 estimate, so it is plausible, but a plausible number from an unchecked test is not a measurement.

What is Joe Rogan’s education?

Joe Rogan graduated from Newton South High School in Massachusetts in 1985 and attended the University of Massachusetts Boston, which he left early; he holds no degree, and accounts differ on how long he stayed. His first stand-up set was on August 27, 1988.

Is Joe Rogan smart?

Whether Joe Rogan is intelligent in the sense an IQ test measures is unknown, because no proctored result exists. What is documented is a career in spoken language: stand-up since 1988, NBC’s NewsRadio and Fear Factor, UFC commentary from 2002 and 2,555 podcast episodes as of September 18, 2026. Our estimate is 115–130, above average.

How is Joe Rogan so smart?

No source explains it, and the premise is untested because no proctored IQ result exists. What the record shows is practice rather than a credential: stand-up since 1988, television and UFC work from the 1990s and 2000s, and 2,555 podcast episodes as of September 18, 2026, all without a completed degree.

How does Joe Rogan’s estimated IQ compare with Conan O’Brien’s?

IQ Metrics places Joe Rogan’s estimated IQ range of 115–130 twenty points below Conan O’Brien’s 135–150, with no overlap. Both are comedy performers who became podcast hosts, but O’Brien’s range rests on a Harvard degree (magna cum laude, 1985) and the Lampoon presidency; Rogan has no completed degree. Both are inferences from records, not test scores.

How does my IQ compare with Joe Rogan?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other actors profiles, starting with Natalie Portman.
