John Legend’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate132–145Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • Enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania at sixteen; graduated in 1999, magna cum laude, in English with a concentration in African-American literature.
  • Member of Penn’s Sphinx Senior Society and president and musical director of the a cappella group Counterparts as an undergraduate.
  • EGOT status — Grammy (2006), Oscar (2015), Tony (2017), Emmy (2018) — the fastest way to demonstrate sustained achievement across four unrelated competitive fields.

Magna cum laude is a real, checkable honour; it is not Phi Beta Kappa, which is sometimes wrongly attached to him and does not appear in any record we could find. Award sweeps like EGOT measure output and industry recognition, not a tested cognitive score.

Background

Who John Legend is

John Legend, born John Stephens in 1978 in Springfield, Ohio, enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania at sixteen. He graduated in 1999 with a degree in English, a concentration in African-American literature, and magna cum laude honours, while performing with the a cappella group Counterparts, which he led as president and musical director.

He adopted the stage name “Legend” from a nickname given to him in the studio by collaborator J. Ivy, who thought he sounded like an old-school soul singer. His debut album, Get Lifted (2004), won three Grammys, including Best New Artist.

He went on to win an Academy Award for “Glory” (from Selma, 2015), a Tony as a producer of Jitney (2017), and a Primetime Emmy for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert (2018) — completing an EGOT at thirty-nine and becoming the first Black man to do so.

Where it came from

Where the 135 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Legend’s case is a cleaner version of a pattern that runs across the musicians on this site: real academic achievement — here, an Ivy League degree finished with honours at nineteen — gets a number attached to it by sites with a commercial or listicle incentive to publish one, whether or not any test exists.

He belongs alongside Brian May as one of the few working musicians on this site with a completed, verifiable academic credential behind the reputation, rather than just the reputation itself. May finished a doctorate decades after starting it; Legend finished his degree on schedule, at an unusually young age, with honours confirmed by the university’s own record.

The evidence

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for John Legend, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited135

A figure of 113 circulates from a site that runs its own online IQ quiz and claims Legend “took” it on a specific date; a separate figure of 135 appears on an unrelated celebrity-IQ listicle.

What we foundNeither number has a real test behind it

The 113 figure comes from brght.org, a commercial site that sells its own IQ-quiz product and asserts, with no supporting evidence, that Legend personally took and scored on it. The 135 figure comes from theshot.com, an uncited listicle that in the same breath repeats an unconfirmed claim about Harvard and Georgetown scholarship offers. Neither site cites a real test, and the two numbers contradict each other by twenty-two points — itself a sign that neither is a measurement.

Questions

John Legend — frequently asked

What is John Legend’s IQ?

No credible figure exists. Two numbers circulate online — 113 and 135 — from a commercial quiz site and an uncited listicle respectively, and they contradict each other by twenty-two points.

Did John Legend really score 113 on an IQ test?

No test result supports that figure. It originates on a site that sells its own online IQ quiz and offers no evidence he ever took or authorized it.

Is John Legend a Phi Beta Kappa member?

No record of this could be found anywhere, including Penn’s own record of his other undergraduate honours. Magna cum laude is the documented distinction.

How old was John Legend when he graduated college?

Nineteen. He enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania at sixteen and graduated in 1999, magna cum laude, in English.

What is John Legend’s EGOT record?

A Grammy in 2006, an Oscar in 2015 for “Glory,” a Tony in 2017 as a producer of Jitney, and an Emmy in 2018 — completing EGOT status at thirty-nine, reportedly the first Black man to do so.

How does Legend’s case compare to other musicians on this site?

Like Brian May, he has a genuine, finished academic credential behind the reputation. Neither man’s degree comes with a documented IQ score, and the numbers attached to both online have no real source.

How does my IQ compare with John Legend?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other musicians profiles, starting with Brian May.
