What is Monkey D. Luffy’s IQ?
Luffy forgets opponents he has already fought, yet found Crocodile’s weakness inside a one-minute window.

No source cites a chapter or episode of One Piece that states Monkey D. Luffy’s IQ: the “around 85” in Wikipedia’s character article has no source, and CBR’s 90–130 is an informal estimate. This site’s estimated IQ level for Luffy, inferred from what he does in the story, is 95–120: weak memory and world knowledge, but real reasoning in fights and as a captain.
Monkey D. Luffy’s estimated IQ
- Recall and world knowledge are his documented weak side: Japanese Wikipedia says his memory is poor, so he sometimes forgets opponents he has already fought, and that he is naive about the world; Sportskeeda ranks him last of ten Straw Hats (Joseph Brogan, modified June 24, 2023).
- Alabasta: CBR says he lost the first fight to Crocodile but identified the enemy’s weakness inside a one-minute window (Rei Penber, April 8, 2021), and that he realized water would let him land a hit and later used his own blood (Grant Wiedenheft, April 18, 2021).
- Katakuri (Whole Cake Island): Wikipedia, citing chapter 891 (Volume 89, 2018), has him gain an advanced Observation Haki called Future Sight mid-fight, which CBR says he worked out over a twelve-hour battle.
- Kaido (Wano): Wikipedia cites chapter 1010 (Volume 100, 2021) for an advanced Conqueror’s Haki he unlocks in the fight, and CBR says he mastered the technique Ryou in under two weeks to hurt Kaido.
- Leadership: Wikipedia says he recruits partly by an instinct for reading people, wanted at least ten crew with the abilities his goal needed, and never puts crew or self at risk out of incompetence; CBR counts delaying the crew’s reunion by two years so they could train among his best strategies.
Luffy has no measured IQ, and this range rates a portrayal. Oda shows Luffy’s thinking through speech and action, not inner monologue (Japanese Wikipedia, citing SBS volume 54), so his reasoning has to be inferred from deeds, and the part of the record that tests sample most directly, recall and general knowledge, is the weakest. Fan lists also blur intelligence with strength.

What an IQ of 95–120 actually means
Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.
Average is 100 by construction, and about two-thirds of people fall between 85 and 115. Take the test to place your own score on this scale.
| Score range | Classification | Share of people | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 – 114 | Average | ~68% | The range most people fall into. |
| 115 – 129 | Above average | ~13.6% | Roughly one person in seven. |
| 130 – 144 | Gifted | ~2% | The threshold most high-IQ societies use. |
| Above 144 | Highly gifted | ~0.1% | Figures above this range are extrapolated from the curve rather than measured. |
Percentages are approximate and describe a normal distribution. The same number means different things on tests with different standard deviations.
Thirty questions gives you a measured position on this exact scale — your score, your percentile and the ability breakdown behind it.
Find out in 30 minutes →Who Monkey D. Luffy is
Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of One Piece, written and drawn by Eiichiro Oda and published by Shueisha. Shueisha’s series page gives the serialization start in Weekly Shōnen Jump as issue 34 of 1997, Wikipedia dates it July 22, 1997, and Luffy first appears in chapter 1, “Romance Dawn.” Toei Animation’s anime premiered on Fuji Television on October 20, 1999, with Mayumi Tanaka voicing Luffy in Japanese; Colleen Clinkenbeard voices him in English in the releases after Funimation licensed the series in 2007. Wikipedia says the series had over 600 million copies in circulation worldwide by March 2026. Netflix’s live-action One Piece premiered on August 31, 2023 with Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, season 2, One Piece: Into the Grand Line, premiered on March 10, 2026 (eight episodes), and TheWrap reported on August 9, 2025 that Netflix had renewed the series for a third season.
In the story, as Viz Media’s series page tells it, Luffy dreamed as a child of becoming King of the Pirates; he accidentally gained a rubber body from a Devil Fruit, which stretches and leaves him unable to swim. Per Wikipedia he sails through arcs including Alabasta, Enies Lobby, Marineford, Dressrosa, Whole Cake Island and Wano, and develops Gears 2, 3 and 4 (Gear 4 in chapter 784, Volume 78, 2015) along with Observation, Armament and Conqueror’s Haki. Chapter 1044 (2022) reveals the fruit to be the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, whose awakened form is Gear 5, and chapter 1053 (2022) puts his bounty at 3 billion Berries, up from an initial 30 million. After Dressrosa, seven pirate crews pledge loyalty to him and form the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.
Oda has described Luffy, in a New York Times interview that Otaku USA summarized on August 29, 2023, as an energetic child who looks ordinary on the outside and is far from ordinary within. Wikipedia cites a 1998 Comickers interview for his aim of keeping the character straightforward. Japanese Wikipedia, citing a 2003 issue of manga Omo!, says Oda first saw Luffy’s true nature as a child during the Usopp arc, and, citing SBS volume 54, that Luffy’s inner voice is never shown. The same article calls him extremely perceptive about other people’s feelings, and an unbounded optimist.
Placed against this site’s other fictional profiles, 95–120 puts Luffy at the level of Goku (100–120) and Naruto Uzumaki (100–125), two other shonen heroes whose battle record outruns their schoolbook one, and far below the tacticians: Shikamaru Nara at 150–170, Light Yagami at 170–190 and L Lawliet at 178–195. The record fits an above-average improviser and team leader better than the genius IQ level that fan lists sometimes reach for, and Wikipedia’s 85 would follow only if the recall side were weighed alone. This page rates the fictional character’s written intellect only.

Where the 85–130 figure came from
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Luffy’s IQ is not a number that One Piece or its publishers give. Viz Media’s series page and Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump page describe a boy who dreams of becoming King of the Pirates and print no rating, and the pages on the character report no databook or SBS line that scores his intelligence. The figures that circulate are two informal ones. English Wikipedia’s article on the character says he has a “low conventional IQ (estimated around 85)” but a very high “battle IQ” and EQ, in a paragraph with no reference. CBR’s Marc York (December 5, 2021) ends a piece on whether Luffy is smart or just lucky with a verdict that his IQ “could easily be anywhere between 90 and 130,” an estimate drawn from his decisions and fights. For how numbers like these harden into facts, see where celebrity IQ numbers come from.
Luffy’s IQ level splits into book smarts and battle sense, and the record is lopsided. On the book-smart side, Japanese Wikipedia says his memory is poor enough that he sometimes forgets opponents he has already fought, and that he is naive about the world; it adds that Oda keeps Luffy’s inner voice off the page (citing SBS volume 54), so that he says or does a thing rather than thinking it over. Sportskeeda ranks him last of ten Straw Hats (Joseph Brogan, modified June 24, 2023) and last on its list of Yonko (June 30, 2022). ScreenRant’s Ken Mar (March 26, 2022) writes that being protagonist and captain “doesn’t signify that he is really intelligent.” In Loguetown, per Wikipedia, the Navy captain Smoker says Luffy “enjoys playing stupid.” Recall and general knowledge are what a test samples most directly, which is why this page does not read this side away; see memory and IQ.
The Luffy IQ estimate leans on the reasoning feats, and the pages that list them agree on the same few. CBR says that after losing to Crocodile in Alabasta he identified the enemy’s weakness inside a one-minute window (Rei Penber, April 8, 2021), realized that water would let him land a hit and later used his own blood (Grant Wiedenheft, April 18, 2021). Per Wikipedia, in the Katakuri fight he gains an advanced Observation Haki called Future Sight (chapter 891, Volume 89, 2018), which CBR says he worked out over a twelve-hour battle; against Kaido he unlocks an advanced Conqueror’s Haki (chapter 1010, Volume 100, 2021), and CBR says he mastered the technique Ryou in under two weeks. Wiedenheft also counts a mirror used to reflect Foxy’s slowing beam in the Davy Back Fight and the decision to delay the crew’s reunion by two years so they could train. These are feats of fast learning and adaptation inside one domain, closer to fluid than crystallized intelligence, and they say little about the recall and knowledge side.
Luffy IQ versus Goku IQ turns on what each side means by smart. Sportskeeda’s Rohan Jagannath (March 13, 2024) reports that fans see Luffy as having the least battle IQ among Goku, Naruto and Luffy, while his piece of February 18, 2024 puts Luffy second of Naruto, Ichigo and Luffy, behind Naruto, saying he often lets emotion drive his moves; both state the author’s opinion. ScreenRant’s Hannah Diffey (January 18, 2025) writes that his intelligence has always been emotional, social and practical rather than academic. “Battle IQ” is a fan phrase, not a test. This site rates Luffy level with Goku at 100–120 and Naruto Uzumaki at 100–125, with a lower floor because of the memory record; for the emotional side, see IQ versus EQ.
How we read a number →Label “Monkey D. Luffy,” description “fictional character from One Piece”; instance of fictional human and anime character; creator Q2010 (Eiichiro Oda); narrative universe “One Piece universe”; English Wikipedia article “Monkey D. Luffy.” Confirms the entity is the character, not the manga or a namesake.
Shueisha: author 尾田栄一郎 (Eiichiro Oda); serialization start given as 1997年34号 (issue 34 of 1997); Luffy is a boy who sets out to become King of the Pirates. Viz: “Created by Eiichiro Oda”; Luffy dreamed as a child of becoming King of the Pirates; his rubber body leaves him unable to swim. Neither page gives an intelligence rating or an IQ.
Luffy: the uncited sentence “low conventional IQ (estimated around 85)”; Smoker’s “enjoys playing stupid” remark; crew recruitment and the “capable and reliable captain” line; chapter citations 784, 891, 1010, 1044 and 1053; Comickers interview (October 1998) on keeping him straightforward. One Piece: serialization since July 22, 1997; anime October 20, 1999; over 600 million copies by March 2026. TV series: premiere August 31, 2023; season March 2 10, 2026; season 3 renewed August 2025. Media list: the six databooks are named, their contents not described. No databook or SBS intelligence rating is reported.
Personality: poor memory, sometimes forgetting opponents already fought; naive about the world; an unbounded optimist; extremely perceptive about others’ feelings. Other: Luffy’s psychology is never shown by monologue, an Oda policy citing SBS volume 54; Oda saw Luffy as a child during the Usopp arc (manga Omo!, winter 2003). Birthday May 5 (citing SBS volume 15). No IQ and no databook intelligence rating; the SBS and databook citations cover other details.
York: “could easily be anywhere between 90 and 130,” an informal estimate from his fights and decisions. Penber: Crocodile’s weakness found in a one-minute window; Future Sight over a twelve-hour fight; Ryou mastered in under two weeks. Wiedenheft: water and blood against Crocodile, the mirror against Foxy, the two-year delay. Khan: instinctive battle genius, weak at planning and world awareness. Only York gives a number.
Mar: Robin is “undoubtedly” the smartest main character; being protagonist and captain “doesn’t signify that he is really intelligent”; credits a mirror against Foxy’s beam and clones to confuse Big Mom. Diffey: his intelligence is emotional, social and practical, not academic; the Netflix show did not add intelligence. No IQ number in either.
Brogan: Luffy last of ten Straw Hats, last on a Yonko list. Jagannath: second of three on battle IQ behind Naruto (February); least battle IQ of Goku, Naruto and Luffy per fans (March); the March piece states it reflects the author’s opinion. No numeric IQ in any.
Otaku USA, summarizing a New York Times interview: Oda pictured Luffy as a very energetic child, ordinary outside and far from ordinary within; Iñaki Godoy fits the vision. TheWrap: Godoy plays Luffy; season 3 renewed; Ian Stokes joins Joe Tracz as co-showrunner. Neither mentions intelligence.
None of Wikidata, English and Japanese Wikipedia, Shueisha’s and Viz Media’s series pages, or the CBR, ScreenRant and Sportskeeda pieces above gives a canon IQ; the numbers 85 and 90–130 are informal.
The sources behind our estimate
The figures that circulate for Monkey D. Luffy, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.
No source cites a Luffy IQ from One Piece itself; what circulates are two informal numbers. English Wikipedia’s Monkey D. Luffy article gives him a “low conventional IQ (estimated around 85)” with a very high “battle IQ” and EQ, and cites nothing for it. CBR’s Marc York (December 5, 2021) writes that his IQ “could easily be anywhere between 90 and 130.”
No official source gives Luffy an IQ. Viz Media’s One Piece page and Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump page describe the story and print no intelligence rating; English and Japanese Wikipedia name no databook or SBS line that scores it (the Japanese article cites SBS volumes for details such as his birthday and Oda’s policy of showing no inner monologue). The 85 sits in a Wikipedia paragraph with no reference. CBR calls its range an estimate from his decisions and fights. The Sportskeeda and ScreenRant lists print no number.
On the usual scale (mean 100, standard deviation 15) the 85 sits one standard deviation below the mean, near the 16th percentile, and CBR’s 130 sits two standard deviations above it. Neither is a score: each is a verdict on a portrayal. This site’s 95–120 lies inside CBR’s span and above Wikipedia’s line because it weighs what he demonstrably does, not only the book-smart side.

Monkey D. Luffy — frequently asked
What is Luffy’s IQ?
Luffy has no stated IQ: no official page gives one, and no source cites a chapter or episode that does. This site’s estimated IQ level for Monkey D. Luffy as One Piece shows him is 95–120. The figures online are uncited or informal: Wikipedia’s “around 85” and CBR’s 90–130.
What is Luffy’s IQ level, and where do the 85 and 90–130 estimates come from?
Neither comes from a test. English Wikipedia’s character article says Luffy has a “low conventional IQ (estimated around 85)” and cites nothing for it. CBR’s Marc York (December 5, 2021) wrote that his IQ “could easily be anywhere between 90 and 130,” judged from his decisions and fights. This site’s range is 95–120.
Did Luffy ever take an IQ test, and what would a Luffy IQ test show?
No source shows Luffy taking an IQ test. A real one would probably split his profile: Japanese Wikipedia describes poor memory and naivety about the world, which recall and knowledge items would penalize, while reasoning items could capture how he adapts mid-fight. A single score would hide that gap.
What is Luffy’s battle IQ?
Luffy’s battle IQ is a fan phrase, not a test score, and no source puts a number on it. English Wikipedia calls it very high, and CBR cites Future Sight against Katakuri (chapter 891) and Conqueror’s Haki against Kaido (chapter 1010). Sportskeeda’s Rohan Jagannath (March 13, 2024) calls him a strong fighter but not a strategic one.
Is Luffy smart?
In battle and with people, yes; in recall and book knowledge, the record says no. Sportskeeda ranks him last of ten Straw Hats, and Japanese Wikipedia says his memory is poor, but he reads people, builds a crew around the roles his goal needs and adapts mid-fight. This site rates him 95–120.
Luffy IQ vs Goku IQ: which character does this site rate higher?
Neither: this site rates Luffy 95–120 and Goku 100–120, so the ranges overlap almost entirely, and canon gives neither an IQ. Sportskeeda’s Rohan Jagannath (March 13, 2024) has fans placing Luffy last on battle IQ among Goku, Naruto and Luffy, while ScreenRant’s Hannah Diffey (January 18, 2025) calls his intelligence emotional, social and practical.
What is Luffy’s IQ in the Netflix One Piece series?
The live-action Luffy (Iñaki Godoy, Netflix, from August 31, 2023) has no IQ either. ScreenRant’s Hannah Diffey (January 18, 2025) rejects the idea that the show made him smarter, writing that Godoy brought out charisma and wisdom already in the manga and that his recklessness remains. This site rates the manga and anime character at 95–120.
