Most political-IQ estimates on this site rest on legal training or oratory. Merkel’s is unusual for resting on a completed physics degree and a doctorate in quantum chemistry, earned years before she entered politics at all.
A completed doctorate demonstrates sustained subject mastery over years, which is real evidence — but it is evidence of expertise and diligence in one field, not a psychometric score, and her specific academic standing within that programme is not something we could independently verify.

She studied physics at Leipzig, then spent more than a decade as a researcher at the Academy of Sciences in East Berlin, publishing on quantum chemistry and completing her doctorate in 1986.
She entered politics only after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, joining the new party Democratic Awakening before it merged into the Christian Democratic Union. She rose quickly under Chancellor Helmut Kohl, serving as a cabinet minister through the 1990s, then took the CDU leadership in 2000 and became Chancellor in 2005.
Over sixteen years in office she managed the 2008–2012 financial and Eurozone crises, opened Germany’s borders to more than a million refugees in 2015 under the policy she summarised as “Wir schaffen das” (“we can manage this”), and led Germany’s initial pandemic response before leaving office at the end of 2021.

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.
“World leader IQ” lists are one of the more hoax-prone genres this site covers — Thomas Jefferson’s page documents a fabricated 2001 table of presidential scores that made it into print. Merkel’s case is different in kind: she is one of the few heads of government anywhere with an actual doctorate in a hard science, so a high number attached to her at least points at something real, even though the number itself is still unsourced.
That distinction matters. A physics degree and a completed quantum-chemistry doctorate are a genuine, checkable record of sustained technical achievement — the kind of credential this site treats as real evidence precisely because it is rare among political leaders, most of whose pages here rest on law degrees or oratory rather than research.
The nearest comparison on this site is Margaret Thatcher, the other head of government profiled here who trained as a scientist — Thatcher in chemistry at Oxford, working as a research chemist — before moving into law and politics. Both cases show a real science credential sitting underneath a political career, which most estimates of political figures cannot draw on.
