What is Ray Dalio’s IQ?
A finance major who reached Harvard Business School and built Bridgewater: a long paper trail, but no IQ test behind it.

Ray Dalio’s IQ has never been published, and we found no page that prints an IQ score for him. What is documented is a finance degree from C.W. Post in 1971, a Harvard Business School MBA in 1973 and Bridgewater Associates, founded in 1975. This site’s estimated IQ for him is 130–145, inferred from that record, not from a test.
Ray Dalio’s estimated IQ
- Graduated from C.W. Post College of Long Island University in 1971 with a finance major, then received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1973, according to Bridgewater’s founder page and Wikipedia.
- Bridgewater’s own page says he barely got into C.W. Post but graduated at the top of his class. That is a self-reported account, and the sources we read include no transcript.
- Founded Bridgewater Associates in 1975 from a two-bedroom apartment in New York City; Wikipedia says it became the world’s largest hedge fund in 2005.
- Named to the Time 100 list in 2012, per Bridgewater’s page and Wikipedia; Bridgewater says Fortune called the firm the fifth “most important private company in the US” in 2016.
- Author of Principles: Life & Work (Simon & Schuster, 2017), Principles for Navigating Big Debt Crises (2018) and Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order (2021), per Wikipedia.
No test result exists, and the sources we read list no degree beyond the MBA. A founder’s results reflect judgment, persistence, timing and a large team at least as much as reasoning-test ability, and a firm’s record is not one person’s. The range is wide and could be too high or too low.

What an IQ of 130–145 actually means
Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.
| Score range | Classification | Share of people | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 – 114 | Average | ~68% | The range most people fall into. |
| 115 – 129 | Above average | ~13.6% | Roughly one person in seven. |
| 130 – 144 | Gifted | ~2% | The threshold most high-IQ societies use. |
| Above 144 | Highly gifted | ~0.1% | Figures above this range are extrapolated from the curve rather than measured. |
Percentages are approximate and describe a normal distribution. The same number means different things on tests with different standard deviations.
Thirty questions gives you a measured position on this exact scale — your score, your percentile and the ability breakdown behind it.

According to Wikipedia, Raymond Thomas Dalio was born in August 1949 in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York City; sources differ on the day. Bridgewater’s founder page says he barely got into C.W. Post, majored in finance and graduated at the top of his class in 1971. Wikipedia names the degree as a bachelor’s in finance from C.W. Post College of Long Island University. He then went straight to Harvard Business School and received an MBA in 1973.
Dalio founded Bridgewater Associates in 1975 from his two-bedroom apartment in New York City, according to the firm’s founder page. Wikipedia says it became the world’s largest hedge fund in 2005, and Bridgewater says Fortune called it the fifth “most important private company in the US” in 2016. Dalio stepped down as CEO in 2017.
His books apply the firm’s methods for general readers. Principles: Life & Work came out from Simon & Schuster in 2017, per Wikipedia, which also lists Principles for Navigating Big Debt Crises (2018), Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order (2021) and How Countries Go Broke: The Big Cycle (2025). Wikipedia adds that he practices transcendental meditation; for the research on that practice, see meditation and IQ.
Recognition in the sources we read is about influence and the firm, not intelligence. Time named him one of its 100 most influential people in 2012, according to both Bridgewater and Wikipedia, and Wikipedia adds that Bloomberg Markets listed him among its 50 Most Influential in 2011 and 2012. Forbes lists his age as 77 as of November 2026. None of these sources mentions an IQ test, and none gives him a score.

Why no figure circulates
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Ray Dalio’s IQ has never been published, and the pages we opened do not print an IQ score for him. With no circulating figure there is nothing to trace back to a source. How numbers like these start and spread for other famous people is covered in where celebrity IQ numbers come from.
Is Ray Dalio smart? The documented answer is a strong student and a durable founder, which is not a test result. Bridgewater’s founder page says he barely got into C.W. Post, majored in finance and graduated at the top of his class, then went to Harvard Business School. It also says he credits his results not to something unique about him but to a principled approach that anyone can follow. That is the firm’s account of its founder, not an audit.
A high number is possible here, but nothing documented requires one. On a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, an IQ near 135 is roughly the top 1%, and our range spans about the top 2% down to about the top 0.1%. Graduate admission and a long career fit a wide band of scores, and a business school’s entrance exam is not an IQ test either; see GMAT scores and IQ.
Beside other investors here, 130–145 puts Dalio below Warren Buffett (145–160) and Jim Simons (150–165), and level with Jamie Dimon (130–145). The gaps follow the paperwork each profile can cite, not a ranking of the people. Buffett’s profile rests on a completed Columbia master’s degree and decades of published results; Dalio’s rests on two degrees and a firm’s history. For the wider research, see the IQ of billionaires.
How we read a number →The firm’s own page. Gives the 1975 founding from a two-bedroom New York apartment, graduation in 1971, the Harvard MBA in 1973, Time 2012, Fortune 2016 and his 2017 step-down as CEO. Self-reported by the firm, and it never mentions IQ.
Orientation source. Birth date, Jackson Heights, bachelor’s degree in finance from C.W. Post College of Long Island University, books and years, transcendental meditation, Time 100 and Bloomberg Markets lists.
Second reading of the birth date and place: 8 August 1949, Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City. Says he studied at Long Island University and Harvard Business School.
Label “Ray Dalio”; the description identifies an American hedge fund manager; no date of death. Its date of birth is 1 August 1949, which conflicts with Wikipedia’s August 8, so the record gives the month only.
Page current to November 2, 2026. Age 77; education listed as Long Island University and Harvard Business School (MBA); says he stepped down as CEO in 2017.
Names Dalio among self-made billionaires in an article on wealth and intelligence. Gives no score or IQ figure for him.
Searched for “Ray Dalio IQ” and variants. No page stating a number was found, and neither Wikipedia nor Bridgewater’s founder page mentions IQ.
The sources behind our estimate
The figures that circulate for Ray Dalio, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.
No IQ number for Ray Dalio turned up, so there is no circulating figure to trace.
We found no published IQ test result for Ray Dalio and no page that prints a number for him. Searches for “Ray Dalio IQ” and several variants returned biographies and interviews, none with a score. The Wikipedia article we read does not mention IQ, and neither does Bridgewater’s founder page. A June 2, 2023 article by Giovanni Sala and Fernand Gobet at the University of Liverpool, on whether rich people are more intelligent, names Dalio among self-made billionaires but gives no score for him.
With no circulating figure there is nothing to set against the range. The 15-point width is the honest size of the uncertainty when the evidence is a degree record and a firm’s history. Any number found elsewhere is unsourced unless it names a test and a date.

Ray Dalio — frequently asked
What is Ray Dalio’s IQ?
No IQ test result for Ray Dalio has been published, and we found no page that prints a number for his IQ score. This site’s estimated range is 130–145, inferred from his finance degree, his 1973 Harvard Business School MBA and the Bridgewater Associates firm he founded in 1975. It is an inference, not a measurement.
Is there a Ray Dalio IQ score online?
Not on any page we found: none prints an IQ number for him, and neither Wikipedia nor Bridgewater’s founder page mentions IQ. Any number you see elsewhere is unsourced unless it names a test and a date.
Is Ray Dalio smart?
Ray Dalio’s documented record points to high ability, but it does not yield an IQ score. He earned a finance degree, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and founded a firm in 1975 that Wikipedia says became the world’s largest hedge fund in 2005. Those facts show achievement, not a test result.
Did Ray Dalio take an IQ test?
No published IQ test result exists for him. We found no record of one in the sources we read, and neither Wikipedia nor Bridgewater’s own founder page mentions IQ. He may have taken tests privately, but none has been made public, so any specific number is a guess.
What degrees does Ray Dalio hold?
A bachelor’s degree in finance from C.W. Post College of Long Island University, which Bridgewater’s founder page dates to 1971, and an MBA from Harvard Business School, awarded in 1973. The sources we read list no other degrees.
How does Ray Dalio’s estimated IQ compare with Warren Buffett’s?
This site’s range for Dalio is 130–145, below Warren Buffett’s 145–160. Both ranges are inferences from documented records, not test scores, and the gap reflects how much each record can document, not a ranking of the two men. Neither has a published IQ test result.
Does a high IQ explain Ray Dalio’s success?
No test shows that it does. Bridgewater’s founder page says he credits his results to a principled approach that anyone can follow, not to something unique about him. A founder’s results also depend on timing, teams and temperament, which no IQ test measures.
How does my IQ compare with Ray Dalio?
You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred.
