What is Will Smith’s IQ?
Sites list him anywhere from 114 to 157, and the one “142” on record is a line from his own first rap — a boast, not a test score.

No published IQ test result exists for Will Smith, so the honest answer to “what is Will Smith’s IQ?” is that it is unknown. What is documented is an Overbrook High School diploma (1986), four Grammy Awards, the first for the inaugural Best Rap Performance award in 1989, and the 2022 Academy Award for Best Actor; the 157 beside his name cites no test, and no page we opened states 189.

Will Smith’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate115–130Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • Graduated from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia in 1986 (MIT’s Black History Project archive entry “Will Smith, 1986”); by his own account he had “pretty high SAT scores,” but no score has ever been published.
  • Says he was admitted to a pre-engineering summer program at MIT for high school students and did not attend; the same page relays IMDb’s note that it is untrue he turned down an MIT scholarship, because he never applied to college.
  • Began rapping at age 12; DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince released Rock the House (Jive Records, March 1987) and won the first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance, in 1989, for “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”
  • Four Grammy Awards in all, including Best Rap Solo Performance for “Men in Black” (1998) and “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It” (1999).
  • Lead role in NBC’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990–1996); Academy Award nominations for Ali (2002 ceremony) and The Pursuit of Happyness (2007 ceremony); Best Actor winner for King Richard at the 94th Academy Awards (March 27, 2022).

No IQ test score has been published for Smith, and the academic anchors are thin and self-reported: “pretty high SAT scores” with no number, and a summer program he says he was admitted to but did not attend, for which no MIT record turned up. The rest is a long creative record in music, television and film, which rewards writing, timing and performance as much as test-style reasoning, so this estimated IQ range is deliberately loose.

Background

Who Will Smith is

Willard Carroll Smith II was born on September 25, 1968, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in West Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes, a Catholic elementary school, and then Overbrook High School, from which he graduated in 1986. He began rapping at age 12 and met DJ Jazzy Jeff in 1985, when the DJ was performing at a house party near his home. Their first single came out in 1986, before Smith finished high school, and their debut album Rock the House followed on Jive Records in March 1987.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance, at the 31st Annual Grammy Awards in 1989, for “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” As a solo artist Smith later won Best Rap Solo Performance for “Men in Black” (1998, the 40th ceremony) and “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It” (1999, the 41st), part of four Grammy Awards in all. Writing and performing records is documented craft, but it is a different skill set from the abstract reasoning an IQ test samples.

NBC’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ran from 1990 to 1996 and moved him into acting. Major film roles followed in Independence Day (1996), Men in Black (1997), Ali (2001), The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), I Am Legend (2007) and King Richard (2021). As awards facts only: the Academy’s ceremony pages list him as a nominee for Best Actor for Ali (74th Academy Awards, March 24, 2002) and The Pursuit of Happyness (79th, February 25, 2007), and as the winner for King Richard at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, 2022. His 2021 memoir, Will, was written with Mark Manson.

As of October 2026 he is still working in both music and film. His fifth studio album, Based on a True Story, was released on Slang Recordings on March 28, 2025, and includes a track titled “Work of Art.” Public filmography listings show Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024) among his recent film releases, with the thriller Supermax in production and a sequel to I Am Legend reported to be in development.

Where it came from

Where the 157 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Will Smith smiling at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2016

Will Smith’s IQ score, as it appears online, is a spread of unsourced numbers rather than a measurement. The highest is 157: iqcertificate.org lists “Will Smith 157 IQ” in a celebrity table introduced as “based on rumors and hearsay,” and a Spanish-language FAQ page, clubmitsubishiasx.com, repeats 157 and credits it to msn.com without naming an article, a test or a date. Lower down, celebrityiqs.com and check-iq.org say 114, while realiqtestonline.com and celebsiq.com say 115, the first with “reportedly” and the second with “some sources.” None cites an examiner or a score report. That is the usual pattern of where celebrity IQ numbers come from: one site posts a figure, the rest copy or contradict it.

Searches for “Will Smith IQ 189” and “Will Smith IQ test” turn up no page that states 189. None of the pages we opened that list his IQ states 189, and the figure appears to be an autocomplete suggestion rather than a claim anyone published. The only other number tied to his name is 142, and it is a lyric. In a July 14, 2025 interview with the Hungarian outlet Telex, the interviewer quoted a line from Smith’s 2021 memoir Will, which the interviewer described as his first rap, that reads in part “I got an IQ of 142.” Smith answered that saying it in a rap “clarified that my IQ wasn’t that high.” A boast in a verse is not an IQ test result, and Smith’s own reply treats it that way.

The story that gives him an elite-university gloss is that he turned down a scholarship to MIT. MIT’s own Black History Project archive entry, “Will Smith, 1986,” confirms he graduated from Overbrook High School that year, and it quotes IMDb’s correction that it is untrue he turned down a scholarship. The same page relays Smith’s account: he was admitted to a pre-engineering summer program at MIT for high school students and did not attend, he says “I had pretty high SAT scores,” and “I had no intention of going to college.” No original interview behind those words, MIT record of the program or published SAT result turned up, and the text on the MIT page is attributed to IMDb, a user-edited site, so it is best read as his recollection. An SAT number would be a real anchor (see how SAT scores convert to IQ estimates), but without a number there is nothing to convert, and a summer program is a different bar from MIT undergraduate admission.

Is Will Smith a genius? The documented record shows an accomplished entertainer, not a tested outlier. A 157 would sit 3.8 standard deviations above the mean of 100 on the usual 15-point scale, the territory of an IQ near 160, and nothing public supports that. The estimated range of 115–130 here matches Ashton Kutcher and sits just under the 120–135 given to Matt Damon, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Damon’s edge is a documented Harvard enrollment; Smith’s record has no equivalent, only his own account of a summer program, which is why his range starts lower.

The figures that circulate for Will Smith, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited157

157 is the figure listed beside Will Smith’s name on iqcertificate.org and, in Spanish, on clubmitsubishiasx.com (crediting msn.com); celebrityiqs.com and check-iq.org say 114, and realiqtestonline.com and celebsiq.com say 115. “Will Smith IQ 189” is a search suggestion that no page we opened states, and “142” is a line from his first rap.

What we foundNo test result, and no page we opened states 189

We found no published IQ test result for Will Smith. iqcertificate.org lists 157 in a table it calls “based on rumors and hearsay.” clubmitsubishiasx.com repeats 157 and credits msn.com, naming no article, test or date. celebrityiqs.com posts 114 with no source, under a notice that its scores are “not guaranteed” and “for entertainment purposes only.” check-iq.org also says 114, crediting three sources (The Scientific Place 114, IQ-test.net 115, SocioSite 115) that it labels “Low” confidence; realiqtestonline.com says he is “reportedly” at 115 and celebsiq.com says 115, citing “some sources.” Riot IQ’s August 18, 2026 article reaches the same conclusion: none of the three sites it checked cites a test, a date or a score report. No page we opened states 189.

The listed figures disagree by 43 points (114 to 157), which is itself the tell: a measured score does not have rival versions. Here the error runs both ways, since 114 and 115 sit at the bottom edge of the estimated range while 157 sits 27 points above its top.

Questions

Will Smith — frequently asked

What is Will Smith’s IQ?

No published IQ test result exists for Will Smith, so his IQ is unknown. Sites list him anywhere from 114 to 157, and none cites a test. This site’s estimated IQ range of 115–130 is inferred from his documented record, including Overbrook High School (1986), four Grammy Awards and an Academy Award, not from a score.

Is Will Smith’s IQ 189?

There is no source for 189. It appears as a search suggestion, but none of the pages we opened that list his IQ states it. The numbers that do appear are 157 on iqcertificate.org, 115 and 114 on other celebrity-IQ sites, and 142 in a line from his first rap.

Did Will Smith take an IQ test?

No record of one exists. We found no school, clinical or media report of an administered test, and Smith has not published a score. He has said only that he had “pretty high SAT scores” in high school, with no number, and the SAT is an admissions exam rather than an IQ test.

Is Will Smith a genius?

There is no documented evidence of a tested genius-level score, and he has published none. The record shows an accomplished entertainer: the first Best Rap Performance Grammy in 1989, four Grammys in all and the 2022 Academy Award for Best Actor. Those achievements are real, but none of them is an IQ score.

Did Will Smith turn down a scholarship to MIT?

The scholarship version is not supported. MIT’s Black History archive quotes IMDb saying it is untrue that he turned down a scholarship. Smith says he was admitted to a pre-engineering summer program for high school students, did not attend, and had no intention of going to college.

Where does the “142” in Will Smith’s IQ come from?

It is a rap lyric, not a test result. In a July 2025 Telex interview, the interviewer quoted a line from Smith’s memoir Will, described as his first rap, that includes “I got an IQ of 142.” Smith replied that it “clarified that my IQ wasn’t that high.”

How does Will Smith’s estimated IQ compare with Matt Damon’s?

On this site Smith’s estimated range of 115–130 sits just below Matt Damon’s 120–135. The difference is the record: Damon has a documented Harvard enrollment from 1988, while Smith’s academic anchors are a 1986 high school diploma and his own account of a summer program. Neither has a published IQ test.

How does my IQ compare with Will Smith?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other actors profiles, starting with Natalie Portman.
