Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and graduated from Punahou School in 1979. He attended Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years, transferred to Columbia University in 1981 and earned a BA in political science in 1983. He moved to Chicago in 1985 to work for the Developing Communities Project, a community development program on the South Side, and enrolled at Harvard Law School in 1988.
He was elected president of the Harvard Law Review in February 1990 and graduated magna cum laude in 1991. According to the Review, its members are second- and third-year students chosen after a writing competition, so the presidency sits inside an already selective group. He taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004, as a Lecturer until 1996 and a Senior Lecturer from 1996 on.
He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996, took his seat in January 1997 and served until 2004, and was elected to the US Senate in November 2004. He resigned that seat on November 16, 2008, twelve days after winning the presidential election on November 4, 2008, and was inaugurated as the 44th president on January 20, 2009; he served until 2017. He accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on December 10, 2009, a documented honor.
His books are Dreams from My Father (1995), The Audacity of Hope (2006), Of Thee I Sing (2010) and A Promised Land (2020). Where the 145 figure came from
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.
Every Obama IQ score online is an estimate, and none of the pages that print one names a test. 24/7 Wall St. (February 14, 2025) lists 130–140 and describes its own estimate ranges as admittedly scientifically questionable. Brain Manager (November 6, 2024) gives 130–145 and puts a flat 145 in a ranking table. Riot IQ (July 8, 2026) estimates the high 130s and says no score has ever been disclosed. Two other pages, Brain Manager’s Obama article (October 19, 2025) and GeekExtreme (July 29, 2026), credit an estimate of about 140 to the psychologist Dean Keith Simonton. Simonton’s 2006 paper does not rate Obama. “Presidential IQ, Openness, Intellectual Brilliance, and Leadership,” in Political Psychology, estimated IQ for 42 presidents from George Washington to George W. Bush from published assessments; its Table 1 ends with Bush, and Obama’s name does not appear in the paper. A figure attributed to that study for Obama has no source in it.
Presidential IQ lists also have a documented fabrication at their root. In July 2001 an email credited a “Lovenstein Institute” of Scranton, Pennsylvania with ranking twelve presidents, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush. The institute is not real. The email began as a joke on a humor website called linkydinky.com, The Guardian reported it in its Diary column on July 19, 2001, and The Guardian and Doonesbury later published retractions. Obama is not in that list, which ended with Bush, but it set the template later lists copy: a plausible institutional name, a tidy ranking and no method.
What makes Obama a clean test of the genre is that a real record exists and is easy to check. The Harvard Law Review elected him its president in February 1990, and the Obama Presidential Library records his Columbia BA in 1983 and his magna cum laude in 1991. No biography or institutional page gives an IQ, SAT or LSAT score, so anyone building a figure had documented achievement available and printed a number with no method. Compare John F. Kennedy, where a documented school result of 119 exists and the Lovenstein list printed 174 instead, and Bill Clinton, whose published estimates in Simonton’s paper rest on assessments of his record rather than on a test. Opinions about any president’s intelligence, favorable or not, are not test results.
