Who J. Robert Oppenheimer was

J. Robert Oppenheimer was born in New York in 1904 and went to Harvard in 1922, taking a chemistry degree summa cum laude in three years. He spent an unhappy year at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge before moving to Göttingen, where he took his doctorate under Max Born in 1927.

He built the American school of theoretical physics across joint appointments at Berkeley and Caltech through the 1930s, and in 1943 was appointed director of the Los Alamos Laboratory. He was thirty-nine, had never run anything larger than a research group, and the appointment was considered a risk.

After the war he directed the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and chaired the General Advisory Committee to the Atomic Energy Commission. His security clearance was revoked after a hearing in 1954; the Department of Energy vacated that decision in 2022, fifty-five years after his death.

Where the 165 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

The Oppenheimer numbers grew the way Tesla’s did, and for the same reason: a reputation for exceptional intelligence with no measurement attached to it invites one to be supplied. The 2023 film pushed search volume for the question up sharply, and the aggregator pages that answer it were written to meet that demand rather than to settle anything.

What makes the invented figure unnecessary here is that the documented record is genuinely remarkable and genuinely specific. A Harvard degree in three years and a Göttingen doctorate at twenty-three are checkable facts. So is the Born–Oppenheimer approximation, which working chemists still use. So is the 1939 black-hole paper, published the same day Germany invaded Poland and largely ignored for thirty years.

There is also a documented weakness, and it is more interesting than a score. Oppenheimer was a poor experimentalist — his time at the Cavendish under Thomson was miserable and unproductive, and the laboratory work did not suit him. He was also, by the accounts of people who worked with him, not the fastest analyst at Los Alamos. What he had was breadth and the ability to run a room. Neither of those is what an IQ test measures.
