What is Thanos’ IQ?
No page prints a Thanos IQ; the nearest number is a 6-of-7 “super-genius” Power Grid rating that Looper reports.

Thanos has no published IQ: no comic, film or page we could open gives one, and the nearest figure is a 6 out of 7 “super-genius” rating on Marvel’s Power Grid, per Looper. This site’s estimated IQ level for Thanos as written in the main Marvel comics and the films is 175–195, level with Tony Stark.
Thanos’ estimated IQ
- Wikipedia’s article on the character lists “Genius-level intellect” and “Master tactician” among his abilities and calls him a supergenius in virtually all known fields of advanced science and a master strategist; Looper (Jonathan H. Kantor, August 8, 2025) reports 6 on Marvel’s Power Grid, “super-genius,” one step below the “omniscient” 7 it says is usually reserved for gods and cosmic entities.
- In The Infinity Gauntlet (six issues, July to December 1991, written by Jim Starlin) he gathers all six Infinity Gems, forms the Gauntlet and erases half of all living beings; Wikipedia credits his adult strength to his “superior scientific knowledge” and says he once conducted extensive research on genetics.
- In Avengers: Infinity War (April 27, 2018) he takes all six Stones across Xandar, Vormir, Titan and Wakanda, and when Wanda Maximoff destroys the Mind Stone, Wikipedia’s plot summary has him use the Time Stone to reverse her actions.
- Wikipedia’s article on the film version cites The Washington Post praising his “deep, reflective intelligence,” and Gulf News (November 5, 2018) says he excels in every field of advanced science; neither gives a number.
- The limits are written in: on Titan the heroes briefly subdue him before he breaks their hold, in Avengers: Endgame (April 26, 2019) Tony Stark steals the Stones and uses them to disintegrate him and his army, and Wikipedia says Adam Warlock expects him to lose the Gauntlet because he feels unworthy of it.
This range rates a portrayal, not a person, and not the actor who plays him: Thanos is as sharp as each writer needs, and much of what makes him formidable (the Gauntlet, the Stones, the Snap) is power rather than reasoning. The band is inferred from strategy, science and planning, and a fictional range this high describes authorial intent, not anything a test could confirm.

What an IQ of 175–195 actually means
Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.
| Score range | Classification | Share of people | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 – 114 | Average | ~68% | The range most people fall into. |
| 115 – 129 | Above average | ~13.6% | Roughly one person in seven. |
| 130 – 144 | Gifted | ~2% | The threshold most high-IQ societies use. |
| Above 144 | Highly gifted | ~0.1% | Figures above this range are extrapolated from the curve rather than measured. |
Percentages are approximate and describe a normal distribution. The same number means different things on tests with different standard deviations.
Thirty questions gives you a measured position on this exact scale — your score, your percentile and the ability breakdown behind it.
Find out in 30 minutes →Who Thanos is
Thanos is a Marvel Comics character created by Jim Starlin, who conceived him during college psychology classes, inspired, per Wikipedia, by Sigmund Freud’s concept of the death drive, or Thanatos; the infobox also credits Mike Friedrich. He first appears in The Invincible Iron Man #55, cover-dated February 1973, and the storyline continues in Captain Marvel #25–33 (March 1973 to January 1974). He is not the Greek figure Thanatos, whom Wikipedia calls the personification of death in Greek mythology. Thanos was born on Titan, Saturn’s moon, to the Eternals A’lars and Sui-San; Wikipedia lists his species as an Eternal–Deviant hybrid, names his brother as Eros of Titan, and gives him the alias the Mad Titan. In the main comics his motive is devotion to Mistress Death, the personified Death: he courts her, and later erases half of all life to win her.
The comics that matter most for the Thanos IQ in comics question include Starlin’s own. The Thanos Quest (two issues, September and October 1990) precedes The Infinity Gauntlet (six issues, July to December 1991, written by Starlin, with pencils by George Pérez and then Ron Lim), in which Thanos gathers all six Infinity Gems, mounts them on a gauntlet and uses it to erase half of all living beings. Wikipedia says the act is soon undone by Nebula and Adam Warlock, and that Warlock reads Thanos’s soul and expects him to lose the Gauntlet because Thanos feels unworthy of its power. Infinity War (1992, six issues) and Infinity Crusade (1993) follow, and Thanos Rising (a five-issue miniseries from April 2013) comes later. In the Gauntlet story the weakness is self-doubt, not ignorance, a theme our note on why smart people make bad decisions covers for real people.
On screen, Josh Brolin plays Thanos through voice and motion capture. He signed a multi-film contract in May 2014 and appears in Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1, 2014), in an uncredited mid-credits scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1, 2015), and in Avengers: Infinity War (April 27, 2018) and Avengers: Endgame (April 26, 2019); Damion Poitier played him in The Avengers (2012). In the films his stated reason is that the universe is finite and so are its resources. Infinity War was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and its plot has him subdue Thor and overpower the Hulk, the form of Bruce Banner, when he intercepts the ship carrying Asgard’s survivors. In Endgame, per Wikipedia, a 2014 Thanos learns of the heroes’ plan when Nebula’s implants link with her past self, then is brought to the present. Alternate versions appear in Endgame, What If…? (2021–2024) and Marvel Zombies (2025), so other versions differ from the one rated here.
Placed against the fictional peers on this site, 175–195 puts Thanos level with Batman and Tony Stark (both 175–195), five points under Bruce Banner (180–200), ten under Doctor Doom (185–205) and below Reed Richards (190–210). The reasoning is about evidence, not rank. Thanos is documented as a scientist, a researcher in genetics and a strategist, and the Power Grid 6 matches the top tier Looper describes, but no page we could open credits him with an invention on the scale of Doom’s time machine or Reed’s long record of devices, and both his comics and film defeats come from misjudging people more than machines. None of that is a genius IQ level; it is a portrayal, which is why the range is a band and not a point.
Thanos: the documented record
The estimate above rests on this record. Every entry here is a matter of public fact, which is more than can be said for the number itself.
- 1973The Invincible Iron Man #55 (cover-dated February 1973) introduces Thanos; Jim Starlin, with Mike Friedrich. The storyline continues in Captain Marvel #25–33 (March 1973 to January 1974).
- 1990The Thanos Quest, a two-issue series (September and October 1990), is among the Thanos stories Wikipedia dates.
- 1991The Infinity Gauntlet, six issues (July to December 1991): Thanos gathers all six Infinity Gems and erases half of all living beings.
- 2012Damion Poitier plays Thanos in The Avengers, his first screen appearance.
- 2013Thanos Rising, a five-issue miniseries, begins in April 2013.
- 2014Josh Brolin signs on in May and plays Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy (released August 1).
- 2015Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1) ends with a mid-credits scene in which Thanos dons a gauntlet and vows to retrieve the Infinity Stones himself.
- 2018Avengers: Infinity War (April 27): Thanos collects all six Stones, using the Time Stone to reverse Wanda’s destruction of the Mind Stone.
- 2019Avengers: Endgame (April 26): Stark steals the Stones and uses them to disintegrate Thanos and his army.
- 2025–2026Looper (August 8, 2025) calls him a “super-genius (6 on the Power Grid)” and littafi.com (July 31, 2026) ranks him fourth among the smartest Marvel characters; neither prints an IQ.
Why no figure circulates
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Thanos’s IQ is not a number Marvel has published in a comic or a film, and no page we could open prints one. Searching for “thanos iq” or “thanos iq level” turns up descriptions, not scores. Wikipedia’s article on the character lists “Genius-level intellect” and “Master tactician” among his abilities. Looper (Jonathan H. Kantor, August 8, 2025) writes that he is a “super-genius (6 on the Power Grid)”; littafi.com’s “The Smartest Marvel Characters, Ranked” (Prisca Nwabude, July 31, 2026) places him fourth and gives no number and no method. The 6 is a position on Marvel’s out-of-seven Power Grid, which Looper explains as 4 “gifted,” 5 “genius,” 6 “super-genius” and 7 “omniscient”: a character-sheet label, not an IQ. For how numbers like these spread from one character to the next, see our note on where celebrity IQ numbers come from.
Thanos’s IQ in the comics is likewise described, never measured. Since The Invincible Iron Man #55 (cover-dated February 1973), writers have given him what Wikipedia calls “a supergenius in virtually all known fields of advanced science” and the skills of “a master strategist,” and its account of his adult life says he raised his powers through his “superior scientific knowledge” and once conducted extensive research on genetics. littafi.com goes further and calls him a “master geneticist,” without a source, and Looper says he “devises plans decades out,” also without an issue number. The Power Grid 6 is Looper’s report, and it appears here as Looper reports it.
Thanos’s IQ in the MCU is no better documented. No Marvel Cinematic Universe film states a number; the films show him acting. In Avengers: Infinity War he takes the Power Stone from Xandar, the Space Stone from the Tesseract, the Soul Stone on Vormir, the Time Stone when Doctor Strange trades it for Stark’s life, and the Mind Stone in Wakanda, where, per Wikipedia’s plot summary, he uses the Time Stone to reverse Wanda’s attempt to destroy it. Wikipedia’s article on the film version cites The Washington Post praising his “deep, reflective intelligence,” and in a March 2018 interview SlashFilm reports, the actor who plays him called the character “way more intelligent than anybody else in the movie, by far.” That is a verdict about a character from people who write and portray him, not a score. As with every range on this list, the top of the band is above what a test can separate, which the IQ ceiling effect explains.
The versus queries fail for the same reason. For Thanos IQ vs Tony Stark, no source prints a score for either: the 270 that circulates for Tony traces to uncited estimates, as his profile shows. What the films show is a sequence of plot outcomes. In Infinity War, Thanos wounds Stark on Titan and Strange trades the Time Stone to spare him; in Avengers: Endgame, per Wikipedia, Stark steals the Stones and uses them to disintegrate Thanos and his army. For Reed Richards, Looper prints 267 and says he has beaten everyone from Thanos to Galactus: a story claim, and a number that Reed’s profile traces to the Ultimate universe.
How we read a number →Q2276627: label “Thanos,” description “fictional character in Marvel Comics,” so this is the comics character; the Marvel Cinematic Universe version is a separate item, Q64825451, and other Thanos items are a family name, a given name, a fossil genus and a village.
Infobox: The Invincible Iron Man #55 (February 1973), created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich, Eternal–Deviant hybrid, “Genius-level intellect,” “Master tactician.” Text: Starlin’s college psychology classes and Freud’s death drive; Captain Marvel #25–33; birth on Titan to A’lars and Sui-San; “a supergenius in virtually all known fields of advanced science,” “a master strategist”; “superior scientific knowledge”; genetics research; the Mistress Death motive; dates for the Thanos Quest, Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, Infinity Crusade and Thanos Rising; Brolin’s films. No IQ figure appears.
First appearance The Avengers (2012), played by Damion Poitier; Brolin signed a multi-film contract in May 2014 and debuted in Guardians of the Galaxy; The Washington Post’s praise of his “deep, reflective intelligence”; alternate versions in Endgame, What If…? (2021–2024) and Marvel Zombies (2025). No IQ figure appears.
Infinity War (US release April 27, 2018; the Russo brothers; Markus and McFeely): the order in which Thanos takes the Stones, the Titan fight, Strange trading the Time Stone for Stark’s life, and Thanos using the Time Stone to reverse Wanda’s destruction of the Mind Stone. Endgame (April 26, 2019): the 2014 Thanos, and Stark using the Stones to disintegrate Thanos and his army. Guardians (August 1, 2014; James Gunn): Brolin uncredited, Thanos mostly by hologram. Age of Ultron (May 1, 2015): mid-credits scene with the gauntlet.
Infinity Gauntlet: written by Starlin, pencils by George Pérez then Ron Lim, six issues July to December 1991; Thanos gathers the six Gems and erases half of all living beings; Warlock expects him to lose the Gauntlet because he feels unworthy. Thanatos: in Greek mythology the personification of death, a different figure.
Calls Thanos “a super-genius (6 on the Power Grid)” and “one of the most brilliant tacticians in the universe”; explains the Power Grid intelligence steps (4 gifted, 5 genius, 6 super-genius, 7 omniscient); prints an IQ of 267 for Reed Richards and none for Thanos; says Reed “has beaten everyone from Thanos to Galactus.” No method behind the Thanos entry.
Ranks Thanos fourth; calls him a “master geneticist” with intellect on a galactic scale; credits him with ascending to near godhood through strategy and planning. Gives no IQ figure for Thanos, Tony Stark or Reed Richards, and names no source for any claim.
SlashFilm reports an Entertainment Weekly interview in which the actor describes Thanos as “way more intelligent than anybody else in the movie, by far” (an opinion about the character; no score). Gulf News says Thanos “excels in every field of advanced science.” Neither gives an IQ.
Read as a transcript, which does not mark speakers: the line that the universe is finite and “its resources finite,” and the exchange in which the Time Stone is offered in return for sparing a life.
Checked: Wikipedia’s comics and MCU articles, Looper, littafi.com, SlashFilm and Gulf News. None prints an IQ for Thanos; the only rating is the Power Grid 6, which is Looper’s report.
The sources behind our estimate
The figures that circulate for Thanos, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.
No IQ figure for Thanos turns up on any page we could open. What circulates is descriptive: Looper’s “The 15 Smartest Marvel Characters, Ranked” (Jonathan H. Kantor, August 8, 2025) calls him a “super-genius (6 on the Power Grid)”; littafi.com’s “The Smartest Marvel Characters, Ranked” (Prisca Nwabude, July 31, 2026) ranks him fourth and gives no number or method; and SlashFilm (Ben Pearson, March 9, 2018) reports the actor who plays him calling the character “way more intelligent than anybody else in the movie, by far.”
No page we could open gives Thanos an IQ. Checked: Wikipedia’s articles on the comics character and the Marvel Cinematic Universe version (genius-level intellect, master tactician, no number); Looper (the Power Grid 6, and an IQ of 267 for Reed Richards but none for Thanos); littafi.com (a ranking, no number, no method); and Gulf News (excels in every field of advanced science). The Power Grid 6 is Looper’s report and is given here as Looper reports it. Because no page prints a Thanos figure, there is no method to assess.
There is no circulating figure to set against the range, so the spread shows only this site’s Thanos estimated IQ: 175 to 195, a 20-point band. The 6 on the Power Grid is not on the same axis: it is a position on a seven-step character-rating scale, and nothing we read converts it to an IQ. A specific IQ figure for Thanos would be a fan estimate with no test behind it.

Thanos — frequently asked
What is Thanos’s IQ?
Thanos has no published IQ: no comic, film or page we could open states one, and this site’s estimate for the character as written is 175–195. The nearest figure is a 6 out of 7 “super-genius” intelligence rating on Marvel’s Power Grid, which Looper reports; it is a rating label, not an IQ score.
What is Thanos’s IQ level in the comics?
No comic gives a number. Wikipedia lists his abilities as “Genius-level intellect” and “Master tactician,” and Looper reports 6 on Marvel’s Power Grid. His comics feats are The Thanos Quest (1990) and The Infinity Gauntlet (1991), where he gathers all six Infinity Gems. Those are plot events, not test results; this site rates him 175–195.
What is Thanos’s IQ in the MCU?
No Marvel Cinematic Universe film states an IQ for Thanos. In Avengers: Infinity War (2018) he collects all six Stones, and Wikipedia says The Washington Post praised his “deep, reflective intelligence.” This site’s 175–195 estimate covers the films and the main comics, but other versions, such as those in What If…?, differ.
How much IQ does Thanos have according to fan lists?
Fan lists give him a rank, not a number. Looper calls him a “super-genius” and littafi.com ranks him fourth among the smartest Marvel characters; neither prints an IQ for Thanos or explains a method. Looper does print 267 for Reed Richards, so the missing Thanos figure reflects a gap in the sources, not a low score.
Is Thanos smart?
Within the stories, yes. Wikipedia calls him a supergenius in virtually all known fields of advanced science and a master strategist, and Looper rates him 6 of 7 on the Power Grid. The stories also show his plans failing, so smart does not mean unbeatable. None of this is a measured IQ.
Thanos IQ vs Tony Stark: who is smarter?
No sourced number settles it. This site rates Thanos 175–195 and Tony Stark 175–195, so the ranges fully overlap. On screen, Thanos wounds Stark on Titan in Infinity War, while in Endgame Stark steals the Stones and uses them to disintegrate Thanos and his army; both are plot outcomes, not scores.
Thanos IQ vs Reed Richards: who is smarter?
No sourced number settles it. This site rates Thanos 175–195 and Reed Richards 190–210. Looper prints 267 for Reed and says he has beaten everyone from Thanos to Galactus, but that is a story claim, not a test, and Reed’s profile traces the 267 to the Ultimate universe.
Did Thanos take an IQ test?
No. Thanos is fictional, and no comic or film shows him sitting a test or receiving a score. He is also not the Greek figure Thanatos, whom Wikipedia calls the personification of death; Jim Starlin was inspired by Freud’s death drive, also called Thanatos. Every rating attached to Thanos is a writer’s or list-maker’s judgment.
How does my IQ compare with Thanos?
You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.
Where does this estimate come from?
From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other fictional profiles, starting with Sherlock Holmes.
