What is Art Garfunkel’s IQ?
A real math degree, and no number attached to it at all.

Garfunkel is the cleanest case this site has found: a real, dated, two-degree academic record in mathematics, and — checked hard, across every celebrity-IQ list that covers other musicians — no invented number attached to it at all.

Art Garfunkel’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate135–150Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • BA in Art History, Columbia College, 1965.
  • Two separate master’s degrees — an MA in Mathematics Education and a second MA in Mathematics — both from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 1967.
  • Began doctoral coursework in mathematics education before Simon & Garfunkel’s career made him withdraw, and later taught geometry at Litchfield Preparatory Academy in Connecticut, c. 1971–72.

Two completed master’s degrees are a real, checkable record, but graduate admission and coursework are not a test of general cognitive ability, and the range here should be read with that limit in mind.

Background

Who Art Garfunkel is

Art Garfunkel was born in 1941 in Forest Hills, Queens, and first recorded with Paul Simon as a teenager, as “Tom & Jerry,” before the two reunited as a folk duo in the early 1960s.

He earned a BA in art history from Columbia College in 1965, then two master’s degrees in mathematics from Teachers College, Columbia, in 1967 — the same year Simon & Garfunkel’s career began to take off, which is why the doctorate he had started was never finished.

He has also kept a public, dated log of every book he has read since June 1968 — over 1,195 titles as of 2013 — on his own website. It is not a credential in the academic sense, but it is a genuinely unusual and independently checkable habit.

Where it came from

Where the 135–150 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

2Columbia math degrees, 1967

Most entries in this section exist to demolish an inflated figure. Garfunkel’s is different: there does not appear to be a figure to demolish. That is worth stating plainly rather than manufacturing a “circulating claim” where none was found.

What is real and checkable is the degree record itself: a Columbia art-history degree followed by two separate Columbia master’s degrees in mathematics, one of them in mathematics education, completed in 1967. He went on to teach geometry, briefly, at a Connecticut prep school — a genuine classroom credential, not just a diploma.

The absence of an invented number here is itself informative. It suggests that a real, specific, checkable credential — “two math degrees from Columbia” — is a strong enough shorthand for “smart” on its own that nobody felt the need to attach a fabricated score to it.

The evidence

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for Art Garfunkel, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited135–150

Almost none, and that is the finding. Unlike Eminem, Brian May, Taylor Swift and other musicians already profiled on this site, no dedicated celebrity-IQ page assigns Garfunkel a figure at all — checked directly against ranking pages that do cover two dozen other musicians.

What we foundNo figure circulates, and no test exists

We searched specifically for a Garfunkel entry on the aggregator sites that rank other musicians’ IQs, and found none. His reputation for intelligence online rests entirely on the Columbia degrees themselves, referenced directly rather than converted into an invented score. No IQ test result has ever been published either.

Also published elsewhere

There is no spread to report — the unusual finding here is silence where this site normally finds a number.

Questions

Art Garfunkel — frequently asked

What is Art Garfunkel’s IQ?

No figure appears to circulate for him at all, and no test result has ever been published — an unusual, clean absence for this section.

Does Art Garfunkel really have a math degree?

Yes, two: separate master’s degrees in mathematics and mathematics education, both from Teachers College, Columbia, in 1967, after a 1965 Columbia BA in art history.

Did he finish a PhD?

No. He began doctoral coursework in mathematics education but withdrew as Simon & Garfunkel’s career intensified.

Did he actually teach?

Yes — geometry, at Litchfield Preparatory Academy in Connecticut, around 1971–72, during a break from performing.

Why doesn’t his page have a “claimed vs. found” gap like most others?

Because no claim was found. It is the one entry on this site where the audit turned up nothing to correct.

What is the actual evidence people point to?

The two Columbia degrees, which are real and dated, and a public log of over 1,195 books read since 1968 — both checkable, neither a test score.

How does my IQ compare with Art Garfunkel?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other musicians profiles, starting with Brian May.
