What is Erling Haaland’s IQ?
Is Erling Haaland smart? What exists is a scoring record and research on footballers’ minds — not an IQ score for him.

No IQ test result has ever been published for Erling Haaland, and the 100–145 spread attributed to celebrity-IQ sites names no test and no source. What is documented is a record 36 Premier League goals in 2022–23 and a career of elite decision-making: football IQ in the coaching sense, not an Erling Haaland IQ score.

What the estimate rests on
  • A 2012 PLOS ONE study (Vestberg et al., Karolinska Institutet and Örebro University) gave 57 Swedish players executive-function tasks; top-division players were in the best 5% of the population on design fluency, and the score predicted goals and assists counted from January 2008 to May 2010. It measured executive function, not IQ, and Haaland was not a participant.
  • Research on “football IQ” measures behavior, not intelligence: Jordet et al. (Frontiers in Psychology, 2020) found that players who scanned the pitch more often had a slightly higher probability of completing a pass, and GiveMeSport (August 30, 2022) reported a thread by Jordet, of the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, analyzing Haaland’s scanning, saying data suggest he scans far more often than average.
  • Documented elite output: a record 36 Premier League goals in 35 appearances in 2022–23, Premier League Golden Boots in 2022–23, 2023–24 and 2025–26, the Champions League in City’s 2022–23 treble, and second place in the 2023 Ballon d’Or.
  • No school, degree, exam or standardized-test result has been published; the biographies we opened (English and Norwegian Wikipedia, Store norske leksikon) are silent on his education, so there is no test or academic record to anchor the range.

This range matches the band used here for Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar because the evidence shows exceptional, sport-specific skill and says nothing direct about general cognitive ability. The research is about other players, a scoring record is not an intelligence test, and with no test at all the range is an inference that could be wrong in either direction.

Background

Who Erling Haaland is

Erling Braut Haaland was born on July 21, 2000, in Leeds, England, and moved with his family to Bryne, Norway, in 2004, at age three. He came through Bryne’s youth academy, also took part in handball, golf and athletics as a child, and in May 2016, aged 15, made his first start for Bryne’s senior team. Molde announced his signing on February 1, 2017, when he was 16, and he played there under Ole Gunnar Solskjær; his Eliteserien debut came as a substitute against Sarpsborg 08 on June 4 that year.

Red Bull Salzburg announced his signing on August 19, 2018, and he joined on January 1, 2019, winning the Austrian Bundesliga and Austrian Cup in 2018–19. At the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup he scored nine goals in a 12–0 win over Honduras on May 30, 2019, his entire tournament total and enough for the Golden Boot. That September he scored a first-half hat-trick in a 6–2 Champions League win over Genk. Borussia Dortmund confirmed his signing on December 29, 2019; he made his debut on January 18, 2020, away at Augsburg, and scored 62 goals in 67 appearances through 2022, winning the DFB-Pokal in 2020–21.

Manchester City announced the signing on May 10, 2022, and he joined on July 1, 2022. In 2022–23 he scored 36 Premier League goals in 35 appearances, a record for a single Premier League season, and won the Premier League Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe. His 12 goals made him the Champions League’s top scorer that season, and City won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League, a treble completed by a 1–0 win over Inter Milan in Istanbul on June 10, 2023. On October 30, 2023, he finished second to Lionel Messi in the Ballon d’Or voting.

Haaland added Premier League Golden Boots in 2023–24 and 2025–26, finishing the latter season with 27 goals, and City won the FA Cup and the EFL Cup in 2025–26. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup he scored seven goals and Norway reached the quarter-finals, the furthest the country has advanced at a World Cup, before losing 2–1 to England after extra time at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on July 11, 2026. As of October 2026 he plays for Manchester City.

Where it came from

Where the 100–145 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Erling Haaland with slicked-back hair smiling in a white number 9 shirt in June 2026

No Erling Haaland IQ score has been published, and the one page we found that discusses the number says so. An article on riotiq.com dated July 14, 2026, from an IQ-testing company, reports that figures on celebrity-IQ aggregator sites run from 100 to 145 “depending on the source”, names none of those sites, and states that no verified, publicly documented score exists for him; it offers a behavioral inference, not a number. We found no aggregator page that prints a specific Haaland figure, so the 100–145 spread is second-hand at best. The words “Erling Haaland low IQ” also appear as a search suggestion; that is a meme, and a meme is not a result. Opinions about anyone’s intelligence, flattering or insulting, are not test results. How celebrity IQ numbers are made explains why unsourced figures like these multiply.

What people usually mean by Erling Haaland’s football IQ is a different thing from an IQ score. “Football IQ” is a fan and coaching phrase for reading the game: positioning, timing a run, deciding where to look. Research can measure pieces of it. In a 2020 Frontiers in Psychology study, Geir Jordet of the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences and colleagues filmed 27 male players from one English Premier League club across 21 home games in 2017/18 and counted “scans”, head movements that turn the eyes away from the ball. More scanning went with a higher probability of completing a pass, though the effect was small. In August 2022 GiveMeSport reported on a thread by Jordet analyzing Haaland’s scanning; the article says data suggest he scans far more often than average and prints no figures. That is a measure of attention habits on the pitch, not of intelligence, and Haaland, then playing in Norway, was not in the 2020 sample.

The study most often cited on footballers’ minds is Vestberg et al., published in PLOS ONE on April 4, 2012, by researchers at Karolinska Institutet and Örebro University. It gave 57 Swedish players, men and women from the highest national leagues and a lower division, the D-KEFS executive-function tasks (design fluency, color-word interference, trail making). Top-division players were in the best 5% of the population on design fluency, and the score predicted goals and assists counted from January 2008 to May 2010. The authors describe these executive functions as correlating with each other but less with general IQ, so the paper measured executive function, which is not the same thing as IQ. It did not test Haaland, who was a child of six or seven when the tests were given in 2007. The same study anchors Lionel Messi’s profile on this site, and the same caution applies: it describes a group of Swedish players, not any individual star.

The range here follows from that gap. Haaland’s documented record is exceptional, but it is a sport record, and his range matches those of Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar: 100–115, close to the average IQ test score of 100, because outstanding decision-making inside one sport does not convert into a general-ability number. On this site, sourced records almost always support a lower range than the circulating figure, and here the top of the 100–145 spread has nothing under it. Anyone curious about their own number can take a timed test such as the IQ Metrics test; no goals record substitutes for one.

The evidence

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for Erling Haaland, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited100–145

A 100–145 spread for “Erling Haaland IQ” is attributed to celebrity-IQ aggregator sites in an article on riotiq.com dated July 14, 2026; the article names none of those sites. “Erling Haaland low IQ” also appears as a search suggestion, which is a meme, not a figure.

What we foundNo test result and no named source for any number

There is no published IQ test result for Erling Haaland. We looked for his name with “IQ”, “IQ score” and “IQ test”, in English and Norwegian, and opened the Riot IQ article (July 14, 2026), English and Norwegian Wikipedia, Store norske leksikon and football-psychology coverage. The Riot IQ article says no verified, publicly documented score exists and offers an inference, not a number. No aggregator page we found prints a specific Haaland figure, and no biography mentions a school, exam or degree record.

Also published elsewhere
100115145

A 45-point spread, three standard deviations from end to end, with no test behind either end, is what numbers guessed from reputation look like. The documented record supports the lower half: elite sport-specific skill sits inside the range of accomplished professionals, and the top of the spread would need a test result that does not exist.

Questions

Erling Haaland — frequently asked

What is Erling Haaland’s IQ?

Erling Haaland’s IQ has never been published: no test result exists, and the 100–145 spread attributed to celebrity-IQ sites names no source. This page infers a range of 100–115 from his documented career, which is a sport-specific inference, not a measured score.

Did Erling Haaland take an IQ test?

No IQ test, school intelligence test or cognitive screening result for Haaland has been published, and none of the biographies we opened mentions one. Any number attached to “Erling Haaland IQ score” searches is an estimate or a guess, not a result.

Is Erling Haaland smart?

He is plainly skilled at reading play: a record 36 Premier League goals in 2022–23, three Premier League Golden Boots and second place in the 2023 Ballon d’Or. That is evidence of elite sport-specific skill, not an intelligence test, and no academic or test record exists to say more about general ability.

Does Erling Haaland have a low IQ?

No source shows that. No IQ test result for Haaland, low or high, has been published, so “low IQ” is an opinion or a meme, not a finding. Opinions about someone’s intelligence, positive or negative, are not test results.

What is Erling Haaland’s “football IQ”, and is it the same as IQ?

“Football IQ” is a fan and coaching term for reading the game: positioning, timing runs, deciding where to look. It is not a score on an intelligence test. Research measures parts of it, such as how often players scan the pitch, which relates only modestly to pass completion (Jordet et al., 2020).

What does research on footballers’ minds say, and does it include Haaland?

The best-known study, Vestberg et al. (PLOS ONE, 2012), tested 57 Swedish players and found top-division players in the best 5% of the population on a design-fluency task of executive function, which predicted goals and assists. It measured executive function, not IQ, and Haaland was not a participant.

How does Erling Haaland’s estimated IQ compare with Messi’s or Ronaldo’s?

This site estimates 100–115 for Haaland, the same band as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. All four rest on documented elite performance rather than a test, so the matching range reflects the same evidence limits, not a ranking of their intelligence.

How does my IQ compare with Erling Haaland?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other athletes profiles, starting with Magnus Carlsen.
