The idea that everyone leans on one dominant hemisphere — logical on the left, creative on the right — traces back to a real, Nobel Prize-winning discovery. It is not what that discovery found.

What you need to know

Somewhere online right now is a quiz promising to reveal whether you are left-brained or right-brained. The premise is specific: everyone has a dominant hemisphere, the left one runs logic, language and analysis, the right one runs creativity, intuition and art, and which side wins shapes your whole thinking style. It is one of the most widely repeated claims in pop psychology, it is loosely attached to a real Nobel Prize, and it is not what the Nobel-winning research found.

Where the idea came from

The traceable origin is Roger Sperry's work in the 1960s and 1970s on patients whose corpus callosum — the thick bundle of nerve fibres connecting the brain's two hemispheres — had been surgically severed as a treatment for severe epilepsy. With the direct link between the hemispheres cut, Sperry and his collaborators could show each hemisphere information in isolation and test what it could do alone. The findings were genuinely striking: in most people, language production concentrated in the left hemisphere, so a "split-brain" patient could name an object shown only to their left, language-dominant hemisphere but not one shown only to their right. The work won Sperry a share of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

What Sperry's research did not claim is the part that got lost in translation. The patients were a small group with surgically severed hemispheres, tested on narrow tasks under laboratory conditions designed to isolate exactly what each side could do alone. Nothing in that design speaks to how an ordinary, fully connected brain divides labour during everyday thinking, and nothing in it supports the idea that some people lean on one side more than others as a general personality trait. That extension came later, from popular science writing and, especially, from the self-help and education publishing that followed.

What over a thousand brain scans found

The claim is testable directly: if people really do rely more heavily on one hemisphere's network as a general trait, that should show up as measurably stronger connectivity on one side of the brain, consistently, across a large sample. A 2013 study published in PLOS ONE did exactly that, analysing resting-state functional connectivity — a measure of which brain regions activate together when a person is not doing any specific task — from brain scans of just over 1,000 people. The researchers looked for evidence that individuals could be sorted into left-dominant and right-dominant groups, the way the pop-psychology version of the claim requires.

They found no such pattern. Connectivity within each hemisphere's own networks was strong, which is expected and unremarkable, but no participant showed the kind of consistent whole-brain lateralization the personality-type version of the theory predicts. Everyone's brain used both hemispheres' networks, and no stable individual difference in overall "sidedness" emerged from the data.

  • Real: language production is left-lateralized in roughly 95 per cent of right-handed people and around seven in ten left-handed people, established by decades of clinical testing.
  • Real: some visual-spatial and attention functions show a mild right-hemisphere bias in most people.
  • Not supported: a global "creative" hemisphere and a global "logical" hemisphere that some people favour as a personality trait.
  • Not supported: any brain-scan method that reliably sorts people into "left-brained" or "right-brained" types.

Even the genuine exceptions are narrower than they sound. "Language is on the left" is itself a simplification: the mechanics of producing grammatical speech cluster left in most people, while some related functions, such as reading emotional tone in a voice, lean right. Lateralization, where it is real, applies to specific sub-functions, not to language as a single block and certainly not to a whole personality.

The brain has lateralized functions. It does not have a lateralized personality.

What this means for an IQ test

The distinction matters here because of what it rules out. A properly built cognitive ability test does not produce a "left-brain score" and a "right-brain score." The Wechsler scales, the most widely used adult and child batteries, report index scores for domains like verbal comprehension and visual-spatial reasoning — see our note on what those index scores actually measure — and each domain draws on distributed networks that cross both hemispheres, not a single side acting alone. Even the two index scores that sound the most hemisphere-coded, verbal comprehension and perceptual reasoning, correlate with each other across the general population: someone who scores well on one tends to score reasonably well on the other, which is not what a true two-type, one-side-or-the-other model would predict. A test that claimed to isolate "your right brain's IQ" would be measuring something that does not correspond to how the underlying task is performed, or to how real scores actually pattern.

Handedness is not a clean stand-in for hemisphere dominance either, which is worth saying plainly because the two get folded together constantly. Roughly 95 per cent of right-handed people show left-hemisphere language dominance on formal testing, but so do around seven in ten left-handed people — meaning most left-handed people are still left-lateralized for language, just at a somewhat lower rate. Why the myth persists in classrooms

The persistence is not just anecdotal. A 2012 survey of teachers published in Frontiers in Psychology, part of a wider look at "neuromyths" in education, found that a strong majority endorsed the idea that people learn better when material is matched to their dominant hemisphere or a preferred learning style, even though neither claim has been supported when tested directly. The researchers found no relationship between how much neuroscience training a teacher had and how many of these myths they believed — general familiarity with the brain did not inoculate anyone against this specific, well-marketed version of the claim.

Where the myth turned into a product

The gap between Sperry's narrow finding and the personality-type version of it was filled by decades of popular books, workshops and school materials built around "teaching to your dominant hemisphere" — treating left-brain and right-brain as if they were two different kinds of student rather than a mischaracterisation of one piece of neuroscience. Some of that material overlaps with the broader learning-styles industry, which has its own separate evidence problem: matching instruction to a claimed dominant style has not been shown to improve learning outcomes in controlled studies, independent of whether the style in question is framed as visual versus verbal or left-brained versus right-brained.

The honest version of the claim is less tidy than the quiz result but more useful: your brain uses both hemispheres for nearly everything, with a handful of specific, well-documented exceptions like language production, and no scan has ever sorted people into two thinking types.
