What is Madonna’s IQ?
A reported straight-A record, a dance scholarship, and a 140 whose paper trail starts with a 2011 photo gallery.

No IQ test result for Madonna has ever been published. What is on record is a University of Michigan dance scholarship, a school record Wikipedia describes as straight-A and a catalog she co-wrote and co-produced; the 140 attached to her name cites no test, and its earliest appearance found for this page is a 2011 CBS News gallery that says only that she “claims” it.

Madonna’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate120–135Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • Described by Wikipedia as a straight-A student at Rochester Adams High School; she graduated in January 1976 with a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan and studied there for about two years. No transcript or test score is published.
  • True Blue (June 30, 1986) was the first album on which she co-wrote and co-produced every track; she is listed among the producers of Ray of Light (1998) and primarily produced MDNA (2012) with collaborators.
  • Established the entertainment company Maverick in April 1992, spanning a record label, a film production unit, music publishing, television, book publishing and merchandising; Ray of Light was released on Maverick Records.
  • Seven Grammy Awards (grammy.com), induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, and recognition from Guinness World Records as the biggest-selling female recording artist (October 25, 2023).

None of this is a cognitive measurement. Madonna’s estimated IQ is inferred from school and career records with no degree and no published test, and chart success reflects talent, collaborators and timing as well as reasoning, so the range is wide and the 140 that circulates sits just above its top.

Background

Who Madonna is

Madonna Louise Ciccone was born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan. At Rochester Adams High School, Wikipedia describes her as a straight-A student and a member of the cheerleading squad; she began with classical piano lessons and then switched to ballet. She graduated in January 1976 with a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan, stayed about two years and left in 1978 to move to New York City. CBS News, citing the University of Michigan, reports that she studied there for two years before moving to New York.

Her debut album, Madonna, came out in 1983. True Blue (June 30, 1986) was the first album on which she co-wrote and co-produced every track, and Wikipedia reports that it reached No. 1 in 28 countries. In April 1992 she established Maverick, an entertainment company with a record label, a film production unit and divisions for music publishing, television, book publishing and merchandising. Ray of Light, released February 22, 1998 on Maverick Records, lists Madonna as a producer alongside William Orbit, Patrick Leonard and Marius de Vries. She primarily produced MDNA (2012) with Orbit and Martin Solveig.

The honors are institutional records. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008, according to Wikipedia, in her first year of eligibility; the Hall’s own page lists the year as 2008. Grammy.com shows seven wins, among them Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2007 for Confessions on a Dance Floor and Best Long Form Music Video in 2008 for The Confessions Tour. In October 2023 Guinness World Records renewed her status as the biggest-selling female recording artist, and its list of her records includes the most No. 1s on the US Dance Club Songs chart (50) and the most US multi-platinum albums by a female artist (12, shared with Barbra Streisand).

As of October 2026 she remains active: Confessions II, her fifteenth studio album, was released on July 3, 2026, according to Wikipedia, and Stereogum’s Madonna page lists its release on the same date. Her Celebration Tour began in London in October 2023 and ended in May 2024. None of this changes the IQ question, which still rests on the absence of a test; for what a record like hers can and cannot show, see what a genius-level IQ means.

Where it came from

Where the 140 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Madonna singing into a microphone in a black lace sleeve at the Rebel Heart Tour in Stockholm in November 2015

The Madonna IQ score that circulates is 140, and no test stands behind it. The earliest page found for this profile is a CBS News photo gallery, “Stars with high IQs,” dated April 7, 2011, which says she “claims” a 140 and names no test, date or examiner. On June 5, 2013, HuffPost, relaying the Mexican agency Notimex, listed Madonna (140) among celebrities it said came from Mensa International, and El Universo reported the same day that the Mensa study gave both Madonna and Shakira 140. HuffPost’s own page carries a June 6 update saying Mensa denied releasing any such list, and the page notes that Mensa accepts only members who score at the 98th percentile or higher (see the Mensa score requirement explained). The Mensa story was a layer added to a number that was already circulating.

From there the figure simply travels. Romper’s May 30, 2016 list says Madonna “also has an IQ of 140,” crediting Examiner; a t-online photo gallery prints 140 in the caption and 142 in the text beneath it; and a German article dated August 16, 2026 says the claim has surfaced for years in profiles and lists. None names a test. Riot IQ, a company that sells IQ tests and so has its own interest in the topic, looked for a test record, a school document or an interview in which she states a score and reported finding none. That is the usual pattern described in how celebrity IQ numbers originate: a round figure, repeated until the repetition looks like a source.

What the record does support is a lower number than 140, though not a low one. A school record that Wikipedia describes as straight-A, a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan, and a career in which she co-wrote and co-produced her own albums and, from April 1992, ran her own company, Maverick, are real evidence of ability, discipline and business judgment. They are not an IQ measurement. Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift are the closest comparisons on this site: pop singer-songwriters with documented writing and production credits and an unsourced figure, and Shakira was handed the same 140 in the same 2013 report.

Direction matters. A score near 140 would sit at about the 99.6th percentile on a scale with a standard deviation of 15, and sourced records for performers almost always support a lower range than the circulating number. Music success is not an IQ test: chart records, Grammy Awards and sales reflect talent, collaborators, timing and promotion as well as reasoning. The honest statement is narrower. The documented record is consistent with a high estimated IQ level in the 120–135 band, and it neither supports nor excludes the specific figure of 140.

A Madonna IQ of 140 (142 on some pages) circulates in photo galleries, listicles and FAQ pages, sometimes with a Mensa label attached.

What we foundNo sourced test result

No published IQ test result for Madonna exists. Pages checked: a CBS News gallery, “Stars with high IQs” (April 7, 2011), says she “claims” a 140 and names no test; HuffPost (June 5, 2013, relaying the agency Notimex) and El Universo (June 5, 2013) credit Mensa International, and HuffPost’s page carries a June 6 update that Mensa denied releasing any list; Romper (May 30, 2016) repeats 140 and credits Examiner; a t-online gallery prints 140 in the caption and 142 in the text; a German article of August 16, 2026 says the claim has appeared for years. None cites a test, and Riot IQ (August 23, 2026) found no test record, school document or interview.

The circulating figures sit only 5 to 7 points above the top of the range this page can defend, which makes them easy to believe. A t-online entry that prints both 140 and 142 shows the digits are decoration, not data.

Questions

Madonna — frequently asked

What is Madonna’s IQ?

No IQ test result for Madonna has been published. The 140 that circulates online, sometimes 142, cites no test; this page estimates 120–135 from her documented school, songwriting, production and business record, which is an inference, not a score.

Where does Madonna’s IQ of 140 come from?

The earliest page found is a CBS News gallery dated April 7, 2011, which says she “claims” a 140 without naming a test. A June 2013 wire report then credited Mensa International, which denied releasing any list. Later listicles repeat the number with no test attached.

Did Madonna ever take an IQ test?

No test, date, examiner or score has been published, and no interview or document stating one was found for this page. What exists is a biographical description: Wikipedia calls her a straight-A student at Rochester Adams High School, with no transcript or test results published.

Is Madonna a member of Mensa?

No confirmed record says so. A 2013 wire report listed her at 140 and credited Mensa International; HuffPost’s page carries an update that Mensa denied releasing any list, and Riot IQ reports she has never publicly confirmed membership. Mensa admits members who score at or above the 98th percentile on a qualifying test.

Is Madonna a genius?

Nothing published measures it. The record shows straight-A grades per Wikipedia, co-writing and co-producing of her own albums, a company she founded in 1992 and Guinness World Records recognition as the biggest-selling female recording artist. That supports a high estimate of 120–135, below the 140-plus levels popular lists call genius.

Is Madonna smart or intelligent?

The record points to a capable, high-achieving professional: straight-A grades per Wikipedia, a University of Michigan dance scholarship, credits as co-writer and co-producer, seven Grammy Awards and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2008. A reputation for a high IQ rests on that record, not on a measured score.

How does Madonna’s estimated IQ compare with Lady Gaga’s and Taylor Swift’s?

The three share the same 120–135 band on this site: all are singer-songwriters with documented writing and production work, and none has a published IQ test. The circulating figures differ (Madonna 140, Taylor Swift 160, Lady Gaga 166), and none is traced to a test.

How does my IQ compare with Madonna?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other musicians profiles, starting with Brian May.
