What is Taylor Swift’s IQ?
A 160 that nobody has ever sourced.

Swift has one of the most exhaustively documented working lives in music, and not one line of it involves an IQ test. The 160 attached to her name was never measured, reported or claimed — it was simply written down.

Taylor Swift’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate120–135Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • Sole writer on every track of Speak Now (2010), and a writer or co-writer across essentially the whole catalogue — a sustained body of work under her own name rather than one achievement.
  • Four Grammy Awards for Album of the Year — Fearless, 1989, folklore and Midnights — which is more than any other artist has won.
  • A six-year campaign to regain her master recordings, completed on 30 May 2025 when she bought them from Shamrock Capital, having re-recorded the catalogue in the interim to devalue the originals.
  • Completed secondary education at Aaron Academy in 2008, having left Hendersonville High School to accommodate touring. There is no tertiary record; the doctorate she holds is honorary.

None of this is a cognitive measurement. Songwriting, negotiation and sustained commercial judgement are evidence of something real, but they are not what an IQ test scores, and the range above is wide because the inference is long.

What an IQ of 120–135 actually means

Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.

Background

Who Taylor Swift is

Taylor Swift was born in West Reading, Pennsylvania in 1989 and moved to Nashville at fourteen to pursue a recording contract. She signed to Big Machine Records and released her first album in 2006.

She has written or co-written her catalogue throughout, and wrote Speak Now alone. Her four Album of the Year Grammys are a record no other artist holds. The Eras Tour, staged across 2023 and 2024, became the highest-grossing concert tour ever mounted.

In 2019 her back catalogue was sold along with Big Machine without her participation. She responded by re-recording the albums as Taylor’s Version releases, and in May 2025 bought the original masters outright from Shamrock Capital, which had acquired them in 2020.

Where it came from

Where the 160 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Taylor Swift at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards
4Album of the Year Grammys, a record

This page is worth reading beside Shakira, the other modern musician profiled here with no test on record. Shakira at least has a documented academic thread to argue from. Swift has none, and the number attached to her is the larger of the two.

What makes the case unusual is how much genuine documentation exists and how little of it anyone uses. Swift is among the most closely covered public figures alive. Her contracts, her writing credits, her masters dispute and her touring finances are all matters of public record. None of it has ever produced an IQ figure, because none of it is an IQ test.

The honorary doctorate is probably where the number gets its air of respectability. NYU awarded her a Doctor of Fine Arts on 18 May 2022 and she gave the commencement address at Yankee Stadium. An honorary degree is a tribute, not a qualification, and involves no examination — but it puts the word doctor beside her name, and on aggregator pages that is often enough.

How we read a number
AbsenceNo published IQ test result

Searched: contemporary profiles, biographies and interview archives. No IQ figure has been reported by any journalist, and Swift has never claimed one. This absence is the strongest statement this page can make.

The four wins are checkable against the Recording Academy’s own artist record, which is why they are used here in place of a test score.

160 is the figure that circulates most widely, usually with no source attached at all. A second cluster of sites gives 136.

What we foundNo test, no report, and no claim by Swift

Swift has never claimed an IQ score, and no journalist or biographer has reported one. That is unusual even here: most invented figures can at least be traced to a hoax table, a self-report or a misread news story. This one appears to have been written straight onto aggregator pages and copied outward. There is nothing underneath it to check.

Twenty-four points between the two figures published most often, with no method attached to either. As everywhere else in this section, the existence of a second number is the clue about how the first was arrived at.

Questions

Taylor Swift — frequently asked

What is Taylor Swift’s IQ?

There is no published figure. Swift has never taken a publicly reported IQ test and has never claimed a score. The 160 that circulates online has no source behind it.

Where does the 160 come from?

No traceable origin. Unlike most numbers on this site it cannot be tied to a hoax, a self-report or a misreported story — it appears to have been written directly onto celebrity IQ pages and copied from there.

Does Taylor Swift have a degree?

No. She completed secondary school at Aaron Academy in 2008 and did not attend university. The doctorate from NYU, awarded in 2022, is honorary and involves no examination.

Does writing her own songs indicate a high IQ?

It indicates sustained skill in a demanding craft. It is not an IQ measurement, and the two should not be conflated — which is exactly the substitution this page exists to flag.

Is 120 to 135 an insult?

No. That band runs from roughly the 91st to the 99th percentile. It is our honest reading of an achievement record, and it is stated as a range precisely because no measurement exists to narrow it.

Which other musicians are profiled here?

Brian May, who holds a real doctorate in astrophysics, Mozart, estimated by Cox’s 1926 method, and Shakira, whose case most closely resembles this one.

How does my IQ compare with Taylor Swift?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other musicians profiles, starting with Brian May.
