Processing speed peaks in your twenties. Vocabulary and knowledge keep climbing into your sixties. A synthesis published in Intelligence puts overall psychological functioning at its highest between 55 and 60 — and your IQ score cannot tell you where you sit on any of those curves.
Ask when the human mind is at its best and you will be given a decade, usually somebody's twenties, usually with a note of resignation. The research does not support a single decade, and the reason is more interesting than the answer. Different mental abilities peak at different ages, some of them decades apart, and every headline figure is an average taken across curves that are pointing in opposite directions at the moment it is calculated.
The most widely reported recent attempt at a combined answer is a synthesis by Gilles Gignac of the University of Western Australia and Marcin Zajenkowski of the University of Warsaw, published in the journal Intelligence in 2025. Rather than run a new sample, they collected published age curves across nine broad domains of psychological functioning — conventional cognitive abilities, the Big Five personality traits, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, moral reasoning, resistance to cognitive biases, cognitive flexibility, cognitive empathy, and motivation for complex problem-solving — and asked what the composite looks like when they are put on the same axis.
The composite peaked between the ages of 55 and 60. Decline set in from around 65 and became more pronounced after 75. Read as a description of one aggregate, that is a defensible summary. Read as "your mind peaks at 57", it is close to meaningless, because the aggregate is doing an enormous amount of work to conceal what is underneath it.
The oldest and best replicated distinction in this literature is between two families of ability. Fluid reasoning is what you use on a problem you have never seen — inferring a rule from examples, holding several constraints at once, spotting the structure in an unfamiliar pattern. Crystallised ability is what you have accumulated: vocabulary, general knowledge, the stock of procedures you already know. The first is early-peaking and the second is late-peaking, and almost everything confusing about ageing and intelligence follows from that one fact.
The twenties win on speed and the sixties win on knowledge. Which decade is the peak depends entirely on which question you were about to be asked.
This is why the same person can be getting measurably slower and measurably better at the same time, and why the everyday version of the question — am I past it? — has no useful answer without a task attached. It also explains a familiar pattern in test results: an older adult sitting a full battery often shows a wide gap between index scores, strong on vocabulary and comprehension, weaker on the timed and novel material. That profile is not a malfunction. It is the two curves showing up in one report, which is a large part of why a single total score is defensible and seriously incomplete at once.
Here is the part that surprises people, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. A modern IQ is a deviation score: your performance is compared with the performance of people in your own age band in the test's reference sample, and then expressed on a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation — the measure of how spread out results are — of 15. The age adjustment is built into the scoring table before you ever see a number.
The consequence is direct. If you scored 110 at 25 and 110 at 65, that does not mean your raw performance held steady for forty years. It means you stayed in the same position relative to your own age group, while the raw performance that position corresponds to changed underneath you. An IQ figure is a rank within a cohort, and a rank cannot detect a change that moved the whole cohort. Some of what looks like cognitive decline in a test score is not decline in the underlying ability at all. Timed tests punish slowing twice over: once for the speed itself, and once for the problems left unattempted at the end. Uncorrected hearing and vision drag scores down on tasks that were never meant to measure either. Medication, poor sleep and low mood all act on attention, and attention is the input to nearly everything else. Anyone interpreting an older adult's score without checking those has not measured ability, they have measured circumstances — the same argument that applies to everyday inputs on test day.
None of that requires a specialist to check. Take the score, name the scale and the age band it was normed against, and run it through the IQ percentile calculator to see the position it actually represents. Then look at the shape of the distribution before drawing any conclusion from a change, because a handful of points near the middle of the curve moves a percentile a long way and the same handful far out in the tail barely moves it at all. A drop of four points at 100 and a drop of four points at 135 are not the same event, and treating them as though they were is the most common mistake people make when reading their own results over time.

What makes it worth reporting is the structure it exposes: that "intelligence" is not one quantity moving along one line, and that the age at which any of it peaks is a fact about a specific ability measured a specific way in a specific sample. The same discipline that applies at the other end of the lifespan applies here — a coarse variable produces a confusing answer, whether the variable is hours of screen time or years of age.
The practical upshot is undramatic. Nobody has one peak. Speed goes early, knowledge goes late, judgement and conscientiousness go later still, and the composite happens to land in the late fifties because that is where the rising and falling curves cross. If you want to know what your own numbers say, the honest procedure is the same at every age: name the test, name the age norms, convert to a percentile, and read the range rather than the point.

Not usually, and that is a property of the scoring rather than of your brain. A modern IQ is a deviation score computed against people in your own age band, so holding a score of 110 from 25 to 65 means you have held your position relative to your peers. The raw performance behind that position does change with age; the age-normed score is built not to show it.
Crystallised abilities — vocabulary, general knowledge and comprehension — keep improving into the sixties. Emotional intelligence peaks around the mid-forties, financial literacy in the late sixties to early seventies, conscientiousness near 65 and emotional stability near 75. Resistance to some reasoning biases, including the sunk cost fallacy, also tends to improve with age.
Treat the shape of the curves as more reliable than the exact ages. Most of the underlying data are cross-sectional, comparing different people of different ages at one point in time, which cannot separate ageing from generational differences in schooling, nutrition and test familiarity. The sources were also drawn largely from Western industrialised populations.
