Pooled analyses of handedness and cognitive ability keep landing in the same place: an average difference near zero, small enough that no individual conclusion can be drawn from which hand someone writes with.
The claim has a long life because it is flattering, cheap to repeat and easy to decorate with examples. Left-handers are supposed to be more creative, better at spatial tasks, overrepresented among the brilliant. The research literature on handedness and measured ability is unusually large, and what it mostly reports is an absence.
Handedness and cognitive ability has been studied for decades across many samples and several countries, and the finding that survives meta-analysis is a difference close to zero. Pooled estimates put the average gap on the order of a point on a mean-100, standard-deviation-15 scale, with some analyses reporting a very small advantage to right-handers rather than left-handers.
Set that against the precision of the instruments. A well-normed test reports a standard error of measurement of roughly 2 to 3 points for a full-scale score, which puts a 95 per cent confidence interval around 5 to 6 points wide either side. A group difference of about one point is comfortably inside the noise attached to any single person's score. Even if the pooled estimate is real as a population average, it is unusable as information about anybody.
A difference of about one point, on an instrument whose own error band is five, is not a fact about anyone. It is a rounding artefact with a press release.
The standard evidence for the myth is a roll call. It fails on base rates. Roughly one person in ten is left-handed, so in any set of a hundred eminent people, around ten left-handers is the expected number rather than a surprise. Producing that list and presenting it as a pattern is selecting on the outcome and then counting — the same error our piece on where celebrity IQ figures come from traces through a different myth.
The test a claim like this has to pass is comparison against the base rate, not accumulation of examples. If left-handers were genuinely overrepresented among the eminent, the share of left-handers in that group would have to exceed roughly one in ten by a margin larger than sampling variation. Lists do not establish that, and a list can always be assembled for any trait held by ten per cent of the population.
There is a more careful result in this area, and it is about spread rather than average. Non-right-handedness appears somewhat more frequently at both ends of several distributions than a simple average comparison would suggest — a variability observation, not a superiority one. A group can have the same mean as another and a wider spread, which produces more people at the top and more at the bottom simultaneously.
That distinction is routinely lost in reporting, because the top tail is the interesting half. "More left-handers among the highest scorers" is repeated; "and among the lowest" is dropped; and the pair together, which is the actual finding, becomes a claim about being smarter. Three questions settle most of them. How was handedness classified, and would a different reasonable definition change the groups? How large is the reported difference in the units of the test, rather than as a statistical significance claim? And is the comparison against the base rate, or is it a list of examples? A significant result in a very large sample can be a fraction of a point, which is a genuine finding about populations and no guidance at all for a person. Handedness is a genuinely interesting biological trait. It is simply not a proxy for anything about ability.

The evidence for a general advantage on spatial or creative measures is weak and inconsistent. Where differences are reported they are small and often do not replicate, and definitions of creativity vary enough between studies that results are hard to pool.
Some research reports non-right-handedness appearing somewhat more often at both the high and low ends of several distributions — a statement about greater variability, not a higher average. It is frequently reported as though only the upper tail existed, which turns a variability finding into a superiority claim it does not support.
