What is LeBron James’s IQ?
Basketball IQ is a real thing. It is not an IQ.

James has a documented, verified and genuinely remarkable memory for basketball. Every number attached to his name is the result of that being renamed as something it is not.

LeBron James’s estimated IQ

IQ Metrics estimate105–120Domain performance (expert recall)
What the estimate rests on
  • Repeatedly demonstrated near-exact recall of game sequences under press-conference conditions, including a play-by-play reconstruction after Game 1 of the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals and a full listing of his own turnovers after Game 5, both later checked against the tape and found accurate.
  • Twenty-plus seasons of elite decision-making at the highest level of a fast, complex, adversarial game.
  • Became the NBA’s all-time leading regular-season scorer on 7 February 2023, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
  • Founded the I PROMISE School in Akron in 2018 in partnership with Akron Public Schools — an institutional undertaking, not a donation.

The recall is real and verified, but it is recall of meaningful basketball patterns, which is the textbook signature of trained domain expertise rather than general memory capacity. James went straight from high school to the NBA, so there is no academic record to triangulate against, and the band is wide accordingly.

Background

Who LeBron James is

LeBron James was born in Akron, Ohio in 1984 and was nationally known as a schoolboy player at St Vincent–St Mary High School. He was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003, at eighteen, without attending university.

He has won four NBA championships and four Most Valuable Player awards across spells with Cleveland, Miami and the Los Angeles Lakers. On 7 February 2023 he passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the league’s all-time leading regular-season scorer.

In 2018 his foundation opened the I PROMISE School in Akron, run in partnership with the city’s public school district rather than as a private academy — an unusual structure that placed the school inside the public system.

Where it came from

Where the 144 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

LeBron James playing for the Los Angeles Lakers
2023NBA all-time scoring record

This page has an unusually good piece of evidence at its centre, and it points somewhere other than where it is usually aimed. After Game 1 of the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals, asked what had gone wrong in the fourth quarter, James reconstructed the sequence possession by possession — who shot, who rebounded, who inbounded, which hand the layup finished with. Reporters checked it against the tape. It was right.

That is precisely the effect Chase and Simon documented in chess players in 1973. Experts reproduce meaningful configurations from their own domain almost perfectly, and random configurations no better than beginners. The advantage is not a bigger memory. It is a library of patterns built over decades, which lets an expert store a whole sequence as a few familiar units instead of forty separate facts.

Which means the recall is strong evidence of twenty years of basketball and weak evidence about anything else — and it is the only evidence any of the circulating figures rests on. Read this page alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, whose profile turns on the same mechanism measured in a laboratory rather than a press room, and alongside Garry Kasparov, where the domain in question happens to be reasoning itself.

One further note on direction. James entered the NBA straight from St Vincent–St Mary High School in 2003, so there is no college transcript, no admission test and no degree to weigh. The absence of an academic record is not evidence of a low score any more than the presence of one would be evidence of a high one. It simply removes the second line of evidence that most profiles here can draw on.

Aggregator pages typically place him between 130 and 150, with 144 the most repeated. Other sites give 113. Most cite his “basketball IQ” as the evidence.

What we foundNo test on record; the evidence cited is a different thing entirely

“Basketball IQ” is a term of art in sport, not a psychometric measure. It describes reading a play, anticipating rotations and choosing well under time pressure. James has as strong a claim to it as anyone who has played. It is measured by no instrument, is scored on no scale, and converts to no number — which has not stopped a dozen sites converting it to one.

Questions

LeBron James — frequently asked

What is LeBron James’s IQ?

There is no test result on record. Figures between 113 and 150 circulate, all inferred from stories about his memory. Our domain-based estimate is 105 to 120.

Does LeBron James have a photographic memory?

He has demonstrated verified, near-exact recall of game sequences. Research on expert cognition indicates this is a domain-specific pattern library rather than photographic memory in the general sense.

Is “basketball IQ” the same as IQ?

No. It is a sporting term for reading play and deciding well under pressure. It is measured by no instrument and converts to no number, though many sites convert it anyway.

How do we know his recall was accurate?

Reporters present at the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals checked his account against the game tape. The sequence he described, including who shot and who rebounded, matched.

Did LeBron James go to college?

No. He was drafted first overall in 2003 directly from St Vincent–St Mary High School, which is why there is no transcript or admission test to weigh here.

Why is his estimate lower than the chess players here?

Because chess ratings come from contests of reasoning against rated opponents, which overlaps with what IQ tests sample. Basketball expertise overlaps far less, however elite it is.

How does my IQ compare with LeBron James?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other athletes profiles, starting with Magnus Carlsen.
