What was Kobe Bryant’s IQ?
A celebrated basketball IQ, a reported 1,080 SAT and a 144 that cites nothing: three different things.

No IQ test result for Kobe Bryant has ever been published, and the Kobe Bryant IQ score of 144 that circulates online cites no test. What is documented is a reported 1,080 on the SAT (Sports Illustrated, May 1996), which supports an estimated IQ level of about 105–120, not 144. “Basketball IQ” is a coaching phrase, not a score.

Kobe Bryant’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate105–120Test-anchored estimate (SAT-derived)
What the estimate rests on
  • Sports Illustrated reported on May 6, 1996 that Bryant, then a senior at Lower Merion High School outside Philadelphia, was “a B student who scored 1,080 on his SATs.” The magazine repeated the 1,080 in 2010. No score report, test date or section breakdown has been published.
  • The 1995–96 national average for college-bound seniors was 505 verbal and 508 math (1,013 combined), according to the National Center for Education Statistics, so 1,080 sat modestly above the mean of the students who chose to take the SAT.
  • Frey and Detterman (Psychological Science, 2004) found SAT scores correlate .82 with a general-ability factor from the military aptitude battery (.483 with Raven’s matrices in a small college sample) and published equations for converting SAT scores to estimated IQs; Riot IQ’s conversion of 1,080 lands near 113.
  • Sports Illustrated also described him in 1996 as fluent in Italian, learned during about six years living in Italy, and in 2018 he shared the Academy Award for Short Film (Animated) for Dear Basketball: documented abilities outside the sport, consistent with the range but not a test of it.

The entire test evidence is one SAT total reported in a magazine, with no date or section scores, and the SAT is an admissions exam rather than an IQ test; even at a correlation of .82, an estimate from one SAT leaves about nine IQ points of uncertainty either way. This Kobe Bryant IQ level is an inference from that single number, not a measurement, and basketball achievement was deliberately not used to push it higher.

Background

Who Kobe Bryant was

Kobe Bean Bryant was born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia. At six he moved with his family to Rieti, Italy, where the family lived for about six years; Bryant learned fluent Italian. He later attended Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, where as a senior he averaged about 31 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, four blocks and four steals and led the Aces to the Class AAAA state title, according to Sports Illustrated. Wikipedia adds that Lower Merion finished 31–3 and that he left as Southeastern Pennsylvania’s all-time leading scorer with 2,883 points.

Bryant skipped college and was selected 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the June 26, 1996 NBA draft, then traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, the only NBA team he played for. He won five NBA championships (2000, 2001 and 2002 alongside Shaquille O’Neal, then 2009 and 2010), the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player award and two NBA Finals MVP awards. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame lists 18 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA First Team honors and 33,643 career points, including 81 against the Toronto Raptors on January 22, 2006. He also won Olympic gold with the United States in 2008 and 2012, and the Lakers retired both of his jersey numbers, 8 and 24, on December 18, 2017.

Away from the court, Bryant wrote and narrated Dear Basketball, an animated short directed and animated by Glen Keane and based on a piece he published in The Players’ Tribune on November 29, 2015. At the 90th Academy Awards on March 4, 2018, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences listed the film as the winner of Short Film (Animated), credited to Glen Keane and Kobe Bryant. His book The Mamba Mentality: How I Play followed in October 2018. Work ethic and preparation are the traits most often cited about him, which is a separate question from talent versus practice in any measured sense.

Bryant died on January 26, 2020, in Calabasas, California. He was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of its Class of 2020; the enshrinement ceremony was delayed by the pandemic and held on May 15, 2021, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Where it came from

Where the 144 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Kobe Bryant in a gold Los Angeles Lakers jersey looking upward before a free throw in an October 2005 pre-season game

Kobe Bryant’s IQ of 144 traces to listicle pages, not to a test. The figure heads the Kobe Bryant page on sociosite.net, which files it under a high-intelligence band and calls his 1,080 SAT a further indicator; the page names no test, examiner, date or source, and the only test it mentions is a promotion for its own. Riot IQ, in a piece dated August 23, 2026, traces 144 to that page, reports calendar-australia.com repeating it, and lists 127, 114 and 113 as other numbers in circulation. None of the pages we opened cites an interview or a school record; where celebrity IQ numbers come from describes the pattern.

What was Kobe Bryant’s IQ, if anything was measured? The one documented number is the SAT. On May 6, 1996, Sports Illustrated’s Michael Bamberger described Bryant, as he announced he would skip college for the NBA draft, as “a B student who scored 1,080 on his SATs” and spoke fluent Italian, and called Lower Merion a school of high academic achievement. Riot IQ and Wikipedia trace the 1,080 to a 2010 Sports Illustrated retrospective by Ian Thomsen; the 1996 article is earlier. Still, no score report, test date or section breakdown has surfaced, so 1,080 is a reported figure, not a verified one. The scale matters: the College Board had recentered the SAT in 1995, and the 1995–96 college-bound average was 505 verbal plus 508 math, or 1,013. For how totals translate, see converting an SAT score to IQ.

What 1,080 can say is limited. Frey and Detterman (Psychological Science, 2004) found the SAT correlated .82 with a general-ability factor drawn from the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, and published equations for converting SAT scores to estimated IQs; Riot IQ applies a conversion and gets about 113. But an achievement test also reflects schooling and preparation, and a single reported sitting is a thin base, so the range is 105–120 rather than a point value. It lands level with LeBron James’s 105–120 on this site, and the sourced evidence points well below 144.

The phrase that dominates searches, Kobe Bryant’s basketball IQ, is a third thing. Basketball IQ is a coaching and broadcasting term for reading the game: anticipating a defense, choosing a pass, recognizing a mismatch. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s profile credits his mental approach with lifting his game, and in 1996 his Lower Merion coach, Gregg Downer, compared his style of play with Michael Jordan’s and Grant Hill’s. None of that is a score on an intelligence test, and it neither predicts nor rules out any particular result; Jordan has the same gap between a deep reputation for court sense and no published IQ test.

The evidence

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for Kobe Bryant, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited144

That Kobe Bryant’s IQ is 144. The figure heads the Kobe Bryant page on sociosite.net, which places it in its high-intelligence band and offers his 1,080 SAT as a further indicator. Riot IQ (August 23, 2026) lists 144 alongside 127, 114 and 113 as numbers in circulation.

What we foundNo test result, only a reported SAT

No published IQ test result exists for Kobe Bryant. The sociosite.net page names no test, examiner, date or source for 144; the only test it mentions is its own site promotion. Riot IQ traces 144 to that page, reports calendar-australia.com repeating it, and says no interview, biography, school record or statement supporting 144 has surfaced. The one documented number is the SAT total in Sports Illustrated.

The figures that circulate span 31 points (113 to 144) for one man, which is the signature of numbers that are made rather than measured. The documented record supports the lower end: the sourced estimate tops out 24 points below 144, and the usual direction of error on this site holds.

Questions

Kobe Bryant — frequently asked

What is Kobe Bryant’s IQ?

No IQ test result for Kobe Bryant has been published, so his IQ was never measured in public. The documented figure is a reported 1,080 SAT (Sports Illustrated, 1996), which supports an estimated IQ of about 105–120. The 144 that circulates online cites no test.

What was Kobe Bryant’s IQ score — is 144 real?

The 144 appears on a celebrity-IQ page that names no test, date or source, so it is not a score. Riot IQ’s conversion of his reported 1,080 SAT lands near 113, well below 144, and other figures in circulation (127, 114) disagree by up to 31 points.

Did Kobe Bryant take an IQ test?

No IQ test result has been published for him. The only test score tied to his name is a reported SAT total of 1,080, described by Sports Illustrated in May 1996 when he announced he would skip college. The SAT is an admissions exam, though it correlates strongly with general ability.

What was Kobe Bryant’s SAT score?

Sports Illustrated reported in May 1996 that Bryant, a B student at Lower Merion High School, scored 1,080 on his SATs. The 1995–96 college-bound average was 505 verbal plus 508 math (1,013). No score report, test date or section scores have been published.

What is Kobe Bryant’s basketball IQ, and is it the same as his IQ level?

No. Basketball IQ is a coaching and fan term for game sense: anticipating plays, reading defenses and choosing the right pass or shot. It describes decisions on the court, not a score on an intelligence test, so a reputation for it is not evidence of any particular IQ level.

Was Kobe Bryant smart, or a genius?

The record shows a capable student and learner: a B student at a school of high academic achievement, fluent in Italian, and an Academy Award winner in 2018. That fits an estimated IQ of about 105–120, above average but not the genius band the listicles imply, and an inference rather than a measured score.

How does Kobe Bryant’s estimated IQ compare with Michael Jordan’s or LeBron James’s?

Kobe Bryant’s estimated range of 105–120 sits level with LeBron James’s 105–120 on this site and below Michael Jordan’s 115–135, which rests partly on a completed degree. All three are inferences from documented records, not measured scores.

How does my IQ compare with Kobe Bryant?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other athletes profiles, starting with Magnus Carlsen.
