What is Eminem’s IQ?
A documented school record that points one way and a body of work that points the other.

EminemBorn 1972 · Hip-hop

Eminem failed the ninth grade three times and left school at seventeen. He also has one of the largest working vocabularies in recorded popular music. Both are true, and the gap between them is the whole story.

Eminem’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate120–140Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • Documented deliberate vocabulary acquisition — he has described studying dictionaries and keeping word lists to extend his rhyming range.
  • Corpus analyses of lyrics consistently place his unique-word count at or near the top of recorded popular music.
  • Writes multisyllabic and internal rhyme schemes of a complexity that is used as a teaching example in prosody.
  • Set against a documented school record of repeated ninth-grade failure and withdrawal at seventeen.

This range is unusually wide because the evidence is unusually split. Exceptional verbal facility is well documented; nothing at all is documented about the abilities most IQ tests spend the majority of their items measuring.

What an IQ of 120–140 actually means

Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.

Background

Who Eminem is

Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born in St Joseph, Missouri, in 1972 and grew up largely in Detroit, moving frequently between his mother’s homes. He began competing in local rap battles as a teenager, an environment that rewards fast, structured verbal improvisation under pressure.

His second album, The Slim Shady LP (1999), was produced by Dr. Dre and won a Grammy. The Marshall Mathers LP followed in 2000 and became one of the fastest-selling albums in American history. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2003 for “Lose Yourself”, the first rap song to receive it.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. He has spoken publicly and repeatedly about the deliberate, technical way he constructs rhyme schemes, which is the part of his work most relevant to this page.

Where it came from

Where the 112 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

3Times he failed the ninth grade

Nearly every page in this section documents a number being inflated. This one documents the opposite, and it is worth pausing on, because the mechanism is identical. Someone reasoned backwards from a known fact to a plausible-sounding score, and the score then circulated as though it had been measured.

The known fact is real. He failed the ninth grade three times and did not finish school. But repeated failure of a school year is a poor proxy for cognitive ability at the best of times, and his adolescence was spent moving between homes in Detroit and Missouri, in poverty. School records measure schooling.

Against that sits a documented and unusual piece of behaviour: he taught himself vocabulary from dictionaries, deliberately, to widen the set of words he could rhyme. Corpus studies of lyrics repeatedly place him at the top of popular music for unique word count. Whatever that is, it is not the profile of someone in the ordinary range on verbal ability.

The parallel case is Muhammad Ali, whose documented test result was low, and whose verbal performance was extraordinary by any standard. Both pages describe the same failure: a test that measured schooling being read as a measure of mind.

Eminem has never published a score and no test result has been documented by any biographer or journalist.

What we foundNo test result on record

Eminem has never published an IQ score and there is no record of him taking a test. The numbers in circulation appear to be reverse-engineered from the school record, which is real: he failed the ninth grade three times and left Lincoln High School in Warren, Michigan, at seventeen. That is a documented fact about schooling, not a measurement of ability.

A narrow band of modest numbers, all unsourced. Where most subjects here attract inflation, this one attracts deflation — and the direction of the error is itself a finding.

Questions

Eminem — frequently asked

What is Eminem’s IQ?

No test result exists. The figures around 110 to 120 that circulate online are unsourced and appear to be inferred from the fact that he did not finish school.

Did Eminem really fail the ninth grade three times?

Yes. That part of the record is well documented. He left Lincoln High School in Warren, Michigan, at seventeen without graduating.

Does failing school mean a low IQ?

No. School performance depends on attendance, stability, teaching and circumstance as much as on ability, and his adolescence involved frequent moves and poverty. A school record measures schooling.

What evidence is there that he is verbally gifted?

He has described teaching himself vocabulary from dictionaries to extend his rhyming range, and lyric-corpus analyses repeatedly place his unique-word count at the top of recorded popular music.

Why is the estimate on this page a wide range?

Because the evidence is split. Verbal ability is well documented and unusually high; nothing is documented about the spatial, numerical and reasoning abilities that make up most of an IQ test.

Which other musicians are profiled here?

Brian May, who holds a completed astrophysics doctorate, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Kanye West, whose circulating figure sits in a similar band to this one.

How does my IQ compare with Eminem?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other musicians profiles, starting with Brian May.
