Elvis Presley’s IQ score has never been published: no test result exists, and the Army aptitude screening he went through in 1958 was never released. The “IQ 70” on two websites names no test, and the “IQ 88” in online posts traces to no record we could find. The documented record shows a B-and-C student who graduated on time and a musician who played by ear.

Elvis Presley’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate105–125Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • Graduated from L. C. Humes High School in Memphis on June 3, 1953, on a report-card record of mostly B’s and C’s, with an A in English in tenth grade and an F in typing (Graceland’s account of his school years).
  • Learned guitar and piano without being able to read music; Wikipedia’s account says he played rhythm acoustic guitar on most of his Sun recordings and his 1950s RCA Victor albums.
  • Went through two days of Army tests and processing at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, in March 1958, served until 1960 and held the rank of sergeant; the test results were never published.
  • Three GRAMMY Awards (1968, 1973, 1975), the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award (1971) and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction (1986), which document achievement as a performer rather than cognitive measurement.
  • Set against a school record that is fair rather than exceptional: a teacher’s first impression of “sweet and average” (Mississippi Department of Archives and History), then mostly B’s and C’s, ending with mostly C’s in eleventh grade.

No test result is public, so this is an estimated IQ for Elvis Presley inferred from a school record and a performing career, not a recovered IQ score. Grades are a thin anchor, and the strongest evidence (ear, voice, stage command) overlaps only loosely with what IQ tests measure, which is why the range is wide.

Background

Who Elvis Presley was

Elvis Aaron Presley was born January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, and died August 16, 1977, in Memphis, Tennessee. A teacher described him as “sweet and average” when he began elementary school, according to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and a Tupelo sixth-grade report card for 1946–47 that sold at Guernsey’s shows an A in spelling and in music and a D in arithmetic and geography. The family moved to Memphis in November 1948 and he enrolled at L. C. Humes High School. Graceland’s account of his school years records a C in arithmetic, music and science and an A in language in eighth grade, mostly B’s and a few C’s in ninth, B’s and C’s in tenth with an A in English and an F in typing, and a report card filled with C’s in eleventh. It describes him as a “fair” student who excelled in English and loved to read. He graduated on June 3, 1953.

Music came by ear. He received his first guitar for his birthday and took lessons from two uncles and a pastor at his church, and he could not read music. In 1953 he paid to record a two-sided acetate, “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin”, at the Memphis Recording Service run by Sam Phillips. A session on the evening of July 5, 1954, unproductive until late in the night, led to “That’s All Right”, backed with “Blue Moon of Kentucky”, his first Sun single. Wikipedia’s account says he played rhythm acoustic guitar on most of his Sun recordings and his 1950s RCA Victor albums, and piano on “Old Shep” and “First in Line” on the 1956 album Elvis; Henry Pleasants, quoted there, put his voice at two octaves and a third.

RCA Victor acquired his Sun contract on November 21, 1955 for $40,000, and his first RCA single, “Heartbreak Hotel”, released in January 1956, became a number-one hit in the US. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Presley page quotes John Lennon saying that hearing it changed his life. Presley was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 24, 1958, served until 1960 with Headquarters Company, 1st Medium Tank Battalion, 32d Armor, 3d Armored Division, and held the rank of sergeant with the Good Conduct Medal. Back in the studio he recorded From Elvis in Memphis (June 1969), his first secular, non-soundtrack album from a dedicated studio period in eight years, and he assembled a new backing band led by guitarist James Burton for his 1969 live engagement.

The Recording Academy gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1971, making him the sixth recipient. GRAMMY.com lists three competitive wins, all in gospel categories, and 14 nominations: Best Sacred Performance for “How Great Thou Art” (1968 ceremony, for 1967 recordings), Best Inspirational Performance for “He Touched Me” (1973) and Best Inspirational Performance (Non-Classical) for “How Great Thou Art” (1975). Seven of his recordings, among them “Don’t Be Cruel”, “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock”, are in the GRAMMY Hall of Fame, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. These are documented achievements, not cognitive measurements; Michael Jackson, whose estimated range of 110–130 on this site also rests on achievement rather than a test, is the closest comparison in stature.

Where it came from

Where the 70 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Elvis Presley smiling in a light open-collared shirt in a 1958 magazine photograph

Elvis Presley’s IQ has no measured source. The figure most often attached to his name is 70, and neither page we opened that prints it names a test. kuechenfibel.de, a German question-and-answer site, says he reached a “measured IQ of 70” (gemessenen IQ von 70) and links to a Cicero article for the full answer; a second page on the same site, dated August 4, 2025, repeats the sentence. calendar-australia.com says that school reports show an IQ of 70, links to biogs.com and does not say which reports. Each page points on to a further page (the Cicero article, biogs.com) rather than naming a test. That is the whole paper trail for “Elvis Presley IQ 70”: two sites, no test, no examiner, no date.

Elvis Presley IQ 88 is harder to pin down, and has no source we could verify. It appears in a few online posts that name no test, examiner or date, and an unsourced post is not a record. The pages that do carry an authority voice say the opposite. Riot IQ, a testing company, published an article on whether Elvis Presley was intelligent (Dr. Russell T. Warne, March 17, 2026) that finds no verified score, treats any number attached to his name as internet fiction and calls reports of a 100–120 result fabricated. Riot IQ sells tests, so its conclusion is a useful absence finding rather than a neutral one; ours matches it after checking the National Archives, Graceland, the GRAMMY and Rock Hall pages. The wider pattern is laid out in where celebrity IQ numbers come from.

Did Elvis Presley take an IQ test? The nearest thing on record is the testing every inductee went through. He was inducted into the Army on March 24, 1958, and the Encyclopedia of Arkansas says he spent two days at Fort Chaffee on Army tests and processing before basic training at Fort Hood, Texas. His Official Military Personnel File is held by the National Archives, which classes it as a Persons of Exceptional Prominence file open to the public, but the archive page shows no scores, and no biography or news report we opened prints one. Armed-forces aptitude results can be converted into rough IQ equivalents (how ASVAB and AFQT scores map to IQ), so a published result would matter. None has been published.

Why 70 does not fit the record. An IQ of 70 is two standard deviations below the average of 100 (what an IQ of 70 means). Against it stand an on-time high school graduation in June 1953 with B and C grades and an A in English, an Army record that reached sergeant, and a recording career built on learning songs by ear. The school reports that are described in detail, Graceland’s grade-by-grade account of Humes High, list letter grades and no IQ or test score. A school record is not a test and cannot rule a number out (how well IQ predicts school success), but a figure with no measurement behind it that sits badly with everything documented is not a finding. The error runs downward here, as it does on the Eminem page: the circulating number is lower than the record supports. Whether the question is “is Elvis Presley smart” or “was Elvis Presley intelligent”, the supportable answer is the estimated range on this page, not 70 and not 88.

Most widely cited70

Two websites state 70: kuechenfibel.de, a German question-and-answer site (“measured IQ of 70”, pointing to a Cicero article), and calendar-australia.com (school reports “show” 70, pointing to biogs.com). A figure of 88 appears in a few online posts that name no test. riotiq.com calls reports of a 100–120 result fabricated.

What we foundNo test result on record

No IQ test result for Elvis Presley has been published. riotiq.com (Dr. Russell T. Warne, March 17, 2026) says no verified score exists, notes that he went through aptitude screening at his 1958 Army induction and says the results were never released. Neither page that gives 70 names a test, an examiner or a date. Graceland’s school-years account, the National Archives page on his military personnel file and the Encyclopedia of Arkansas mention grades, induction and testing, but none prints a score.

The 88 sits 17 points below the bottom of the range and the 70 sits 35 below it; neither has a test behind it. A 100–120 band would overlap the range, but riotiq.com says that claim is fabricated too. Every circulating number is unsourced, and the low ones point lower than the record does.

Questions

Elvis Presley — frequently asked

What is Elvis Presley’s IQ?

No test result has ever been published, so Elvis Presley’s IQ is not known. The “IQ 70” on two websites names no test, and “IQ 88” traces to no record. From his documented record we estimate an IQ level of 105–125, which is an inference, not a score.

Did Elvis Presley take an IQ test?

No published IQ test exists. He went through two days of Army tests and processing at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, after his March 24, 1958 induction, but the results were never released, and no source we opened says an IQ was calculated from them.

Where do “Elvis Presley IQ 88” and “Elvis Presley IQ 70” come from?

The 70 appears on kuechenfibel.de, a German FAQ site, as a “measured IQ”, and on calendar-australia.com as the result of “school reports”; neither names a test or a date. The 88 appears in online posts that name no test. Neither number is a documented test result.

Was Elvis Presley intelligent?

The record shows a capable, fast-learning musician, not a measured IQ. He learned guitar and piano without reading music, played rhythm guitar on most of his Sun recordings, and graduated on time with mostly B’s and C’s. Whether Elvis Presley was smart in the IQ sense cannot be scored.

What were Elvis Presley’s grades at Humes High School?

Graceland’s account lists a C in music, arithmetic and science and an A in language in eighth grade, mostly B’s in ninth, B’s and C’s in tenth with an A in English and an F in typing, and mostly C’s in eleventh. He graduated on June 3, 1953.

How does Elvis Presley’s estimated IQ compare with John Lennon’s?

Elvis Presley’s estimated range of 105–125 overlaps John Lennon’s 108–120, which is also inferred from a school record, and sits just below Michael Jackson’s 110–130. All three are estimates from documented achievement, and none is a test score.

Do Elvis Presley’s Grammys and Hall of Fame induction show his IQ?

No. His three GRAMMY wins, the 1971 Lifetime Achievement Award and the 1986 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction document exceptional achievement as a performer, but they are not cognitive measurements. They anchor the estimated range; they do not prove a score.

How does my IQ compare with Elvis Presley?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other musicians profiles, starting with Brian May.
