Benedict Cumberbatchb. 1976 · Acting

No interview on record has Cumberbatch citing a personal IQ score. What he has done, more than almost any other actor working today, is play one famous real-world genius and one of fiction’s most famous detectives — and the number attached to his name online appears to be borrowed entirely from the roles.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate125–140Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • Educated at Harrow School before reading drama at the University of Manchester, then completing a postgraduate diploma in classical acting at LAMDA, a competitive conservatory course.
  • Has played Alan Turing, Sherlock Holmes, Thomas Edison and Doctor Strange — four characters whose public reputations rest specifically on exceptional intelligence — across four separate productions.
  • Received a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for The Imitation Game (2014), a role that required close study of Turing’s documented biography and working notes.

This range rests on competitive drama-school admission, not on any test result — Cumberbatch has never claimed one. The genuinely unusual fact here is not a number; it is how often his casting has put him inside the biography of people who do have one, most directly Alan Turing.

Background

Who Benedict Cumberbatch is

Benedict Cumberbatch was born in London in 1976 to actor parents, Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton. He attended Harrow School before studying drama at the University of Manchester, then completed a postgraduate acting diploma at LAMDA.

He built a stage and television career through the 2000s before international recognition arrived with the BBC series Sherlock in 2010. The Imitation Game, in 2014, earned him an Academy Award nomination for playing Alan Turing, and he has since become one of the most widely recognised actors associated on-screen with scientific and detective genius, including his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Where it came from

Where the 180 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Benedict Cumberbatch at a film premiere
4On-screen “geniuses” played, from Alan Turing to Sherlock Holmes

Most entries on this site inflate because a real achievement gets mistaken for a test result. Cumberbatch’s case is a step removed from that: the achievement itself is fictional, or belongs to someone else. He did not do the things that make Holmes or Turing “geniuses” — he was cast to portray people who did, or who were written to.

It is a genuinely unusual concentration of casting. Beyond Holmes and Turing, Cumberbatch has played Thomas Edison in The Current War (2017) and Doctor Strange, a fictional genius-surgeon-turned-sorcerer, across multiple Marvel films — four exceptional-intelligence roles for one actor is well outside the norm even among his peers.

None of that transfers. The 125–140 range on this page describes Benedict Cumberbatch, an actor with a selective drama-school education; the higher figure that circulates describes, more accurately, the characters listed on his filmography.

Most widely cited180

A figure around 180 appears on “smartest actors” lists, generally justified by reference to his most famous roles rather than to anything about Cumberbatch himself.

What we foundA reputation built almost entirely on casting

Cumberbatch has never published or referenced a personal IQ score. The character most responsible for the public association — Sherlock Holmes, whose own page on this site carries an estimate of 180–200 — is fictional. The next most responsible, Alan Turing, was real and did have an exceptional documented record, but it was Turing’s record, established decades before Cumberbatch was cast to portray it.

The lower two numbers reflect the actor’s own documented education. The 180 is closer to where this site places Sherlock Holmes himself — the character, not the actor who has played him since 2010.

Questions

Benedict Cumberbatch — frequently asked

What is Benedict Cumberbatch’s IQ?

No test result has ever been published. A figure around 180 circulates online, but it tracks closely with the estimate this site gives Sherlock Holmes — the character, not the actor.

Has Benedict Cumberbatch ever taken an IQ test?

There is no record of one in his available interviews or biographies.

Why is Benedict Cumberbatch associated with high intelligence?

Almost entirely through casting: he has played Alan Turing, Sherlock Holmes, Thomas Edison and Doctor Strange — four characters whose public reputations rest on exceptional intelligence.

Did Benedict Cumberbatch study science to prepare for The Imitation Game?

He has spoken in press interviews about researching Alan Turing’s biography and mannerisms for the role; this is preparation for a performance, not a personal test result.

What did Benedict Cumberbatch study at university?

Drama, at the University of Manchester, followed by a postgraduate diploma in classical acting at LAMDA.

How does Cumberbatch’s estimate compare with Alan Turing’s or Sherlock Holmes’s on this site?

Both are considerably higher — Turing on the strength of an independently documented real record, Holmes as a fictional character written to be exceptional. Cumberbatch’s own estimate reflects an actor’s education, not either of theirs.

How does my IQ compare with Benedict Cumberbatch?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other actors profiles, starting with Natalie Portman.
