What is Lisa Kudrow’s IQ?
She was headed for her father’s headache clinic, not a sitcom set, and the 154 beside her name has no test behind it.

No published IQ test result exists for Lisa Kudrow. The 154 that circulates comes from celebrity-IQ pages that name no test, date or examiner; what is documented is a Vassar biology degree (class of 1985), a credit on a 1994 headache-research paper and a 1998 Emmy for Friends, which together support an estimated IQ of about 125–140.

Lisa Kudrow’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate125–140Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology from Vassar College, class of 1985, taken with the plan of doing headache research alongside her father, a headache specialist.
  • Credited as L. V. Kudrow, last of four authors, on “Handedness and headache” in Cephalalgia (February 1994), a study of 199 male and 74 female cluster headache patients and 477 migraine patients.
  • A place in the main company of The Groundlings, the Los Angeles improv and sketch comedy theater, won after taking classes there.
  • The 1998 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Friends, and co-creator credits on The Comeback (HBO, 2005) and Web Therapy (from 2008).

A bachelor’s degree with no honors that we could find, a fourth-author paper credit and a comedy career are real and checkable, but none is a test result, and comic and producing success draws on timing, craft and luck as much as on anything an IQ test isolates. The range is deliberately loose, and it sits below those of Mayim Bialik, Natalie Portman and Jodie Foster, whose academic records are stronger.

Background

Who Lisa Kudrow is

Lisa Kudrow was born on July 30, 1963 in Encino, a neighborhood of Los Angeles, and went to Taft High School in Woodland Hills. Her father, Lee Kudrow, worked as a headache specialist and researcher; Europe PMC lists more than twenty papers with his name dated 1981 to 1995, most of them on cluster headache, among them Response of cluster headache attacks to oxygen inhalation in Headache (1981). That was the field she meant to enter. In her 2010 commencement address at Vassar she said she found biology in high school and had a job lined up with her father.

At Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, she majored in biology and graduated with the class of 1985. Sources label the degree differently, a B.A. on Wikipedia and Wikidata and a B.S. on the Television Academy’s biography, and we found no honors designation, so this profile says only “a biology degree”. By her own account she had nothing to do with acting at Vassar; she began work with her father on a study of hemispheric dominance and headache types, and by November 1985 had declared that she would pursue acting. In a 2012 Television Academy Foundation interview she describes the move from biomedical-engineering ambitions to acting.

The research she planned left a credit in the literature. Handedness and headache, in Cephalalgia 14(1):64–67 (February 1994), lists four authors: H. B. Messinger, M. I. Messinger, L. Kudrow and L. V. Kudrow. Wikipedia, which gives her full name as Lisa Valerie Kudrow, cites the paper for her research credit and says she worked for her father for eight years while breaking into acting; her own description of a study of hemispheric dominance and headache types, done with him, fits it. The paper reports a California handedness study of 199 male and 74 female cluster headache patients and 477 migraine patients: left-handedness was 11.0 percent in the men with cluster headache and 8.2 percent in the women, not significantly different from the expected 10 percent and lower than the over-15-percent rate in earlier reported data. It is a real, peer-reviewed credit and a modest one, fourth of four authors on a short epidemiological study.

With encouragement from Jon Lovitz she took improv classes and won a place in the main company of The Groundlings, the Los Angeles improv and sketch comedy theater. Guest roles on Cheers and a recurring part as Ursula Buffay on Mad About You led to Phoebe Buffay on Friends, which ran from 1994 to 2004 and earned her the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1998. She played Michele in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (1997), co-created The Comeback (HBO, 2005) with Michael Patrick King, co-created and starred in the improvised Web Therapy (online from 2008, on Showtime from 2011) and served as an executive producer of the US edition of Who Do You Think You Are?. The Television Academy lists 17 Emmy nominations for her, one of them the 1998 win.

Where it came from

Where the 154 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Lisa Kudrow photographed in March 2010

The Lisa Kudrow IQ 154 figure has no test behind it, and the trail runs out quickly. The earliest dated page we opened is TheThings, from October 29, 2020, which says she is “eligible” for Mensa International and has an IQ “of over 154”, and links that sentence to a Hollywood.com slideshow, 21 Celebrities With Surprisingly High IQs. We could read the slideshow’s introduction but not its Kudrow entry, so what that entry cites, if anything, is unknown. Every other page we opened carries the number with no first source at all (see where celebrity IQ numbers come from).

The other pages repeat it under different labels. check-iq.org, published on July 7, 2024 and updated on August 22, 2024, states it as fact, credits “Harper’s Bazaar and The Mirror” without dates, and adds that she “would also easily get into Mensa”. celebrityiqs.com puts 154 in a table beside a notice that its scores are “not guaranteed” and “for entertainment purposes only”. celebrityiq.info calls it an estimate “compiled from public sources”, and thegeniusindex.com says it is “widely reported”. iqtesta.com and sociosite.net print it flat as her IQ score, with no source. TheThings and sociosite.net also call her degree psychobiology; Vassar’s own newsletter and the Television Academy say biology.

The number is also hard to defend on its own terms. A 154 is 3.6 standard deviations above the average of 100 on a 15-point scale, roughly one person in 6,000, a height where the ceiling effect and wide error margins make any single score less reliable. The Mensa line proves less than it seems: Mensa’s own site sets entry at the upper 2 percent on an approved, supervised test, a far lower bar than 154 (see Mensa score requirements), and no page says she took that test or joined. “Eligible” describes a hypothetical, not a membership. The same 154 also circulates for Sharon Stone, whose Mensa claim was publicly disputed; nothing ties Kudrow’s number to hers, but a 154 paired with a Mensa line is a pattern worth noticing.

Any Lisa Kudrow IQ level has to be inferred from the record, and the record is more specific than the number. A biology degree shows she completed a demanding course of study, the paper credit shows she took part in real research, and a comedy career built on improvisation and writing shows verbal and creative skill; none of them is a score, and IQ tests capture only part of what each one requires. Placed against the other actors here, that supports a range below Mayim Bialik’s 140–155, since her completed neuroscience doctorate is the stronger academic record. It also sits a step below Natalie Portman (135–145), who paired a Harvard degree with a paper published while still at school, and Jodie Foster (130–145), who also graduated in 1985 but magna cum laude. The error runs in the usual direction: the record supports a lower range than 154, not a higher one.

The abstract gives the sample (199 male and 74 female cluster headache patients, 477 migraine patients) and the handedness rates. Wikipedia, which gives her full name as Lisa Valerie Kudrow, cites this paper for her research credit; the journal record itself gives only initials.

InstitutionalVassar College alumnae/i newsletter, May 2010: “Lisa Kudrow ’85” named commencement speaker

Confirms class of 1985, a biology degree, the 146th commencement on May 23, 2010 and her seat on the college’s Board of Trustees since 2004 (as of that date). It gives no honors and no degree abbreviation.

Most widely cited154

Ask what the IQ of Lisa Kudrow is and the pages that answer give 154, sometimes as “over 154” or “approximately 154”, and often with a line that she would qualify for Mensa. The figure appears on TheThings (October 2020), check-iq.org, celebrityiqs.com, celebrityiq.info, thegeniusindex.com, iqtesta.com and sociosite.net.

What we foundNo test result behind the 154

No Lisa Kudrow IQ test result has been published, and none of the seven pages carrying the 154 names a test, a date or an examiner. check-iq.org credits “Harper’s Bazaar and The Mirror” but gives no dates, so the citation cannot be followed. TheThings links its 154 to a Hollywood.com slideshow whose Kudrow entry we could not retrieve. celebrityiqs.com says its scores are “not guaranteed” and “for entertainment purposes only”, and celebrityiq.info calls its number an estimate. What can be checked is the record: Vassar lists her as class of ’85 with a biology degree, and a 1994 journal paper carries the credit “L. V. Kudrow”.

The 154 sits 14 points above the top of the range her record supports, and it rests on no test. Several pages set it beside her degree, as if a biology major and an IQ score were the same evidence; as with most profiles here, the documented record points lower than the number in circulation.

Questions

Lisa Kudrow — frequently asked

What is Lisa Kudrow’s IQ?

No published IQ test result exists for Lisa Kudrow, so there is no measured score. The 154 that circulates comes from celebrity-IQ pages that cite no test, date or examiner. Our estimate of 125–140 is inferred from her Vassar biology degree, a 1994 research-paper credit and her career, not from a test.

Is Lisa Kudrow’s IQ 154?

There is no evidence that it is. The Lisa Kudrow IQ 154 figure appears on TheThings, check-iq.org, celebrityiqs.com and other pages, but none names a test, and one says its scores are for entertainment purposes only. A 154 would be about 3.6 standard deviations above average, well beyond what her documented record can support.

Did Lisa Kudrow take an IQ test?

There is no public record that she did. No Lisa Kudrow IQ test result has been published by her, a testing body or a psychologist, and none of the pages quoting 154 names a test. Her documented record is a Vassar biology degree, a research-paper credit and an Emmy-winning comedy career.

Is Lisa Kudrow in Mensa?

There is no record of it. Some pages say she is “eligible” for Mensa, which describes a hypothetical score rather than membership; none says she took Mensa’s test or joined. Mensa’s own site sets entry at the upper 2 percent on an approved, supervised intelligence test.

What did Lisa Kudrow study at Vassar?

She studied biology at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and graduated with the class of 1985. She has said she had a job lined up with her father, a headache specialist, and took no part in acting at Vassar. Sources differ on whether the degree was a B.A. or a B.S.

Did Lisa Kudrow really co-author a scientific paper?

Yes, she is credited as one of four authors. The 1994 paper “Handedness and headache” in Cephalalgia lists L. Kudrow (her father, Lee) and L. V. Kudrow, the credit Wikipedia cites for her. It compared handedness in 199 male and 74 female cluster headache patients and 477 migraine patients.

How does Lisa Kudrow’s estimated IQ compare with Mayim Bialik’s?

IQ Metrics places Kudrow’s estimated IQ range of 125–140 below Mayim Bialik’s 140–155. Bialik holds a completed neuroscience doctorate from UCLA (2007), a stronger academic record than Kudrow’s bachelor’s degree, one authorship credit and comedy career. Neither range comes from an IQ test.

How does my IQ compare with Lisa Kudrow?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other actors profiles, starting with Natalie Portman.
