Ben Affleck’s IQ has never been published: no test result exists, and the 154 that circulates traces to a celebrity-IQ page that cites none. What is documented is a screenplay Oscar shared with Matt Damon, three directing awards for Argo, and a college record of one semester at Vermont and about a year and a half at Occidental, with no degree.

Ben Affleck’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate120–135Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • Attended the University of Vermont for one semester and then Occidental College in Los Angeles for about a year and a half; no degree is on record, and Occidental’s communications director told a local news outlet that its records list his major as undeclared, not the Middle Eastern affairs often reported.
  • Shared the Academy Award (70th Academy Awards, March 23, 1998) and the Golden Globe for the Good Will Hunting screenplay with Matt Damon, a script the two developed through studio rewrites before Miramax acquired it in 1995.
  • Directed Gone Baby Gone (2007), The Town (2010), Argo (2012), Live by Night (2016) and Air (2023), co-writing the first two with Aaron Stockard (and Peter Craig on The Town) and writing Live by Night alone; the National Board of Review named him Best Directorial Debut for Gone Baby Gone.
  • For Argo, won the Directors Guild of America feature-film award for 2012, the BAFTA for Best Direction (February 10, 2013) and the Golden Globe for Best Director, and shared the Best Picture Oscar as a producer; he was not among the five Best Director nominees.

No IQ test, degree or transcript exists to anchor this, so the range rests on a record of co-writing and directing that peers and juries rated, and craft awards do not measure a psychometric construct. Argo’s Oscar-winning screenplay was Chris Terrio’s and the Good Will Hunting script was shared with Damon, which is why the range sits level with Damon’s 120–135 and below the 130–145 of the category’s other writer-directors.

Background

Who Ben Affleck is

Ben Affleck was born on August 15, 1972, in Berkeley, California, and grew up in Massachusetts, where his family moved when he was three; he lived in Falmouth and Cambridge. He attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, the same Cambridge high school as Matt Damon. He then enrolled at the University of Vermont in Burlington, where he stayed one semester, and at Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he spent about a year and a half and left without a degree. His major is often reported as Middle Eastern affairs, but an Occidental spokesperson told a local news outlet that the college’s records list it as undeclared. In May 2013 Brown University conferred an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts on him, a recognition of his body of work rather than an earned degree.

Damon began the Good Will Hunting script as a playwriting assignment at Harvard, and the two friends developed it together in Los Angeles. Castle Rock Entertainment bought it in November 1994; after requests for rewrites it went into turnaround, and Miramax acquired it in 1995. Gus Van Sant directed, and the film opened in US theaters on December 5, 1997, with Affleck as Chuckie Sullivan and Damon as Will Hunting. It earned nine Academy Award nominations and won two at the 70th Academy Awards on March 23, 1998: Robin Williams for Best Supporting Actor, and Affleck and Damon for the screenplay (the category was then called Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, today Best Original Screenplay). The pair also won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture.

Affleck made his directing debut with Gone Baby Gone (released October 19, 2007), which he co-wrote with Aaron Stockard from Dennis Lehane’s 1998 novel and which earned him the National Board of Review’s Best Directorial Debut award. The Town (September 17, 2010), written by Peter Craig, Affleck and Stockard from Chuck Hogan’s 2004 novel Prince of Thieves, brought Jeremy Renner a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 83rd Academy Awards. Argo (October 12, 2012), which Affleck directed, produced and starred in as Tony Mendez from Chris Terrio’s screenplay, dramatizes the “Canadian Caper,” the rescue of six US diplomats from Tehran during the 1979–81 Iran hostage crisis. It received seven Oscar nominations and won three: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay (Terrio) and Best Film Editing (William Goldenberg). Affleck was not among the five Best Director nominees, yet he won the Golden Globe for Best Director, the Directors Guild of America feature-film award for 2012 and the BAFTA for Best Direction at the 66th ceremony on February 10, 2013, and he shared the Best Picture Oscar with fellow producers Grant Heslov and George Clooney at the 85th Academy Awards on February 24, 2013. Live by Night, which he wrote and directed from another Lehane novel, opened in the US on December 25, 2016.

In November 2022 Affleck and Matt Damon launched Artists Equity, an independent production company, and Air (US release April 5, 2023), which Affleck directed from Alex Convery’s screenplay about Nike’s pursuit of Michael Jordan, was its first release. As an actor he played Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), with cameos in Suicide Squad (2016) and The Flash (2023), and he starred in The Accountant 2 (2025) and, alongside Damon, The Rip (January 2026). As of October 2026, Animals, a Netflix film he directed and stars in, is scheduled for release on October 9, 2026.

Where it came from

Where the 154 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Ben Affleck in a dark suit and tie at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2026

The Ben Affleck IQ 154 figure traces to celebrity-IQ pages, not to a test, and the deepest page that could be opened is no better than the lists above it (see where celebrity IQ numbers come from). Bright Side’s “8 Hollywood Celebrities With Surprisingly High IQs” puts him at number eight with 154, calls that genius or near-genius territory, and links the number to iq-test.net, which redirects to iqtesta.com. There the whole claim is a single sentence, “Ben Affleck owns an IQ of 154,” with no test, source, date or method, and the Bright Side article explains nothing about how any of its numbers were obtained.

The rest of the field repeats the number. check-iq.org credits Bright Side and Tuko at medium confidence and National Today at low confidence, with no test behind either label. National Today’s birthday page asks what Ben Affleck’s I.Q. is and answers in one sentence, 154, citing nothing. celebsiq.com places 154 in the range of super-intelligent humans without a source, and sociosite.net makes the Ben Affleck high IQ case by repeating the figure and listing Alicia Keys at the same 154, never saying where either number came from. Its headline also calls him a genius “in the guise of Batman”; he did play that fictional character, whose own figure is a separate question handled on Batman’s profile, but the article text we read does not discuss the role.

Ben Affleck’s IQ and Matt Damon’s are put side by side because they share a screenplay Oscar, but Good Will Hunting gave them different parts: Damon played Will Hunting, the self-taught mathematics genius, and Affleck played Chuckie Sullivan, a construction worker and Will’s friend. The genius belongs to the character, and role-based reasoning of the same kind is traced on Matt Damon’s profile, where a listicle cites the part as evidence. IQ Metrics’ estimated IQ for Affleck, 120–135, is level with Damon’s 120–135: both co-wrote the film, neither finished a college degree (Damon left Harvard a semester short of his English B.A.), and the 154 and 160 that circulate for them both lack a test. The two writer-directors with higher ranges here, Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan, both sit at 130–145.

A 154 would be about 3.6 standard deviations above the average of 100 on a 15-point scale, which on a normal curve is roughly one person in 6,000, in the range where the ceiling effect makes any single score least reliable (see what an IQ of 150 means). An estimated IQ for Ben Affleck has to come from the documented record instead, and a shared screenplay Oscar, directing awards and no completed degree support a lower range than 154, not a higher one. Film awards reward craft and collaboration and are not IQ tests; the error in the circulating number runs, as it usually does, upward.

Most widely cited154

Search “Ben Affleck IQ” and the figure that comes back is 154. It appears on check-iq.org, celebsiq.com, sociosite.net, National Today’s Ben Affleck birthday page and Bright Side’s list “8 Hollywood Celebrities With Surprisingly High IQs,” and on iq-test.net, the page Bright Side links for it.

What we foundNo test result behind the 154

No Ben Affleck IQ test result has been published, and none of the pages carrying 154 names a test, an examiner or a date. check-iq.org lists 154 under three outlets, Bright Side and Tuko at medium confidence and National Today at low confidence, and says only that it derived the estimate from them. Bright Side’s entry links the number to iq-test.net, which now redirects to iqtesta.com, an IQ-testing site; that page says “Ben Affleck owns an IQ of 154” with no source, method or date. celebsiq.com states 154 with no source, sociosite.net repeats it beside the same figure for Alicia Keys with no disclaimer, and National Today gives it as a flat fact. What can be checked is the record: an Oscar and a Golden Globe for a shared screenplay, and three directing awards for Argo.

Questions

Ben Affleck — frequently asked

What is Ben Affleck’s IQ?

No IQ test result for Ben Affleck has ever been published, so there is no measured score. The 154 that circulates on celebrity-IQ sites cites no test, examiner or date. IQ Metrics’ estimated range for him is 120–135, inferred from a shared screenplay Oscar, directing awards for Argo and a college record with no degree.

Is Ben Affleck’s IQ really 154?

There is no evidence that it is. The 154 appears on check-iq.org, celebsiq.com, sociosite.net, National Today and Bright Side, but none names a test, an examiner or a date, and Bright Side’s link leads to a page that simply asserts the number. On a 15-point scale 154 would be about 3.6 standard deviations above average, higher than his documented record supports.

Did Ben Affleck take an IQ test?

There is no public record that he did. No Ben Affleck IQ test result has been released by him, a school or a psychologist, and none of the pages repeating 154 names one. What is documented is academic and creative: a semester at the University of Vermont, about a year and a half at Occidental College, and a shared screenplay Oscar.

Does Ben Affleck have a high IQ, or is he a genius?

“Genius” is not a term this site measures. The record is that of an accomplished writer-director: a screenplay Oscar shared with Matt Damon and the Directors Guild, BAFTA and Golden Globe directing awards for Argo. That supports an estimated IQ of 120–135, high but inferred, not scored. A Ben Affleck Batman IQ search concerns a fictional character, which is a separate question.

How does Ben Affleck’s IQ compare with Matt Damon’s?

IQ Metrics places Ben Affleck’s estimated IQ at 120–135, level with Matt Damon’s 120–135. They share the Good Will Hunting screenplay Oscar and neither finished college: Damon left Harvard a semester short of his degree, Affleck left Occidental after about a year and a half. Neither has a published test, so this is not a ranking of who is smarter.

Did Ben Affleck go to Harvard or finish college?

There is no record that Ben Affleck attended Harvard; Matt Damon did, and wrote the first draft of Good Will Hunting there. Affleck’s documented college record is one semester at the University of Vermont and about a year and a half at Occidental College. He holds no earned degree, though Brown University gave him an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts in 2013.

What awards has Ben Affleck won for writing and directing?

Affleck and Matt Damon won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for the Good Will Hunting screenplay in 1998. For Argo he won the Directors Guild of America award, the BAFTA for Best Direction and the Golden Globe for Best Director, and shared the Best Picture Oscar as a producer, though he was not nominated for the Best Director Oscar.

How does my IQ compare with Ben Affleck?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other actors profiles, starting with Natalie Portman.
