What is Meryl Streep’s IQ?
Two drama degrees and a record 21 Oscar nominations. The 143 that circulates has neither a test nor a date.

Meryl Streep’s IQ score is given as 143 on celebrity-IQ lists, but none of the pages that print it names a test, a tester or a date. What is documented is a Vassar AB in drama (1971), a Yale School of Drama MFA (1975) and a record 21 Academy Award nominations with three wins: a record of craft, not an IQ test result.
Meryl Streep’s estimated IQ
- Earned an AB in drama from Vassar College in 1971.
- Completed an MFA in drama at the Yale School of Drama in 1975, after spending 1970 as a visiting student at Dartmouth College.
- Received 21 Academy Award nominations (17 leading, four supporting) and won three Oscars, for Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady, by the Academy’s own count.
- Named a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2011 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014, two institutional honors for a sustained career.
Acting honors measure craft, range and reception, and drama-school admission is judged on audition, so neither is an ability test. This estimated IQ range is an inference from a public record with no test in it; read it as wide and soft, and set below the actors on this site whose records include research or top academic honors.

What an IQ of 125–140 actually means
Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.
Average is 100 by construction, and about two-thirds of people fall between 85 and 115. Take the test to place your own score on this scale.
| Score range | Classification | Share of people | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 – 114 | Average | ~68% | The range most people fall into. |
| 115 – 129 | Above average | ~13.6% | Roughly one person in seven. |
| 130 – 144 | Gifted | ~2% | The threshold most high-IQ societies use. |
| Above 144 | Highly gifted | ~0.1% | Figures above this range are extrapolated from the curve rather than measured. |
Percentages are approximate and describe a normal distribution. The same number means different things on tests with different standard deviations.
Thirty questions gives you a measured position on this exact scale — your score, your percentile and the ability breakdown behind it.

Mary Louise “Meryl” Streep was born on June 22, 1949, in Summit, New Jersey, and attended Bernards High School in Bernardsville after her family moved there in 1963. At Vassar College she drew campus attention in a 1969 production of Miss Julie, spent 1970 as a visiting student at Dartmouth College, and earned her AB in drama in 1971. She then took an MFA in drama at the Yale School of Drama in 1975, appearing in more than a dozen stage productions a year there. Dartmouth later gave her an honorary Doctor of Arts degree, in 1981.
Her professional stage career began in New York in 1975 with Joseph Papp’s production of Trelawny of the Wells, and a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play followed in 1976 for a double bill of 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and A Memory of Two Mondays. She moved to film in Julia (1977), won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for Holocaust (1978), and received her first Academy Award nomination, for The Deer Hunter (1978).
The Academy’s own count is 21 acting nominations, 17 for leading roles and four for supporting roles, the most of any performer, with three wins: Best Supporting Actress for Kramer vs. Kramer at the 52nd Academy Awards (April 14, 1980), Best Actress for Sophie’s Choice at the 55th (April 11, 1983) and Best Actress for The Iron Lady at the 84th (February 26, 2012). Other nominated performances include Silkwood (1983), Out of Africa (1985), The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and Doubt (2008); her 21st nomination, for The Post (2017), was still her most recent as of October 2026.
Her other honors include the Kennedy Center Honors in 2011, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (announced November 10, 2014 and presented at the White House on November 24), the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2004, the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2017 and an honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2024. She is a former Vassar trustee and received the college’s Distinguished Achievement Award on October 13, 2022. As of October 2026 her most recent major releases are the Pixar film Hoppers (March 6, 2026), in which she voiced Queen Butterfly, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1, 2026), in which she reprised Miranda Priestly. A record like that shows skill, range and recognition; intelligence is broader than any single score, and acting honors do not stand in for one.
Meryl Streep: the documented record

Where the 143 figure came from
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Meryl Streep’s IQ of 143 is repeated across celebrity-IQ lists, and not one of the pages that prints it cites a test. The oldest copies we could open are a Catchplay list dated September 8, 2016 and a Vietnamese article dated September 26, 2017; famouspeopletoday.com still carries the number in a list updated May 21, 2024, and an Italian article from August 17, 2022 credits Elle without naming an article. This is the pattern described in where celebrity IQ numbers come from: a figure appears, gets copied, and the copying becomes its authority.
How the 143 is justified is the revealing part. famouspeopletoday.com sets it beside a paragraph about her 21 Oscar nominations and her Yale MFA, and the 2016 Catchplay list says that with an IQ of 143 “portraying the Iron Lady was not difficult for her.” That runs the logic backward: a film role, an award count and a degree are offered as evidence for a number that was never measured. Opinions about someone’s intelligence, admiring or otherwise, are not test results, and no published IQ test result for Streep turns up in any page checked for this profile.
The record that does exist invites comparison with other actors here who studied at selective schools. Natalie Portman finished a Harvard psychology degree and co-authored published research; Jodie Foster graduated from Yale magna cum laude in 1985 with a thesis on Toni Morrison. Streep’s degrees are in drama, awarded on performance rather than research. A score near an IQ of 140 would be high, but that is a statement about a hypothetical number, not a measurement of her.
Note the direction of the error. The documented record supports a range, 125–140, whose upper end sits just below the circulating 143, because what survives checking is arts training and professional recognition rather than an academic or test record. That is the usual result once a celebrity IQ figure is sourced, even when, as here, the distance between the claim and the evidence is short.
How we read a number →States her record 21 Oscar nominations for acting (17 leading, four supporting) and that she is a three-time Oscar winner.
Each lists Meryl Streep as the winner: Supporting Actress for Kramer vs. Kramer (April 14, 1980), Actress for Sophie’s Choice (April 11, 1983) and Actress for The Iron Lady (February 26, 2012).
Confirms class of 1971, a drama major, her service as a former College trustee, and the Distinguished Achievement Award received October 13, 2022.
Names Streep among the recipients and says the awards would be presented at the White House on November 24; notes her record for Academy Award nominations.
Source for the AB (1971), Yale MFA (1975), Dartmouth visiting year and honorary degree, the 1976 Tony nomination, the Holocaust Emmy, the Oscar table, the Hoppers and Devil Wears Prada 2 release dates, and for the absence of any IQ or Mensa mention.
Give her Kennedy Center Honors year as 2011 (with Barbara Cook, Neil Diamond, Yo-Yo Ma and Sonny Rollins), the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2004, the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2017 and the honorary Palme d’Or in 2024.
The film page gives the May 1, 2026 US release and Streep as Miranda Priestly; the Vassar piece confirms she reprised the role and that she is a Vassar ’71 alumna, former trustee and Commencement speaker.
Used for the comparison: Yale degree in 1985, magna cum laude, with a thesis on Toni Morrison.
All state 143 with no test, tester or date. famouspeopletoday.com updated May 21, 2024; Catchplay dated September 8, 2016 (“portraying the Iron Lady was not difficult for her”); baophapluat.vn September 26, 2017; donnaglamour.it August 17, 2022, crediting Elle without a traceable article.
No school, testing-body, clinical or media record of an administered IQ test, and no Mensa claim, turned up in the pages checked; her Wikipedia biography contains no IQ or Mensa mention.
The sources behind our estimate
The figures that circulate for Meryl Streep, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.
143 is the figure that recurs across celebrity-IQ lists: famouspeopletoday.com (“34 Celebrities With High IQ,” last updated May 21, 2024), the German sites t-online.de and desired.de, a September 26, 2017 article on baophapluat.vn, an August 17, 2022 article on donnaglamour.it that credits Elle, and a September 8, 2016 list on a Catchplay blog.
We found no published IQ test result for Meryl Streep. None of the six pages opened names a test, a tester or a date. famouspeopletoday.com prints “#21 Meryl Streep – 143 IQ” above a paragraph about her Oscar nominations and her 1975 Yale MFA; t-online.de writes that she “hat einen IQ von 143”; desired.de gives “IQ: 143”; baophapluat.vn calls it “an admirable IQ of 143” (translated); donnaglamour.it gives 143 and points to Elle, with no article or test attached; and the Catchplay list writes “With an IQ of 143, portraying the Iron Lady was not difficult for her,” using a film role as the proof. Her Wikipedia biography does not mention an IQ test or Mensa membership at all.
The circulating 143 sits just above the top of the documented-record range. The gap is small, and that is the point: nothing in the record rules out a high figure, and nothing in it measures one. As usual, the sourced record supports a range that tops out below the repeated number.

Meryl Streep — frequently asked
What is Meryl Streep’s IQ?
No IQ test result for Meryl Streep has ever been published. The figure that circulates is 143, repeated on celebrity-IQ lists with no test, tester or date. What is documented is a Vassar AB in drama (1971), a Yale School of Drama MFA (1975) and a record 21 Oscar nominations; this site infers a range of 125–140 from that record.
Did Meryl Streep take an IQ test?
No Meryl Streep IQ test appears in any record we found. None of the six pages that print 143 names a test, a tester or a date, no Mensa claim turned up, and her Wikipedia biography does not mention one. Any score attached to her name is a repetition or an estimate, not a result.
Where does Meryl Streep’s IQ score of 143 come from?
It traces to celebrity-IQ lists, not a test. The oldest copies we opened are dated September 2016 and September 2017; famouspeopletoday.com still lists it in 2024, and an Italian article from 2022 credits Elle without naming an article. One list pairs the number with her role in The Iron Lady, which is a credit, not a measurement.
Is Meryl Streep smart?
Her documented record shows sustained achievement: an AB in drama from Vassar (1971), an MFA from the Yale School of Drama (1975), 21 Oscar nominations and three wins. That is a record of skill, discipline and recognition. It does not measure IQ, which is why this page gives a range of 125–140 rather than a single number.
Is Meryl Streep a genius?
Nothing published shows that. Her acting record is exceptional, with three Academy Awards and a record 21 nominations, but film honors are not an ability test and no IQ level has been published for her. Calling anyone a genius from credits alone describes a reputation, not a measurement.
What degrees does Meryl Streep have?
Meryl Streep earned an AB in drama from Vassar College in 1971 and an MFA in drama from the Yale School of Drama in 1975. Dartmouth College, where she was a visiting student in 1970, awarded her an honorary Doctor of Arts degree in 1981.
How many Oscars has Meryl Streep won?
Meryl Streep has won three Oscars from a record 21 acting nominations: Best Supporting Actress for Kramer vs. Kramer (1980 ceremony), Best Actress for Sophie’s Choice (1983) and Best Actress for The Iron Lady (2012), according to the Academy’s own count and ceremony pages.
How does Meryl Streep’s estimated IQ compare with Jodie Foster’s and Natalie Portman’s?
This site estimates Streep at 125–140, a little below Jodie Foster (130–145; Yale, magna cum laude, 1985) and Natalie Portman (135–145; Harvard psychology degree and published research). The difference reflects the evidence: their records include top academic honors or research, while Streep’s rests on arts degrees and professional awards.
