IQ Metrics for Business · Hiring assessment platform

Pre-employment assessments your whole hiring team runs from one dashboard

Build a short cognitive ability test for a role from numerical, verbal, logical and abstract reasoning, invite candidates by email, from a list or through a public link, and compare the results side by side. Recruiters do all of it themselves, with no developer in the loop.

  • Work accounts only
  • No webcam, no screen recording
  • A sandbox for every account
The basics

What is a pre-employment assessment?

A pre-employment assessment is a short, timed test that shows how well a job candidate reasons with numbers, words, rules and patterns. Employers use these cognitive ability tests early in hiring, before interviews, to compare every applicant on the same job-relevant skills instead of on a résumé or CV alone.

Each of our tests takes 10 to 20 minutes in the browser, on any device. Every candidate gets a score by category, a band and a rank, so your team can shortlist fairly and ask better interview questions.

The company dashboard

A hiring assessment platform for the whole team

Six areas, one sign-in, for every step of pre-employment testing. Each person sees the pages their role allows, in the sandbox first and in live mode once your company is checked.

Set up a role once, reuse it for every candidate

  • Start fast. Pick a ready-made test, a role template that combines tests, or build your own from the categories: 5 to 40 questions in each, the difficulty and the time limit.
  • Add your own questions. Sections drawn from your company’s question library sit beside ours in the same test.
  • Warnings as you build. Too few questions for a reliable score, a test over 40 minutes, or timing that is too tight.
  • Rules for each assessment. Whether candidates can go back and mark questions for review, the deadline, the gap before a retake, and where candidates land when they finish.
  • Safe to change. A change makes a new version. Candidates who have started keep the version they started.
How it works

How to run pre-employment tests in three steps

Set up an assessment once for a role, then use it for every candidate who applies. Most teams do it in an afternoon, starting in the sandbox.

  1. Build the assessment

Start from a ready-made test or a role template, or build your own: the categories, the number of questions in each, the difficulty and the time limit. Add sections from your own question library if you have one.

  2. Invite candidates

One person, a CSV list, or a public link in your job advert. We email each candidate a personal link in your brand. Candidates need no account and no download.

  3. Compare and decide

A result is ready the moment a candidate finishes: overall and by category, rank, time used and integrity signals. Compare candidates, move them through your hiring stages, and hand the manager a PDF with interview questions.

The tests

Cognitive ability tests for hiring: numerical, verbal, logical and abstract reasoning

Each ready-made test takes 10 to 20 minutes. Combine them for a role, build a custom test from the categories, or add questions your company wrote. Candidates are far more likely to finish a shorter assessment, so the builder flags anything over 40 minutes.

Your own questions

Add what only your company can ask

A question library for the things our tests cannot cover: your products, your safety rules, the software your team uses. Write questions in the editor with a live preview of what the candidate will see, or upload a CSV, or paste rows from Excel.

  • Four formats: one right answer, true or false, a number, or pictures as answers, each with an optional picture above it.
  • Skills group your questions into sections you add to any assessment beside ours.
  • Checked before anything is saved. An upload is read row by row, the good rows are added together, and the bad rows come back with their fix.
  • Your results show your questions. A candidate’s Test activity opens each of your questions to its text, their answer and the right one. Nothing of yours is ever shared with another company.

For your candidates

A candidate assessment that works on any device

Candidates remember how you tested them. The test page is calm, clear and quick to start, in your company’s brand.

  • A practice tour first

Before the clock starts, a few practice questions show every control: the map, marking a question, going back. Never a right or wrong, so nobody expects answers in the real test.

  • Any device, no account

Computers, tablets and phones. On a phone the question comes first, with the progress and the time in a slim bar above it.

  • Moves freely, if you allow it

Previous and Next, a map of every question, mark for review and a review screen at the end, when the assessment allows going back.

  • Picks up where they left off

If a tab closes or the connection drops, the same link continues at the same question, and the clock keeps its place.

  • Accessible

Built for keyboard and screen-reader use, with 25%, 50% or 100% extra time for candidates who need it.

  • A voice for candidates

Anyone can report a question they think is wrong, and leave a rating and a comment at the end, which you see on their result.

What you receive

Assessment results your hiring team can read and explain

Every score follows published rules, so you can tell a manager, a candidate or an auditor exactly how it was reached.

  • Scores overall and by category

Correct answers out of the total, with a plain-language band: below typical, typical, above typical or well above. Sections from your own questions say so.

  • Rank and percentile

Rank among the candidates of the same assessment, and a percentile against a named comparison group, with its size. A group stays marked provisional while it is small.

  • Integrity signals, in words

What happened during the test, written as sentences for you to judge. They never change a score.

  • Test activity

Pace by category against the usual time, each question’s time, time away, answer changes, the device and network, and the candidate’s own feedback.

  • A PDF for the hiring manager

A summary page, what each category measures, and interview questions for the weaker areas. For a campus drive, what happened on the day.

  • Excel, CSV and the API

Export a list of results as Excel or CSV, and read every result as JSON through the API.

Never an IQ number, and never an automatic rejection. Bands and percentiles come only from measured data, so a new or custom test shows scores and rank until its comparison group exists. A person makes every hiring decision.

Campus drives

Campus and graduate recruiting: test a whole room of students

For campus and graduate recruiting, where students sit the test on college computers, there is no email and often no personal device. A drive runs the room from one page.

  1. Upload the student list

A CSV of roll numbers and names, checked whole, with every problem named by line. Each student gets a seat.

  2. Print the admit slips

An A4 PDF, six slips a page, each with the student’s access code. Codes can be made again at any time.

  3. Open the drive

Students open the drive’s page and type their roll number, the code on their slip and the room code on the screen.

  4. Watch the live board

Who has signed in, who is writing and who needs attention. Pause everyone, add time with a reason, unlock a seat or allow a move to another computer.

  5. Read the results by drive

The candidates list narrowed to the drive, a CSV with roll numbers, and what happened on the day in each report.

  • Network lock, if you want it. Only the college’s own connection can sign in. Off by default, and the board says so while it is off.
  • A pass for the teacher. A link and a 6-digit PIN open the board for a supervisor without an account.
  • Restart fresh or another day. A test restarted gets a new paper. A drive moved to another day keeps every student’s time left.
  • Nothing stored in the clear. Codes and PINs are sealed, the board never shows a score or an email, and five wrong tries lock a seat, never the room.
Integrity

Cheating prevention for online tests, without a webcam

Anyone can paste a question into a chatbot or ask a friend for help. The test page is built to make that slow and visible, with no webcam and no screen recording.

One question at a time

Each question comes from our server only when it is needed, and answers are scored on the server. The whole test is never in the page.

A different test for each candidate

Questions are drawn from a larger pool. The least-shown come first, and questions a candidate has seen before are left out whenever the pool allows.

A clock the browser can’t change

The timer runs on our server. If the connection drops, the same link continues where the candidate stopped, and the clock keeps running.

Copy, paste and screenshots

Copying a question or pasting an answer is blocked. Right-clicks, screenshot keys and print or save keys are counted, never what was typed.

Signals you can review

Leaving the page and for how long, leaving full screen, a change of device or network, answer changes, and answers faster than the question could be read.

Questions that stay sound

Every new question is reviewed, then tried unscored before it counts. Questions that turn out too easy, too hard or too widely seen are flagged.

Signals, not proof. A signal never changes a score. It tells you what to ask about, and a person decides what it means.

Team and security

Candidate data security: work accounts and two-step sign-in

Company accounts hold candidates’ personal data, so we are strict about who gets in and careful with what they can see.

How sign-up and sign-in work

  1. Work email only

Sign up with your company address. Personal, temporary and forwarding addresses are turned away in words that say what to do.

  2. A code by email

We send a 6-digit code to that address to prove it is yours. Nothing happens until it is entered, and there is no password.

  3. Two-step sign-in

Every user adds an authenticator app, and each sign-in asks for its code. One-time recovery codes cover a lost phone.

  4. Your company, your team

The first person from your domain creates the company and is its admin. Colleagues are invited by email with a role, or ask to join and an admin decides.

  5. A check before live tests

New companies use the sandbox at once, with sample questions. Live mode opens once our team has checked the company.

Sign-in is rate-limited by inbox, network and domain, so scripted and spam sign-ups are turned away.

Roles

  • AdminEverything, including the team, the settings and the developer pages.
  • RecruiterCreates assessments, invites candidates and sees results.
  • ViewerSees assessments, candidates and results. Changes nothing.
  • DeveloperAPI keys, webhooks and logs. Never sees candidates or results.

How your data is protected

  • Each company’s data is kept apart. Every record carries its company, and nothing can read another company’s data.

  • Delete a candidate and everything linked to them at any time, and set how long results are kept.

  • An audit log records keys, team changes, extra time, exports and deletions, with who did it and why.

  • A data processing agreement your admin accepts in the dashboard, since we hold candidates’ data for you.

For your developers

Connect your ATS: everything in the dashboard is in the API too

Connect your applicant tracking system (ATS) or HR platform: create assessments, invite candidates and receive a signed webhook the moment a result is ready. Candidates invited through the API appear in the same dashboard.

Questions

Pre-employment testing: questions companies ask

What is the difference between a cognitive ability test and an IQ test?

An IQ test estimates general intelligence and reports one IQ number. A pre-employment cognitive ability test measures the reasoning a job needs, such as working with figures, reading closely or spotting patterns, and reports a score for each area. Our business tests are cognitive ability tests for hiring, with their own questions, kept apart from the IQ Metrics IQ test for individuals. Results are scores, bands, rank and percentiles, never an IQ number.

Which test should we use for a role?

Start with General Aptitude for most roles. Add Numerical Reasoning where the job works with figures and tables, Verbal Reasoning where it reads policies or writes to customers, Logical or Abstract Reasoning for problem-solving and technical roles, and Attention to Detail for data entry and checking work. Role templates combine these for common jobs.

How long should a pre-employment test be?

Short enough that good candidates finish it. Each ready-made test takes 10 to 20 minutes, and the assessment builder warns you when an assessment goes over 40 minutes, because longer tests lose more candidates before the end.

Do cognitive ability tests predict job performance?

Hiring research counts reasoning tests among the better single predictors of how someone will do in a job, especially in roles that need learning and problem-solving, and they work best beside a structured interview. That is why each report includes interview questions for the weaker areas, and why a score is one input among several, never the only reason for a decision.

Is it legal to use cognitive ability tests or IQ tests in hiring?

Yes, in the United States and Europe, when the test measures abilities the job needs and every candidate takes it the same way. In the United States, an employer should be able to show that a test is job-related, and should check that it does not screen out one group far more often than another; the four-fifths rule is a common first check. In the UK and the European Union, equality law also forbids a test that puts a protected group at a disadvantage without good reason, and candidates’ answers are personal data under the GDPR. Our results give scores and bands, never an automatic rejection, and a person makes every decision. For the rules in your country, ask your own legal adviser.

Do we need a developer to get started?

No. Recruiters do everything in the company dashboard: build assessments, invite candidates, read results and export them. The API is there when you want to connect your own systems.

Can we try it before inviting real candidates?

Yes. Every account starts in the sandbox, with sample questions, and no email ever reaches a real candidate. Invite yourself and take the test to see exactly what candidates see and what you get back. Live mode opens once our team has checked your company.

Why do you only accept work email addresses?

Company accounts hold candidates’ personal data, so we need to know which organization an account belongs to. A company address ties the account to your organization, lets colleagues join safely, and keeps out fake sign-ups.

Can we use our own questions?

Yes. Write them in the editor or upload a CSV, group them into skills, and add a section of them to any assessment beside our categories. Results show where each section came from, and your questions are never shared with another company.

How do you prevent cheating with AI or outside help?

Questions arrive one at a time from our server against a server clock, each candidate gets a different set, and copying and pasting are blocked. Leaving the page, leaving full screen, switching device or network, screenshot keys and very fast answers are recorded as signals. Signals never change a score: they tell you what to ask about in the interview.

Do candidates need a webcam?

No. Our tests use no webcam and no screen recording. Integrity comes from how the test runs instead: questions arrive one at a time from our server, the clock runs on our server, each candidate gets a different set of questions, and events such as leaving the page are recorded as signals for you to review.

What does a candidate need?

Their personal link, an up-to-date browser and a steady connection. No account and no download. A computer is best for longer tests, and phones and tablets work too. The invitation email lists all of this.

Can a candidate go back to an earlier question?

That is your choice for each assessment. With going back allowed, candidates get Previous and Next, a map of every question, mark for review and a review screen before they finish. Both settings are on by default.

Can a candidate have extra time?

Yes. You can give a candidate 25%, 50% or 100% extra time as an accommodation, before or after inviting them. Each change is recorded in the audit log.

How does a campus drive work without email?

You upload the student list and print admit slips. On the day, students open the drive’s page on the college computers and sign in with their roll number, the code on their slip and the room code shown on the supervisor’s screen. A teacher can run the board with a link and a PIN, and results come back by drive.

Who decides what happens to candidate data?

Your company does. We hold and process candidates’ data for you under a data processing agreement, you set how long results are kept, and you can delete a candidate and everything linked to them at any time.

Where do the questions come from?

From our own question bank, written for these tests. Each question is reviewed, then tried unscored with real candidates before it counts, and questions that prove too easy, too hard or too widely seen are flagged for replacement.

Set up your company account

Sign up with your work email, build an assessment and take it yourself as a candidate, all in the sandbox, before any real candidate sees a question.
