What was Dolly Parton’s IQ?
A 1966 hit called “Dumb Blonde,” a publishing deal she refused to sign away, and IQ figures that cite no test at all.

No IQ test result for Dolly Parton has ever been published. The 140 and 145 attached to her online come from unnamed “sources”; what is documented is a 1964 high school diploma, reportedly more than 3,000 songs written, and a business record that includes her own publishing company, a theme park and a book program.
Dolly Parton’s estimated IQ
- Graduated from Sevier County High School in Sevierville, Tennessee, in 1964 and moved to Nashville the next day; her two doctorates (Carson-Newman, 1990; University of Tennessee, Knoxville, 2009) are honorary.
- Reportedly wrote more than 3,000 songs, among them “Joshua” (her first solo country No. 1, 1971), “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You”; inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001.
- Kept control of her publishing: in a July 1989 Interview magazine conversation she explained that she “had my own publishin’ company” and would not hand over the song to Elvis Presley’s manager.
- Co-owner of The Dollywood Company (the park reopened under her name on May 3, 1986) and founder of the Imagination Library (1995), which reported over 325 million books gifted as of June 2026.
None of this is a test score. Songwriting and decades of business judgment are real evidence of cognitive skill, but they also reflect talent, persistence and opportunity, and no school grades or exam results are on record to anchor a number, so the range is wide.

What an IQ of 125–140 actually means
Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.
Average is 100 by construction, and about two-thirds of people fall between 85 and 115. Take the test to place your own score on this scale.
| Score range | Classification | Share of people | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 – 114 | Average | ~68% | The range most people fall into. |
| 115 – 129 | Above average | ~13.6% | Roughly one person in seven. |
| 130 – 144 | Gifted | ~2% | The threshold most high-IQ societies use. |
| Above 144 | Highly gifted | ~0.1% | Figures above this range are extrapolated from the curve rather than measured. |
Percentages are approximate and describe a normal distribution. The same number means different things on tests with different standard deviations.
Thirty questions gives you a measured position on this exact scale — your score, your percentile and the ability breakdown behind it.

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, and sang on local radio and television in East Tennessee as a child. At thirteen she recorded the single “Puppy Love” for Goldband Records in Louisiana. She graduated from Sevier County High School in Sevierville, Tennessee, in 1964 and moved to Nashville the next day.
She signed with Monument Records in 1965, recorded “Dumb Blonde” in 1966, and released her debut album Hello, I’m Dolly in 1967. Porter Wagoner persuaded his label, RCA Victor, to sign her. “Joshua” (1971) was her first solo country No. 1; “Jolene,” released in late 1973, topped the country chart in February 1974, and “I Will Always Love You” reached No. 1 on the country chart in 1974. She starred in the film 9 to 5 (1980), whose theme was a Hot 100 chart-topper and an Oscar nominee. She is reported to have written more than 3,000 songs and entered the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001. Lady Gaga’s profile rests on a similar kind of record, a songwriting honor and no published test; on how creative achievement relates to test scores, see creativity and IQ.
She was a co-owner of The Dollywood Company, which operates the theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; Silver Dollar City Tennessee reopened as Dollywood on May 3, 1986. In 1988 she founded the nonprofit Dollywood Foundation, and in 1995 the Imagination Library, which mails one book a month to each enrolled child from birth until kindergarten. As of June 2026 the program reported over 325 million books gifted, more than 3.5 million a month, across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Republic of Ireland.
Carson-Newman gave her an honorary doctorate on October 21, 1990, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville awarded her a doctorate of humane and musical letters on May 8, 2009, only the second honorary degree in that university’s history. She entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999, received the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2006 and the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 80.

Where the 140–145 figure came from
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Dolly Parton’s IQ appears as a number on a handful of pages, and none of them cites a test. spclarke.com, a tribute page, says that “Dolly has an IQ of 145” and gives no source. LatestLY, crediting Deutsche Welle, wrote in a piece for her 80th birthday in January 2026, and again on August 26, 2026, that “multiple sources” had reported an IQ of at least 140, naming none. Hot 1027, a South African site, puts it at around 140. That is the whole chain: three pages, two numbers, no test, no tester, no date.
The Hot 1027 page shows how such a number gets made. It ties “around 140” to the wit in her first charting single, “Dumb Blonde,” which is an argument from a song title, not a measurement. Wit and business sense are real traits, but celebrity IQ numbers usually start as reputations and are then written down as scores. A 140 is also a specific claim about rarity: an IQ of 140 sits near the 99.6th percentile, and nothing in her record carries that kind of calibration.
The “dumb blonde” persona is the other half of the story. “Dumb Blonde,” written by Curly Putman, was recorded by Parton on September 23, 1966, at the Fred Foster Sound Studio in Nashville, and peaked at No. 24 on the country chart as her first hit. She did not write it. A line widely attributed to her, printed by American Songwriter and Grunge, says she is not offended by dumb-blonde jokes because she knows she is not dumb, and also knows she is not blonde. Neither outlet gives a dated original interview, so the wording is attributed rather than verified.
What can be sourced to her own words is a business decision. In a July 1989 Interview magazine conversation with William Stadiem, Parton explained why she would not give Elvis Presley’s manager the song “I Will Always Love You”: she “had my own publishin’ company” and did not want to start handing songs over. English Wikipedia describes the same episode as a refusal to sign over half the publishing. That is documented judgment, and it is why this range matches Shakira’s, whose circulating figure is also 140, and sits a few points above the 120–135 ranges for Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga. The extra points reflect the breadth of the documented organizational work, not any higher score, and the direction of the error is the usual one: the record supports a number at or below the one that circulates.
How we read a number →Checked her Wikipedia biography, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame and Grammy.com pages, and the August 2026 obituaries; none mentions a test, a score or an assessment.

The sources behind our estimate
The figures that circulate for Dolly Parton, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.
A flat 145 on a tribute page, and “at least 140” or “around 140” on two other sites, all credited to unnamed “sources.”
spclarke.com says “Dolly has an IQ of 145” with no test, date or citation. LatestLY, crediting Deutsche Welle, wrote in January 2026 and again on August 26, 2026 that “multiple sources” report an IQ of at least 140, and names none. Hot 1027, a South African site, says around 140 and links it to the wit of her first charting single, “Dumb Blonde.” No Dolly Parton IQ score on any page opened for this profile cites a test, a tester or a date.
Both circulating numbers sit at or above the top of the range the record supports, and the same unnamed “sources” stand behind each. The five points between 140 and 145 are precision nobody measured.

Dolly Parton — frequently asked
What is Dolly Parton’s IQ?
No IQ test result for Dolly Parton has ever been published. Figures of 140 and 145 circulate online, but the pages that print them cite no test and name no source. Our estimate, inferred from her documented songwriting, business and education record, is a range of 125 to 140, not a recovered score.
Did Dolly Parton ever take an IQ test?
No record of one exists in the pages checked for this profile, including her biographies, the Hall of Fame and Grammy pages and the August 2026 obituaries. Her documented education is a 1964 diploma from Sevier County High School in Sevierville, Tennessee. Any number attached to her therefore rests on reputation, not on a score report.
What was Dolly Parton’s estimated IQ level?
Our estimated range is 125 to 140, roughly the 95th to 99.6th percentile on a scale with a standard deviation of 15. It is an inference from documented achievement with a named weakness: no test, grades or exam record exists to anchor it. The circulating 140 to 145 sits at or above the top of that range.
Was Dolly Parton smart, and did she have a high IQ?
Her documented record points to high ability in the areas that can be checked: reportedly more than 3,000 songs written, a publishing company she kept control of, a theme park she co-owned, and a book program that reported over 325 million books gifted as of June 2026. A high IQ is plausible, but no test confirms any number.
Was Dolly Parton a smart businesswoman?
The documented record says so. She founded Owe-Par Publishing with Bill Owens, refused to give Elvis Presley’s manager the publishing on “I Will Always Love You,” co-owned The Dollywood Company and founded the Imagination Library in 1995. Business judgment is real evidence of ability, but it is not an IQ score.
What was Dolly Parton’s education level?
She graduated from Sevier County High School in Sevierville, Tennessee, in 1964 and moved to Nashville the next day. She held honorary doctorates from Carson-Newman (1990) and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2009). Those are honors, not earned degrees, and they do not translate into an IQ.
How does Dolly Parton’s estimated IQ compare with Shakira’s?
Both profiles land on the same range, 125 to 140, and Shakira’s circulating figure is also 140 with no test behind it. Each estimate is inferred from documented achievement rather than from a score, so the match says the two records are similar, not that either number was measured.
How does my IQ compare with Dolly Parton?
You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred.
