What is Anthony Hopkins’ IQ?
No score was ever published. The record is two Best Actor Oscars from six nominations, and a school career he describes as that of a “poor learner.”

Anthony Hopkins’s IQ has never been published, and none of the celebrity-IQ lists we opened prints a score for him. What is documented is training at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and RADA, two Best Actor Oscars (1992 and 2021) from six nominations, and a knighthood in 1993. This site’s estimated IQ level for him is 120–135, an inference from that record.
Anthony Hopkins’ estimated IQ
- Graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 1957 and, after National Service from 1958 to 1960, studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London from 1961 to 1963, according to Wikipedia; Wikidata also gives 1963 as the end of his RADA studies.
- Won the Academy Award for Best Actor twice, for The Silence of the Lambs at the 64th Academy Awards (March 30, 1992) and for The Father at the 93rd (April 25, 2021), by the Academy’s own ceremony pages.
- Four further nominations, also confirmed on the Academy’s ceremony pages: Best Actor for The Remains of the Day (66th Academy Awards, 1994) and Nixon (68th, 1996), and Best Supporting Actor for Amistad (70th, 1998) and The Two Popes (92nd, 2020), six in all.
- Appointed CBE in 1987 (Wikidata) and knighted in 1993 (Wikipedia), with the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2006 and the BAFTA Fellowship in 2008.
No test result exists. Drama-school places and acting awards are judged on audition and performance, not on reasoning tests, and Hopkins describes himself as a poor learner at school, so there is no academic result to anchor on. This estimated IQ range is a wide, soft inference from a performer’s record, not a measurement.

What an IQ of 120–135 actually means
Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.
| Score range | Classification | Share of people | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 – 114 | Average | ~68% | The range most people fall into. |
| 115 – 129 | Above average | ~13.6% | Roughly one person in seven. |
| 130 – 144 | Gifted | ~2% | The threshold most high-IQ societies use. |
| Above 144 | Highly gifted | ~0.1% | Figures above this range are extrapolated from the curve rather than measured. |
Percentages are approximate and describe a normal distribution. The same number means different things on tests with different standard deviations.
Thirty questions gives you a measured position on this exact scale — your score, your percentile and the ability breakdown behind it.

Philip Anthony Hopkins was born on December 31, 1937, in the Margam district of Port Talbot, Wales. He was educated at Cowbridge Grammar School in the Vale of Glamorgan, graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 1957, and did two years of National Service between 1958 and 1960. He then studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London from 1961 to 1963. Wikidata lists his occupations as including actor, composer and painter.
Wikipedia quotes him on his school years: “I was a poor learner, which left me open to ridicule and gave me an inferiority complex.” School results and IQ are separate measures, so a poor record is missing evidence here, not a low score. His reputation came from film. He won Best Actor for The Silence of the Lambs (1991) at the 64th Academy Awards on March 30, 1992, the night the film also took Best Picture, Directing, Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress for Jodie Foster.
His other Oscar nominations were Best Actor for The Remains of the Day (66th Academy Awards, 1994) and Nixon (68th, 1996), and Best Supporting Actor for Amistad (70th, 1998) and The Two Popes (92nd, 2020). He won a second Best Actor award for The Father at the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25, 2021. Wikidata lists a CBE in 1987; Wikipedia says he was knighted in 1993 and received the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2006 and the BAFTA Fellowship in 2008.
Wikipedia reports that he goes over his lines “as many times as is needed (sometimes upwards of 200).” That is a rehearsal habit, and how memory relates to IQ is a separate question. Music is his second craft: he is quoted as saying, “I’ve been composing music all my life.” EFE reports that, to keep his brain active, he plays piano, paints or memorizes Dylan Thomas poems. He is 88 as of October 2026.
Anthony Hopkins: the documented record
The estimate above rests on this record. Every entry here is a matter of public fact, which is more than can be said for the number itself.

Why no figure circulates
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Anthony Hopkins’s IQ score has never been published, and the celebrity-IQ lists we opened do not give him one. sociosite.net, Popwire (March 10, 2026), Fiction Horizon and check-iq.org each list celebrities or actors by IQ, and he is on none of them. How such numbers normally spread is covered in where celebrity IQ numbers come from: figures are copied from list to list. For Hopkins there is no copied figure to trace.
The only IQ-labeled numbers near his name rate films, not the man. TV Intelligentsia’s page “Best Anthony Hopkins Films, Ranked by IQ Score” (updated August 19, 2026) puts The Father first at 173/200, and the page text we read does not define that scale. Interest in his IQ probably also comes from Hannibal Lecter, the role that won him his first Oscar. This site rates that fictional psychiatrist at 175–195, but the range belongs to a character Thomas Harris wrote, not to the actor.
Hopkins has not claimed a genius-level IQ for himself. A report by EFE and The Clinic dated March 15, 2021 quotes him: “Actuar no requiere ser un genio ni un gran esfuerzo intelectual” (acting does not require being a genius or a great intellectual effort). It also quotes him, “Cuando llegas a los 83 años, no sé si eres más listo o más estúpido” (when you reach 83, I do not know if you are smarter or more stupid). Opinions about intelligence, including a person’s own, are not test results.
Placed beside other actors here, the record supports 120–135, level with Robin Williams. The two crossed twice: Hopkins won Best Actor over Williams (nominated for The Fisher King) at the 64th Academy Awards, and Williams won Best Supporting Actor at the 70th, on March 23, 1998, with Hopkins nominated for Amistad. The range sits below Meryl Streep’s 125–140 and Rowan Atkinson’s 125–140, whose records include completed degrees; his shows drama-school training and no university degree in the sources we read.
How we read a number →Each page lists Anthony Hopkins: winner of Best Actor for The Silence of the Lambs (March 30, 1992) and The Father (April 25, 2021); nominee for Best Actor for The Remains of the Day (March 21, 1994) and Nixon (March 25, 1996); nominee for Best Supporting Actor for Amistad (March 23, 1998, won by Robin Williams) and The Two Popes (February 9, 2020, won by Brad Pitt). The 1992 page also lists Jodie Foster as Best Actress winner for the same film.
Birth (December 31, 1937, Margam, Port Talbot); Cowbridge Grammar School; Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (graduated 1957); National Service 1958–1960; RADA 1961–1963; knighthood in 1993; the “poor learner” quote; “upwards of 200” line rehearsals; “I’ve been composing music all my life”; the 2006 DeMille Award and 2008 BAFTA Fellowship. No mention of IQ or Mensa in the portion read.
Identifies Q65932 as “Welsh actor (born 1937)”, born December 31, 1937 in Port Talbot; lists occupations including composer and painter; educated at RADA (ending 1963), Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Cowbridge Grammar School; CBE (1987), BAFTA Fellowship (2008), Cecil B. DeMille Award (2006). No IQ statement.
Spanish-language report of a 2021 interview. Quotes Hopkins: acting “does not require being a genius or a great intellectual effort”; and that at 83 he does not know if one is smarter or more stupid. Says that, to keep his brain active, he plays piano, paints or memorizes Dylan Thomas poems. Translations are ours; no IQ is mentioned.
Hopkins does not appear on any of the four pages we opened, so none supplies a figure for him. Popwire’s disclaimer: “These are public, reported IQ figures, not sealed medical records.”
Warns that “many of these IQ test score results are unverified or are estimates based on other sources of information.” Its score table did not render in the text we received, so we could not check whether Hopkins is listed.
Ranks his films by an “IQ Score” and puts The Father first at 173/200. The page text we read does not define the scale; these are ratings of films, not an IQ for Hopkins.
The ranges used for comparison: Hannibal Lecter 175–195 (Character analysis, fiction), Robin Williams 120–135, Meryl Streep 125–140, Rowan Atkinson 125–140 and Jodie Foster 130–145 (all Achievement and academic record).
No school, testing-body, clinical or media record of an administered IQ test, and no Mensa claim, turned up in the pages checked: the Wikipedia and Wikidata entries (in the portions read), the 2021 EFE interview and the celebrity-IQ lists above.
The sources behind our estimate
The figures that circulate for Anthony Hopkins, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.
No IQ score for Anthony Hopkins turned up on the celebrity-IQ lists we opened. The nearest numbers are film ratings: TV Intelligentsia’s page “Best Anthony Hopkins Films, Ranked by IQ Score” (updated August 19, 2026) puts The Father first at 173/200, a score for a movie, not for him.
We found no published IQ test result for Anthony Hopkins. Four celebrity-IQ pages we opened do not list him: sociosite.net’s list of famous people’s IQ, Popwire’s list of 15 actors (March 10, 2026), Fiction Horizon’s list of about 50 Hollywood actors and check-iq.org’s celebrity page. A fifth, iqtestprep.com (January 10, 2022), warns that “many of these IQ test score results are unverified or are estimates based on other sources of information,” but its score table did not load for us, so we cannot say whether he is in it. Nothing in the parts of his Wikipedia biography and Wikidata entry that we read mentions an IQ test or Mensa.
There is no circulating figure to set beside the range, so the chart shows only this site’s estimate. The range is wide on purpose: it rests on a performer’s record, and the only account of his schooling on file is his own, in which he calls himself a poor learner.

Anthony Hopkins — frequently asked
What is Anthony Hopkins’s IQ?
Anthony Hopkins’s IQ has never been published: no test result exists, and the celebrity-IQ lists we opened give him no score. What is documented is training at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and RADA, two Best Actor Oscars and six nominations. This site’s estimated IQ range for him is 120–135, an inference from that record.
What is Anthony Hopkins’s IQ score?
No IQ score for Anthony Hopkins is on record. The only IQ-labeled numbers near his name rate films, such as TV Intelligentsia’s 173/200 for The Father, and they score the movie, not the man. Treat any score attached to him as a guess unless it names a test, a tester and a date.
What is Anthony Hopkins’s IQ level?
No tested IQ level exists for him. This site’s estimate is 120–135, which on a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 would fall between roughly the top 9% and the top 1%. It is an inference from his training, awards and career, not a measurement.
Is Anthony Hopkins a genius?
Nothing published shows a genius-level IQ. His record is exceptional in craft: two Best Actor Oscars, six nominations and a knighthood in 1993. A March 2021 EFE report quotes him saying that acting does not require being a genius, and Wikipedia quotes him describing himself as a poor learner at school.
Did Anthony Hopkins take an IQ test?
No IQ test is documented for him. We found no school, testing-body or media record of one and no Mensa claim, and the parts of his Wikipedia biography, Wikidata entry and 2021 EFE interview that we read do not mention one. Any score quoted for him is unsourced.
Is Anthony Hopkins as smart as Hannibal Lecter?
There is no way to compare them. This site rates the fictional Hannibal Lecter at 175–195 from traits Thomas Harris wrote, while its estimate for Hopkins, 120–135, comes from a real record with no test in it. Playing a brilliant psychiatrist, even for an Oscar, shows acting craft rather than the character’s intelligence.
What did Anthony Hopkins study, and how many Oscars has he won?
He graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 1957 and studied at RADA in London from 1961 to 1963. He has won two Academy Awards, both for Best Actor, for The Silence of the Lambs (1992 ceremony) and The Father (2021), from six nominations in all.
How does Anthony Hopkins’s estimated IQ compare with Robin Williams’s and Meryl Streep’s?
This site’s 120–135 for Hopkins matches Robin Williams’s 120–135 and sits a little below Meryl Streep’s 125–140. Streep’s record includes two drama degrees, while Hopkins trained at drama schools and Williams left Juilliard without a degree. All three figures are estimates from public records, not scores.
How does my IQ compare with Anthony Hopkins?
You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.
