What is Pavel Durov’s IQ?
The searches ask for an IQ estimate; the record answers with a school medal, a red diploma, and nothing a test would call a score.

Pavel Durov’s IQ has never been published: no test result exists, and no page we opened gives him a number. What is documented is a 2001 silver medal from the Academic Gymnasium in St. Petersburg and a 2006 honors degree in English philology and translation, followed by VKontakte (2006) and, with his brother Nikolai, Telegram (2013).

Pavel Durov’s estimated IQ

What the estimate rests on
  • Graduated in 2001 from the St. Petersburg Academic Gymnasium with a silver medal, after entering an experimental class there in 1996.
  • Completed the English Philology and Translation program at St. Petersburg State University’s Faculty of Philology (2002–2006) with a red diploma, the Russian honors diploma; Russian-language biographies also report Russian Government and Presidential scholarships and three Potanin scholarships.
  • Launched VKontakte in 2006, the year he graduated, from a student forum begun during his university years; he served as its CEO until April 2014.
  • Created Telegram in 2013 with his older brother Nikolai, whom Telegram’s own FAQ credits with the technological side; as of October 2026 Durov is Telegram’s founder and CEO.

A school medal and an honors degree in languages are good-student signals, not measurements, and the technical side of both products is credited to his brother. No olympiad result for Pavel himself appears in any source we could open, so this Pavel Durov IQ estimate rests on school, degree and founder record alone and could sit several points either way.

Context

What an IQ of 130–145 actually means

Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.

Standard scale, mean 100, standard deviation 15
Score rangeClassificationShare of peopleWhat it indicates
85 – 114Average~68%The range most people fall into.
115 – 129Above average~13.6%Roughly one person in seven.
130 – 144Gifted~2%The threshold most high-IQ societies use.
Above 144Highly gifted~0.1%Figures above this range are extrapolated from the curve rather than measured.

Percentages are approximate and describe a normal distribution. The same number means different things on tests with different standard deviations.

Background

Who Pavel Durov is

Pavel Durov’s education is documented in Russian-language biographies, Kommersant among them, and in Wikipedia, and the sources agree on the outline. He was born on October 10, 1984, in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, and began primary school in Turin, Italy, before returning home. In 1996 he entered an experimental class at the Academic Gymnasium, the school affiliated with St. Petersburg State University, and in 2001 he finished it with a silver medal (Russian Wikipedia says “with distinction”). In 2002 he enrolled in the university’s Faculty of Philology to study English Philology and Translation, and in 2006 he graduated with a red diploma, the Russian honors diploma.

Russian-language profiles add that he held Russian Government and Presidential scholarships, was a three-time winner of the Potanin scholarship, and won olympiads in informatics, linguistics and design (Russian Wikipedia, Rambler in 2017, peterburg2.ru). None of them names an olympiad, a level or a year, so we treat the olympiad wins as reported, not verified. A philology degree is a language credential; where verbal and non-verbal scores diverge, a record like this speaks mostly to verbal ability.

VKontakte grew out of a student forum at the university and launched in fall 2006: English Wikipedia dates the beta to September 2006, while Russian sources date the first version to October 2006. Durov was its CEO, with Nikolai developing the site, until April 21, 2014. Telegram followed in 2013: the first iOS client debuted on August 14, 2013, the Android alpha on October 20, 2013, and Telegram’s FAQ says Nikolai Durov’s input is technological, including the custom MTProto data protocol. As of October 2026 Pavel Durov is Telegram’s founder and, per Wikipedia, its CEO.

Among the founders in this section, Durov’s path is closest to Mark Zuckerberg’s: both started a social network at university, and Zuckerberg’s Thefacebook launched on February 4, 2004. Zuckerberg left Harvard in his second year, while Durov graduated with honors, and the two ranges here, 135–145 and 130–145, overlap almost entirely. Against Sergey Brin (a University of Maryland B.S. in 1993 with honors in computer science and high honors in mathematics, then a Stanford Ph.D. program left for Google) and Linus Torvalds (a University of Helsinki master’s in computer science, 1996), Durov’s documented training is in languages rather than computing, which is why his range sits below theirs. Vitalik Buterin offers the sharpest contrast: Wikipedia records a bronze medal at the 2012 International Olympiad in Informatics, a contest result of the kind that has no counterpart in Pavel’s verified record. A score around 140 would fit the documented achievements, but the record cannot separate 130 from 145.

Where it came from

Why no figure circulates

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Pavel Durov seated with his arms crossed in a photograph from 2012

Pavel Durov IQ searches end without a number: Google suggests “pavel durov iq estimate” and “pavel durov iq reddit” for his name, yet none of the pages we opened gives a score, a test or an examiner. English Wikipedia lists his degree and his companies and says nothing about an IQ test. The searches are a habit attached to a famous founder, not a trail leading to a result.

How smart is Pavel Durov, according to the pages that try to answer? The one that comes closest is the Russian biography site 24SMI, which calls him a programmer and businessman “belonging to the people with the highest IQ in the world” (our translation) and then gives no number, test, date or source. A second place where the letters IQ meet his name is a job listing: Telegram’s jobs page lists an Assistant to the CEO vacancy whose preferred qualifications begin with “high IQ score,” and the Russian site iphones.ru reported the vacancy on October 18, 2023. That is a screening criterion for an applicant. It says nothing about the person hiring.

The documented record that comes nearest to an IQ-style result in the Durov family is Nikolai’s, not Pavel’s. Competing as Nikolai Dourov or Durov, he appears in the International Olympiad in Informatics database with a gold medal in 1996 (9th of 220, 184 points, 92.00 percent) and silver medals in 1995, 1997 and 1998; the International Mathematical Olympiad’s official results list gold medals as “Nikolai Dourov” in 1996 (37 points), 1997 (39) and 1998 (39). None of that is evidence about his brother. Siblings resemble each other only in part, the same regression to the mean that pulls any extreme score back toward the average.

As elsewhere in this section, the sourced record points lower than the claim. “The highest IQ in the world” would place someone in a group so small that no school medal or degree can put a person there; the genius range on the IQ scale is defined by test items, not by founding companies. The evidence

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for Pavel Durov, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited—

No number circulates. Google’s autocomplete offers “pavel durov iq estimate” and “pavel durov iq reddit” for his name (checked October 5, 2026), but the pages behind those searches give no figure. The nearest thing to a claim is one sentence on the Russian celebrity-biography site 24SMI saying he belongs among “people with the highest IQ in the world” (our translation).

What we foundNo test, no number, no source

We found no IQ test result for Pavel Durov and no page that attaches a number to him. The 24SMI sentence names no test, score, date or source. Search results for “pavel durov iq” also surface a page on iq.wiki, a blockchain encyclopedia where “IQ” is a crypto token; its Durov article says nothing about intelligence. The only score that appears anywhere near his name is on Telegram’s own jobs page, where the Assistant to the CEO vacancy lists a “high IQ score” among its preferred qualifications — a criterion for an applicant, not a result for him.

130145

Only the two ends of our own range are on the board, because there is no circulating figure to set against them. A claim phrased as “the highest IQ in the world” implies a score at the very top of any scale; the sourced record supports a range that overlaps Mark Zuckerberg’s 135–145 in this section and stops well short of Sergey Brin’s 150–165.

Questions

Pavel Durov — frequently asked

What is Pavel Durov’s IQ?

No verified score exists: Pavel Durov has no published IQ test result, and we found no page that gives him a number. Our estimated range is 130–145, inferred from a 2001 school silver medal, a 2006 honors degree in English philology and the founding of VKontakte and Telegram. It is an estimate, not a measurement.

Did Pavel Durov take an IQ test?

There is no public record of one. No school, university, company or news source we opened reports a score, and Durov has not published one. The only IQ reference near Telegram is a job listing for an Assistant to the CEO that prefers applicants with a “high IQ score.”

Where does the Pavel Durov IQ estimate come from?

No estimate with a number surfaced. Google offers “pavel durov iq estimate” as a search, but the closest claim we found is a Russian biography site, 24SMI, saying he is among people with the highest IQ in the world, with no number, test, date or source. Another result, iq.wiki, is a crypto encyclopedia where IQ is a token.

How smart is Pavel Durov?

On the record he is a strong student and a founder: a 2001 silver medal from the St. Petersburg Academic Gymnasium, a 2006 red diploma in English philology and translation, VKontakte in 2006 and Telegram in 2013. That supports an estimated IQ level of 130–145, never a measured one.

What is Pavel Durov’s education?

Pavel Durov finished the St. Petersburg Academic Gymnasium in 2001 with a silver medal, then studied English Philology and Translation in the Faculty of Philology at St. Petersburg State University (2002–2006), graduating with a red, or honors, diploma. The sources we opened list no computer science or mathematics degree.

How does Pavel Durov’s estimated IQ compare with Mark Zuckerberg’s?

This section estimates Durov at 130–145 and Mark Zuckerberg at 135–145, so the ranges overlap almost entirely. Both started a social network at university, but Durov graduated with honors while Zuckerberg left Harvard in his second year. Both numbers are inferred from careers, not from test scores.

Does Nikolai Durov’s record say anything about Pavel Durov’s IQ?

No. Nikolai Durov’s gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (1996–1998) and in informatics (1996) are his own results. Siblings resemble each other only partly, so a brother’s contest record is not evidence about Pavel, and no comparable result for Pavel appears in the sources we opened.

How does my IQ compare with Pavel Durov?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other business & tech profiles, starting with Steve Jobs.
