Figures from 135 to 225 circulate for Oppenheimer, with 165 the most repeated. None of them is a test result. The academic record underneath is unusually well documented, and it is more specific than any of the numbers.
An academic record establishes that someone performed at a level, not that they would score at one. Oppenheimer’s own contemporaries described him as brilliant but not the strongest calculator in the room — Bethe and Fermi are the usual comparisons — which is exactly the kind of distinction a single number erases.

Find out in 30 minutes →J. Robert Oppenheimer was born in New York in 1904 and went to Harvard in 1922, taking a chemistry degree summa cum laude in three years. He spent an unhappy year at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge before moving to Göttingen, where he took his doctorate under Max Born in 1927.
He built the American school of theoretical physics across joint appointments at Berkeley and Caltech through the 1930s, and in 1943 was appointed director of the Los Alamos Laboratory. He was thirty-nine, had never run anything larger than a research group, and the appointment was considered a risk.
After the war he directed the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and chaired the General Advisory Committee to the Atomic Energy Commission. His security clearance was revoked after a hearing in 1954; the Department of Energy vacated that decision in 2022, fifty-five years after his death.
The estimate above rests on this record. Every entry here is a matter of public fact, which is more than can be said for the number itself.
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.
The Oppenheimer numbers grew the way Tesla’s did, and for the same reason: a reputation for exceptional intelligence with no measurement attached to it invites one to be supplied. The 2023 film pushed search volume for the question up sharply, and the aggregator pages that answer it were written to meet that demand rather than to settle anything.
What makes the invented figure unnecessary here is that the documented record is genuinely remarkable and genuinely specific. A Harvard degree in three years and a Göttingen doctorate at twenty-three are checkable facts. So is the Born–Oppenheimer approximation, which working chemists still use. So is the 1939 black-hole paper, published the same day Germany invaded Poland and largely ignored for thirty years.
There is also a documented weakness, and it is more interesting than a score. Oppenheimer was a poor experimentalist — his time at the Cavendish under Thomson was miserable and unproductive, and the laboratory work did not suit him. He was also, by the accounts of people who worked with him, not the fastest analyst at Los Alamos. What he had was breadth and the ability to run a room. Neither of those is what an IQ test measures.

The most-repeated figure is 165, but 135 and 190 both circulate widely, and a 225 appears on aggregator pages that present it as the highest recorded IQ of the twentieth century.
Oppenheimer was never tested, and no result has ever been published. The 225 in particular has no traceable origin — it is not attached to a test, a scale or a date anywhere we could find. On a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 it would sit more than eight standard deviations out, in a region where tests have no items and no norms.
Ninety points of disagreement is not measurement error. It is the range you get when several people each invent a number to match the same reputation.

He read several, and learned enough Dutch in about six weeks to lecture in it at Leiden in 1928. He also read Sanskrit, which he studied at Berkeley.
Routine IQ testing was not part of the education he received, and the 1954 security hearing — which examined his life exhaustively — records none. The absence is well evidenced rather than merely assumed.
