Michael Joseph Jackson was born August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, and began performing as a child in his family’s group, which became the Jackson 5. The group signed to Motown Records in 1969. Touring took over his adolescence: formal schooling in Gary ended by around age eleven, and a private tutor, Rose Fine, taught the Jackson brothers roughly three hours a day on the road. He briefly attended Montclair College Preparatory School in Van Nuys, California, and received a high school diploma through the school.
As a solo artist, Jackson released Off the Wall in 1979 with producer Quincy Jones, followed by Thriller in 1982 — later certified by Guinness World Records as the best-selling album in history, with sales estimated in excess of 67 million copies worldwide. At the 1984 Grammy Awards, Jackson won a record eight awards in a single night, a total Carlos Santana would tie in 2000 but no one has since exceeded. He went on to release Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), HIStory (1995) and Invincible (2001), and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: with the Jackson 5 in 1997, and as a solo artist in 2001, becoming its youngest solo inductee.
Beyond performing, Jackson wrote or co-wrote several of his biggest hits and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. In 1985 he acquired the ATV Music Publishing catalog — including roughly 251 Lennon–McCartney compositions — for a reported $47.5 million; it was merged into Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 1995, and his estate sold its 50 percent stake to Sony in 2016 for a reported $750 million. He also co-holds a US utility patent for a stage-shoe mechanism. He died on June 25, 2009, in Los Angeles, of acute propofol intoxication, at age 50.

Where the 164 figure came from
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.
No IQ test result for Michael Jackson has ever been published — not by a school, a court, an employer, or Jackson himself. The specific numbers that circulate instead trace back to a small cluster of celebrity-IQ quiz and FAQ pages, none of which cite a test, a psychologist, or a study behind their figures.
The most-repeated figure, 164, appears to originate on sociosite.net, which states it as a bare assertion with no source. The same figure then turns up on template-styled FAQ pages, including calendar-australia.com and, in the same site family, spainexchange.com — one of which supplies its own justification after the fact: that Jackson “read so voraciously” he must have had an IQ of 164. His reading habit is real and well documented (see below); a specific three-digit score is not something that habit can demonstrate.
check-iq.org, another aggregator, arrives at a different figure — 159 — simply by averaging the 164 claim above with a separate, uncited 155 estimate pulled from Quora answers. The site labels both of its own inputs “Low Confidence,” then publishes 159 under the headline “Michael Jackson’s IQ Shows He Was a Genius.” Averaging two unsourced guesses does not produce a more reliable third one — it launders the same absence of evidence into a number that only looks more precise.
A more elaborate estimate, from the blog Pumpkin Person, scores a childhood drawing Jackson made of Charlie Chaplin using the Goodenough-Harris draw-a-person test, runs Flesch-Kincaid grade-level analysis on quotes attributed to him, and composites the results into a claimed 133. The individual instruments are real, but none were designed to be applied secondhand, decades later, to anecdotes about a public figure — and the page itself states plainly that no actual test score has ever been revealed.
No list connecting Marilyn vos Savant to Jackson’s IQ could be found anywhere in this research. Her name does appear on some of the same FAQ-farm pages, in an adjacent, separate question about who holds the highest IQ on record — which may be how the two names ended up associated in pop culture, despite vos Savant never having published any ranking that includes him.
