Barack Hussein Obama II was born in Honolulu in 1961. He attended Occidental College, transferred to Columbia University and graduated in 1983 in political science, then worked as a community organiser in Chicago before entering Harvard Law School in 1988.
He was elected president of the Harvard Law Review in his second year and graduated magna cum laude in 1991. He taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago from 1992 to 2004 while serving in the Illinois State Senate from 1997.
He was elected to the US Senate in 2004 and to the presidency in 2008, serving two terms from 2009 to 2017. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 and has written three books, two of them before entering national office.

Where the 145 figure came from
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.
Presidential IQ figures are the most thoroughly documented fabrications in this section, which is why this category exists at all. In July 2001 an email began circulating attributing an IQ ranking of recent presidents to the “Lovenstein Institute” of Scranton, Pennsylvania. No such institute exists, and none of the researchers quoted in it exist either. The numbers were invented as a joke on a humour website.
It reached The Guardian on 19 July 2001 and Garry Trudeau’s Doonesbury on 26 August. Both published retractions. At least four newspapers reported it as fact. That episode predates Obama’s presidency — he is not in it — but it established the template every later list has followed: a plausible institutional name, a tidy ranking, and no methodology at all.
What makes Obama an unusually good test of the genre is that a real record exists and is easy to check. The Harvard Law Review presidency in 1990 was an election by the editors themselves after a long selection process, and it was widely reported at the time. The magna cum laude is on his degree. Anyone constructing an estimate had this material available and did not use it, which tells you the figures were not constructed from evidence.
Compare John F. Kennedy, where a documented school result of 119 exists and was displaced by larger invented numbers, and Donald Trump, where the circulating figures are similarly unsourced. In this category the direction of the error tracks the politics of the person quoting it, which is the clearest possible sign that no measurement is involved.

The circulating figures come from the same genre of unsourced presidential IQ lists that produced the 2001 Lovenstein hoax, in which a non-existent Pennsylvania institute was credited with ranking presidents and the numbers were simply made up.
