James Woods’s IQ is not documented: no test result has been published as of November 2026, and the only figure is the 184 on the Stanford-Binet that Woods himself reports. The 180 on celebrity lists has no documented source, so this page estimates 135–150 from his reported SAT scores and his MIT record.

James Woods’ estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate135–150Test-anchored estimate (SAT-derived)
What the estimate rests on
  • A reported verbal SAT score of 800 and math score of 779, printed in a Card Player profile dated June 14, 2006; in a separate interview Woods says he had perfect college board scores.
  • Admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied political science (Course 17), served as president of the Dramashop theater group and left in 1969, one semester short of a degree.
  • SAT scores correlated .82 with a general-ability measure in one 917-person sample, strongly enough to support a range. The standard error of an IQ predicted from that correlation is still about nine points, so the result is a range and not a score.

SAT-derived estimates inherit every problem of the SAT: coaching, practice and testing conditions all move the score. Here the score is also reported rather than documented, and the two accounts differ on the math section, so the SAT figure is itself unverified. It anchors a range. It does not produce a score.

Background

Who James Woods is

James Woods was born on April 18, 1947 in Vernal, Utah, and grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island, where he graduated from Pilgrim High School in 1965. At MIT he studied political science, served as president of the Dramashop theater group and left in 1969, one semester short of a degree, to act. He has said he first planned to become an eye surgeon.

His feature film debut was The Visitors, which screened at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for Salvador (1986) and for Best Supporting Actor for Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), and he won Primetime Emmy Awards in 1987 for Promise and in 1989 for My Name Is Bill W. Other well-known credits include Once Upon a Time in America (1984) and Casino (1995).

Those awards show professional distinction, not test scores, so they do not move the range. The estimate rests on the one claim with a named test behind it, the SAT, and treats the 184 on the Stanford-Binet as an unverified statement until a score report appears. The site’s position is the same here as everywhere: use the document that exists, and say plainly when it does not reach as far as the claim.

Where it came from

Where the 180 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

James Woods photographed in 2015
MITAdmitted, left to act

James Woods’s IQ is not on record: as of November 2026 no test result has been published, and the only figure comes from Woods himself. In a Card Player profile dated June 14, 2006, he answered a question about 180 by saying it is 184, and he tells Route Magazine he scored 184 on the Stanford-Binet. Neither account gives a test date, an edition or an examiner, so the James Woods IQ test he describes cannot be checked.

The 180 on lists such as PokerListings names the same test as Woods’s 184: that player profile prints 180 as his Stanford-Binet result and an 800 verbal SAT, with no byline, date or source. For how figures like these pass from list to list, see where celebrity IQ numbers come from.

The SAT claim is better anchored. Card Player reports a perfect verbal score and 779 on math, while Woods tells Route he had perfect college board scores, so the two accounts differ on the math section, and no score report has been published. In a sample of 917 people, SAT scores correlated .82 with a general-ability measure (Frey and Detterman, 2004), which supports a range with a standard error near nine IQ points, not a single number.

The MIT record is confirmed by MIT’s own pages, and it is not a score. Woods studied political science, led the Dramashop theater group and left in 1969, one semester short of a degree. Admission weighs essays, recommendations and institutional priorities alongside test results, so it supports the range only as a sign of strong academic standing.

The evidence

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for James Woods, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited180

Woods is given an IQ of 180 or 184, together with MIT and a near-perfect SAT, in profiles such as those on PokerListings and Card Player. Woods himself puts the number at 184 and names the Stanford-Binet.

What we foundA reported SAT, a self-reported IQ

The only IQ figure comes from Woods’s own account, and no score report supports it. His reported SAT is a different measure: an achievement test with its own scale, related to IQ but not interchangeable, and converting between them is an approximation with error bars of about nine points. As of November 2026, no test date, edition or examiner has been identified for the 184.

Also published elsewhere
180184

The two variants are 180 and 184. The 184 is the number Woods gives in his own words (Card Player, June 14, 2006, and a Route Magazine interview); the 180 is the figure on lists such as PokerListings. Two numbers for the same test is a reason to ask for the score report, which would settle it.

Questions

James Woods — frequently asked

What is James Woods’s IQ?

No IQ test result has been published for James Woods as of November 2026. He says he scored 184 on the Stanford-Binet, but no score report, date or examiner has surfaced, and the 180 on celebrity lists has no documented source. This page estimates 135–150 from his reported SAT scores and his MIT record, which is an inference and not a measurement.

Did James Woods take an IQ test?

Woods says he did: in a Route Magazine interview he describes a 184 on the Stanford-Binet. No record of that James Woods IQ test has been published, so its date, edition and examiner are unknown. That matters because Stanford-Binet editions before 1960 reported a ratio IQ, while the fifth edition (2003) uses deviation scores with a top band of 145–160.

What is James Woods’s IQ score: 180 or 184?

Neither is documented, but 184 is the number Woods gives himself: when Card Player asked about 180 in a profile dated June 14, 2006, he said it is 184. The 180 appears on lists such as a PokerListings player profile, which attributes it to the Stanford-Binet without a byline or date. On the usual scale (mean 100, standard deviation 15), 184 would be 5.6 standard deviations above the mean, roughly one person in 90 million.

Is James Woods a genius, and how smart is he by the record?

Woods has no documented genius-level test result, but the record shows very high academic ability. He was admitted to MIT, has a reported perfect verbal SAT, and earned two Academy Award nominations and two Primetime Emmy Awards. Our 135–150 range, on the usual scale with a standard deviation of 15, runs from roughly the top 1 percent to about 1 person in 2,300. “Genius” is a label, not a test category; see what a genius IQ level means.

How does James Woods’s IQ level compare with other actors?

On this site’s estimates, Woods’s 135–150 range shares its floor with Natalie Portman (135–145) but reaches five points higher, overlaps Geena Davis (130–145, anchored on a Mensa qualification), and sits below Dolph Lundgren (140–155). Benedict Cumberbatch carries the same 180 on celebrity lists, against a range of 125–140. These compare ranges built from records, not test scores.

What was James Woods’s SAT score?

A Card Player profile dated June 14, 2006 reports a perfect verbal score and 779 on the math section. In a Route Magazine interview, Woods says he had perfect college board scores, so the two accounts differ on math. No score report has been published for either.

Is an SAT score the same as an IQ?

No. The SAT is an achievement test with its own scale, though it tracks general ability closely: in a 2004 Psychological Science study, Frey and Detterman found SAT scores correlated .82 with a general-ability measure from the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery in 917 participants. A correlation of .82 still leaves a standard error of about nine IQ points, which is why one SAT result supports a range and not one number. The method is explained in SAT score to IQ conversion.

Did James Woods go to MIT?

Yes. MIT’s admissions blog (January 10, 2007) says he studied Course 17, political science, served as president of the Dramashop theater group, and left one semester short of graduating to pursue acting. MIT News listed him as class of 1969 in October 1998.

Why does this page use his SAT rather than the 184 he reports?

The SAT claim has a named test, reported section scores and a published account (Card Player, 2006), while the 184 has no edition, date, examiner or score report. Both come from Woods’s own account, so neither is verified; the SAT is the one that can be matched to a normed test with a measured relationship to general ability. A score report for the 184 would prompt a new review of the range.

How does my IQ compare with James Woods?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other actors profiles, starting with Natalie Portman.
