What is Kaguya Shinomiya’s IQ?
Second every semester, by the manga’s own account — and no invented number has ever caught on for her either.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War gives Kaguya Shinomiya an explicit class rank but never a numeric IQ — and neither, unusually, has fandom invented one. She and her rival, student council president Miyuki Shirogane, are this site’s first fictional “genius” pairing with no circulating figure to audit on either side.
Kaguya Shinomiya’s estimated IQ
- Ranked second in her year at Shuchiin Academy — an elite school the story frames as grooming Japan’s future leaders — every semester since she enrolled, consistently finishing behind fellow student council officer Miyuki Shirogane.
- The manga’s entire structural premise runs on her elaborate, multi-step psychological schemes against Shirogane, in which she repeatedly matches or outmanoeuvres a character the story separately establishes as the school’s own top-ranked student.
- Raised apart from other children and privately tutored rather than sent to ordinary school, groomed from early childhood as a daughter of the Shinomiya business empire — an upbringing outside commentary on the series ties directly to her calculating adult persona.
- Holds the student council vice presidency opposite Shirogane’s presidency for the run of the series, the seat from which the plot’s entire cast of schemes is organised.
No chapter, episode, or interview with creator Aka Akasaka assigns Kaguya Shinomiya a numeric IQ — and, unlike several other fictional “geniuses” profiled on this site, fandom does not appear to have invented one either. This range is this site’s own inference from her stated academic rank and her role in the story’s central genius rivalry, on the same character-analysis basis used for other fictional profiles here — not a measurement of any kind, because neither the source material nor its fandom supplies one.

What an IQ of 150–170 actually means
Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.
| Score range | Classification | Share of people | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 – 114 | Average | ~68% | The range most people fall into. |
| 115 – 129 | Above average | ~13.6% | Roughly one person in seven. |
| 130 – 144 | Gifted | ~2% | The threshold most high-IQ societies use. |
| Above 144 | Highly gifted | ~0.1% | Figures above this range are extrapolated from the curve rather than measured. |
Percentages are approximate and describe a normal distribution. The same number means different things on tests with different standard deviations.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is written and illustrated by Aka Akasaka. It began serialization in Shueisha’s Miracle Jump in May 2015, moved to the higher-circulation Weekly Young Jump in March 2016, and concluded there in November 2022 after 281 chapters collected into 28 volumes. An anime adaptation by A-1 Pictures followed: three television seasons between January 2019 and 2022, an OVA, and the film Kaguya-sama: Love Is War – The First Kiss That Never Ends in December 2022.
The story is set at Shuchiin Academy, an elite private school the series frames as grooming Japan’s future leaders, and follows its student council: president Miyuki Shirogane and vice president Kaguya Shinomiya, introduced as the school’s two top students, with secretary Chika Fujiwara and treasurer Yu Ishigami rounding out the core cast. Neither council leader will confess romantic feelings for the other first, treating a confession as a loss of face — the running premise from which the manga builds its dozens of elaborate schemes.
Within that premise, the manga states Kaguya has ranked second in her year at Shuchiin every semester since she enrolled, always behind Shirogane. She is written as the youngest child of Gan’an Shinomiya, patriarch of the Shinomiya family, whose holdings the story describes as one of the largest business conglomerates in Japan. A family backstory revealed later in the series describes her as the daughter of an affair between her father and a woman who died weeks after her birth, and raised apart from other children with private tutors rather than an ordinary school, before enrolling at Shuchiin and joining its archery club.

Why no figure circulates
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Kaguya Shinomiya’s natural point of comparison is her co-lead and rival, Miyuki Shirogane — student council president to her vice president, and the reason she has never outranked him at Shuchiin Academy. The manga draws the contrast deliberately: Kaguya is the youngest child of a business dynasty, privately tutored from early childhood; Shirogane transferred in on scholarship as the school’s poorest student, with the lowest entrance scores of any transfer student, before studying his way to the top of Shuchiin’s own rankings and, by some character summaries, second place nationally on a mock exam. Two opposite paths to the same label — “genius” — sit at the centre of the whole series.
That pairing invites comparison with this site’s other fictional “genius rivalry,” Death Note’s L and Light Yagami — two characters that manga also declines to give a number, tying them instead at the top of a university entrance exam. What happened next differs: fandom filled the gap for L and Light anyway, with dueling invented figures (165–230 for Light, 190–250 for L, neither traceable past fan wikis). For Kaguya and Shirogane, on the research performed for this page, no equivalent number ever caught on, in English or Japanese fan spaces alike.
The one place the franchise engages the concept of IQ directly is off the page. Reporting on the series states that creator Aka Akasaka’s original working title was “IQ” — a pun on the Japanese aikyuu, “love-seeking” — before his editor judged the wordplay too oblique for new readers, and the title became Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai (“Kaguya Wants to Be Confessed To”) instead. The show that resulted is, in other words, named around the idea of intelligence without ever assigning either lead a number for it.

Confirms serialization history (Miracle Jump to Weekly Young Jump), anime season and film dates, Kaguya’s vice-presidency and archery-club membership, and her family background as revealed later in the story.
Corroborate her consistent second-place class rank “every semester since her first,” her student council role, and Miyuki Shirogane’s rival top rank.
Neither the manga, the anime, nor any official supplementary material assigns Kaguya Shinomiya a numeric IQ. Unlike several other fictional profiles on this site, no fan-invented figure appears to have caught on for her either.
The main Kaguya-sama Fandom wiki returned an HTTP 402 error on direct page load during this research; content confirmed via search-engine indexing rather than a full page read.
The only fan source found that rates her intelligence on any kind of scale; assigns a qualitative tier (“Gifted”) rather than a number.
Placed alongside this site’s other fictional “genius rival” pair; unlike that pair, no invented number circulates for either Kaguya Shinomiya or Miyuki Shirogane.
The sources behind our estimate
The figures that circulate for Kaguya Shinomiya, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.
Fan discussion around “smartest anime characters” regularly places Kaguya Shinomiya alongside this site’s other Death Note and Naruto entries — but unlike Shikamaru Nara, Light Yagami, L Lawliet, Edward Elric or Rick Sanchez, no specific IQ figure for her turned up anywhere searched, on fan wikis, quiz-aggregator sites, or social media, in English or Japanese.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War never assigns Kaguya Shinomiya a numeric IQ, and no invented figure for her appears to have caught on either. The IQ-quiz aggregator sites and fan-wiki “power” rankings that supply figures for Edward Elric, Light Yagami and L elsewhere on this site carry nothing for her. The one fan resource found that rates her intelligence on any kind of scale, the Character Stats and Profiles Wiki, assigns a qualitative tier — “Gifted” — rather than a number. The manga itself states only an ordinal class rank: second, every semester, never a score.
There is no spread to report. Every other fictional profile on this site carries some number to audit — a canon figure for Shikamaru Nara, competing fan estimates for the rest. As far as this research could establish, Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane both have none.

Kaguya Shinomiya — frequently asked
What is Kaguya Shinomiya’s IQ?
No figure is given anywhere in Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, and — unusually for a fictional “genius” character — no invented number appears to have caught on among fans either. The manga states only her class rank: second, every semester.
Is Kaguya Shinomiya smarter than Miyuki Shirogane?
The story never resolves this. Shirogane holds the school’s top exam rank and, by some character summaries, placed second nationally on a mock exam, but the manga’s entire plot is built from Kaguya matching or outmanoeuvring him at his own game.
What is Kaguya Shinomiya’s class rank in the story?
Second in her year at Shuchiin Academy, every semester since she enrolled — always behind fellow student council officer Miyuki Shirogane, per the manga and corroborating character summaries.
Was Kaguya-sama: Love Is War ever going to be called “IQ”?
According to reporting on the series, yes — creator Aka Akasaka has said his original working title played on the Japanese pun “aikyuu” (“love-seeking”), before his editor judged it too oblique for readers.
What is Kaguya Shinomiya’s family background?
She is written as the youngest child of Gan’an Shinomiya, head of the Shinomiya business empire, born from an affair the manga reveals later in the story. She grew up isolated from other children and privately tutored, rather than attending ordinary school, before enrolling at Shuchiin.
How does Kaguya Shinomiya compare to Death Note’s L and Light Yagami on this site?
All three are written as unnumbered geniuses in stories that never assign an IQ. The difference is what fandom did afterward: invented figures caught on for L (190–250) and Light (165–230), but not, as far as this audit found, for Kaguya or her rival Shirogane.
How does my IQ compare with Kaguya Shinomiya?
You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.
Where does this estimate come from?
From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other fictional profiles, starting with Sherlock Holmes.
