What is Joe Goldberg’s IQ?
No episode of You gives Joe Goldberg an IQ, just a bookstore, a reader’s knowledge and a professor’s alias.

Joe Goldberg’s IQ is never stated in You (Lifetime and Netflix, September 9, 2018 to April 24, 2025), and the 125–130 that circulates is an unsourced fan guess. This site’s estimated IQ for the character, inferred from his literary knowledge, his work as a bookstore manager and later a university English professor under an alias, is 130–150.

Joe Goldberg’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate130–150Character analysis (fiction)
What the estimate rests on
  • The pilot (Lifetime, September 9, 2018) sets the job and the expertise: Wikipedia’s synopsis calls him a bookstore manager in New York, and the pilot’s script explains the shop as craft knowledge, a book’s value being “all about condition” in a place kept at 65 degrees and 40 percent humidity.
  • Kepnes’s novel (Atria/Emily Bestler Books, September 30, 2014) builds him as a self-taught reader: Apple Books’ review of You says Joe never went to college but knows more about literature than most of his more affluent peers.
  • Across the series the work keeps giving him jobs that run on books and language, per Wikipedia: manager of Mooney’s in New York (season 1), restoring rare books at a library to sell (season 3), and a university English professor under the alias Jonathan Moore in London (season 4, 2023).
  • Reviewers credit him with cleverness rather than a number: Audible’s editors (Yvonne Durant, February 9, 2023) call him “very smart, and extremely crafty,” and netzwelt.de (Katharina Grothkopp, April 21, 2025) says viewers are often impressed by his intelligence.
  • The record also caps him: the novel says he never went to college, the professorship in the series is an alias, and no source credits him with scientific, mathematical or technical training, which keeps the range below the top of this site’s fictional roster.

No test exists and neither the novels nor the series score him, so this is an inference about how the writers rank the character, not a measurement. His documented strengths are verbal, literary and professional, and the work never shows him on a quantitative task.

Background

Who Joe Goldberg is

Joe Goldberg is the lead character of Caroline Kepnes’s thriller novels and of the series You. The first novel, You, was published on September 30, 2014 by Atria/Emily Bestler Books, and Hidden Bodies followed on February 23, 2016. The series, developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble, has five seasons and 50 episodes: season 1 aired on Lifetime from September 9 to November 11, 2018, and the rest moved to Netflix, with season 2 on December 26, 2019, season 3 on October 15, 2021, season 4 in two parts on February 9 and March 9, 2023, and season 5 on April 24, 2025. Wikipedia calls Joe the “villain protagonist” of the books. Penn Badgley plays him in the series, and this page rates the character as written.

Is Joe Goldberg smart? The work answers with reading and work history, not a school record. Apple Books’ review of the novel says Joe never went to college but knows more about literature than most of his more affluent peers. The series gives him the title: Wikipedia’s synopsis of the pilot calls him a bookstore manager in New York, and the pilot’s script has the shop explained as craft knowledge, a book’s value being “all about condition,” with the room held at 65 degrees and 40 percent humidity. The shop’s owner, Ivan Mooney, is played by Mark Blum. No source gives Joe a degree or a test result; the case for a high range rests on what he knows and the jobs he is trusted with.

The later seasons keep him among books while moving him between cities and names. Season 2 (2019) is set in Los Angeles, where he gets a job at Anavrin; season 3 (2021) is set in Madre Linda, California, then Paris, with Joe restoring rare books at a library to sell, per Wikipedia; season 4 (2023) puts him in London as Jonathan Moore, a university English professor; and season 5 (2025) returns him to New York, where he reopens Mooney’s. Wikipedia’s cast list for season 5 includes a former student of his. The professorship is an alias, so it shows that he can pass as a literature teacher, not that the writers give him a doctorate. How reading relates to a score is covered in reading and IQ.

Where does this leave the number? Against the fictional roster on this site, 130–150 sits just under Walter White (140–160) and Patrick Jane (140–160), overlaps Mike Ross (135–155) and Tony Soprano (125–145), and is well below the characters whose shows state a high number aloud, such as Sheldon Cooper (175–195, stated 187). The ceiling is the lack of any quantitative or technical feat: nothing in the record has him solving, building or proving anything beyond language, books and clever plans. The floor is the consistency of the record, five seasons in which the writers keep handing him literary and professional roles. The range rates the character as written, from the novels and the series.

Where it came from

Where the 125–130 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Penn Badgley, the actor who played Joe Goldberg in the series You, with tousled dark curly hair and light stubble, in an olive-green jacket over a dark shirt, photographed outdoors in September 2012

Joe Goldberg’s IQ is a number You never gives, and the one that circulates, 125–130, comes from a German FAQ site rather than from the show. Küchen Fibel’s page “Wie viel IQ hat Joe Goldberg?” (March 22, 2026) opens by saying there is no official IQ value for Joe, then prints a line it labels as coming from reddit.com: if Dexter Morgan is 140 to 145, Joe is 125 to 130. A second page, “Wie hoch ist der IQ von Joe Goldberg?” (January 29, 2026), repeats that line and adds that his portrayal points to a very high IQ above 130, though no number is named. Neither page names a test, an episode or a method. It is the pattern traced in where celebrity IQ numbers come from: a guess in a comment thread is copied until it reads as an answer.

What is Joe Goldberg’s IQ by the work’s own account? The series supplies behavior and one off-hand remark, not a number, and descriptions of Kepnes’s novels give none either. In the pilot (Lifetime, September 9, 2018, written by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble and directed by Lee Toland Krieger) the script has a remark attributed to the bookstore’s owner, Mr. Mooney: that all books add up to one essential truth, that life is pretty much unbearable if your IQ is above a certain number, and that “the number is not even that high.” No figure is named and no one is scored. The transcripts of all 50 episodes contain one other use of the word, a taunt in a season 5 family scene aimed at a different character. Treat this as no stated IQ found, not as proof that none exists. For what research says about high scores and well-being, see IQ and happiness.

Joe Goldberg IQ vs Dexter Morgan is the comparison the fan figure rests on, and neither show settles it. Dexter Morgan has no profile on this site, so no estimate is offered for him; the nearer comparisons are already here. Mike Ross (135–155) is the other television lead who works in a profession without the usual credential, and Patrick Jane (140–160) is a lead whose show also states no number. Each has a signature feat the writers keep returning to, Ross’s recall and Jane’s reading of people, while Joe’s documented strengths are literary knowledge and a run of new jobs and cities, which is why this page sets him a notch lower. Tony Soprano (125–145) is the nearest range to the fan guess, and his show does state a number, 136.

What would a Joe Goldberg IQ level of 125–130 mean if taken at face value? On the usual scale (mean 100, standard deviation 15), 125 is about 1.7 standard deviations above average, roughly 1 person in 21, and 130 is two standard deviations out, about 1 in 44; this page’s 150 is 3.3 standard deviations, roughly 1 in 2,300 (our arithmetic from the normal curve). A score near 140, the middle of this page’s range, is covered in what an IQ of 140 means, and the label fans reach for, “genius,” is taken apart in what counts as a genius IQ level. A character cannot sit a test, so both the fan guess and the estimate here describe how the writing ranks him, not a measurement.

The evidence

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for Joe Goldberg, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited125–130

Küchen Fibel, a German FAQ site, prints two pages on the question. “Wie viel IQ hat Joe Goldberg?” (March 22, 2026) says there is no official IQ and quotes 125–130, a line the page labels as from reddit.com: if Dexter Morgan is 140–145, Joe is 125–130. “Wie hoch ist der IQ von Joe Goldberg?” (January 29, 2026) repeats the line and adds that his portrayal suggests a very high IQ, above 130, though none is named. People also type “joe goldberg iq level,” “joe goldberg iq estimate,” “joe goldberg iq feats,” “is joe goldberg smart” and “joe goldberg iq vs dexter.”

What we foundNo IQ in canon; 125–130 is an unsourced fan guess

No episode of You gives Joe Goldberg an IQ score. Transcripts of all 50 episodes on Springfield! Springfield use the word “IQ” twice: in the pilot, where the bookstore’s owner is quoted as saying that life is pretty much unbearable above a certain IQ and that “the number is not even that high,” with no figure and no one scored; and in a season 5 family scene (“Blood Will Have Blood,” episode 2), as a taunt aimed at another character. Wikipedia’s articles on the character, the series and the first novel carry no IQ. Küchen Fibel itself says no official value exists; its 125–130 is a comparison with Dexter Morgan, with no test, episode or method behind it.

The fan figure and this page’s range touch at 130: 125–130 sits at the floor of 130–150 rather than above it, so here the usual direction of error is reversed. On the usual scale (mean 100, standard deviation 15), 125 is roughly 1 person in 21, 130 about 1 in 44 and 150 about 1 in 2,300 (our arithmetic from the normal curve). The fan guess rests on a comparison with a different character and the range on this page rests on the documented work history; neither is a measurement.

Questions

Joe Goldberg — frequently asked

What is Joe Goldberg’s IQ?

Joe Goldberg’s IQ is not stated in the series You (2018–2025): no episode gives a number or shows a test, so there is no canon IQ. This site’s estimated IQ for the character, inferred from his literary knowledge and work history, is 130–150. The 125–130 that circulates is an unsourced fan guess.

What is Joe Goldberg’s estimated IQ level, and where does 125–130 come from?

The 125–130 comes from Küchen Fibel, a German FAQ site, which labels it as a reddit.com comment: if Dexter Morgan is 140–145, Joe is 125–130. Its pages of January 29 and March 22, 2026 name no test, episode or method and say no official IQ exists. This site’s estimate is 130–150.

Does You ever state Joe Goldberg’s IQ or show him taking an IQ test?

No. Transcripts of all 50 episodes contain no IQ score for Joe. The pilot (September 9, 2018) has a remark attributed to the bookstore’s owner that life is unbearable above a certain IQ and that “the number is not even that high,” with no figure. Treat this as no stated IQ found, not as proof that none exists.

Is Joe Goldberg smart, or a genius?

The work frames him as well-read and resourceful: Apple Books’ review says he knows more about literature than his more affluent peers, and reviewers at Audible and netzwelt.de call him very smart or intelligent. He manages a bookstore and, in season 4, works as an English professor under an alias. That is smart as a character trait, not a measured score or a test-defined genius.

Joe Goldberg IQ vs Patrick Jane or Mike Ross: who is higher?

On this site Patrick Jane is estimated at 140–160, Mike Ross at 135–155 and Joe Goldberg at 130–150, so Joe ranks slightly lower. All three are character estimates, not scores, and none of their shows states a number. Dexter Morgan, the usual fan comparison, has no profile here. Jane and Ross each have a signature feat; Joe’s are literary knowledge and new jobs and cities.

What are Joe Goldberg’s intellectual feats in You?

The documented ones are literary and professional: managing Mooney’s bookstore in New York (season 1), restoring rare books at a library (season 3), teaching as English professor Jonathan Moore in London (season 4) and reopening Mooney’s (season 5). The novel adds that he never went to college yet outreads his peers. These are feats of knowledge, not test results.

Is a Joe Goldberg IQ number a real test result?

No. A character never sits a test, so every Joe Goldberg IQ number is an opinion: the 125–130 in circulation is a fan guess based on a comparison with another character, and this site’s 130–150 is an inference from documented behavior and work history. Treat both as readings of how the writing ranks him, not measurements.

How does my IQ compare with Joe Goldberg?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other fictional profiles, starting with Sherlock Holmes.
