Newton is one of the few figures Cox’s 1926 study actually covered — which makes the gap between her method and the numbers online worth looking at.
Cox’s method infers from documented childhood and early-career achievement, and she reported more than one figure per person with her own reliability caveats. Sites quoting a single sharp number for Newton are quoting past all of that.

Find out in 30 minutes →Newton arrived at Cambridge as a subsizar — a student who earned his keep serving wealthier ones. Within eight years he held the Lucasian chair. The intervening period included the plague closure of 1665–66, spent at his family home in Lincolnshire, during which he did foundational work on calculus, the composition of light and gravitation.
He published little of it for decades. The Principia came in 1687, prompted largely by Edmond Halley. Newton then left research almost entirely, running the Royal Mint with enough rigour to see counterfeiters hanged, and presiding over the Royal Society until his death.
He also wrote more on alchemy and biblical chronology than on physics — a detail usually left out of the accounts that produce his IQ figure, and a useful reminder that historiometry sees only the part of a life that posterity chose to keep.

Cox derived roughly 170 from his documented achievement up to age seventeen, then corrected it upward to account for how little of any genius’s childhood record survives. That correction produced the 190.
So the famous figure is not a distortion of Cox — it is Cox, read from column 25 of her Table 12A. What the listicles drop is the scaffolding: that 170 was the reading and 190 the adjustment, that the adjustment exists precisely because the record is thin, and that Cox published reliabilities alongside her estimates because she did not treat them as precise.
The other problem is the record itself. Newton’s early years are sparsely documented, and historiometry infers heavily from documented childhood precocity. A method that rewards surviving paperwork will systematically misjudge anyone whose paperwork did not survive.

Newton died more than two centuries before intelligence testing existed. Every figure is a retrospective inference. Cox’s 1926 study reported ranges with stated reliabilities rather than single values — the confident number online is what survives after those caveats are discarded.

The story comes from Newton himself via his biographer William Stukeley, who recorded Newton recounting it late in life. The apple prompted a question; the theory took two more decades.
Accounts describe an unremarkable early school record that improved sharply in his teens. Historiometry leans heavily on exactly this kind of biographical detail, which is part of why its estimates are uncertain.
