What is Jaylen Brown’s IQ?
Jaylen Brown’s “too smart for the league” label comes from 2016 draft previews, not from an IQ test.

Jaylen Brown’s IQ score has never been published, and the “iq of court” that fans also search for is basketball IQ, a scouting term, not a test result. What is documented is a graduate-level seminar taken as a Cal freshman in 2015, an MIT Media Lab fellowship in 2019 and the 2024 NBA Finals MVP award; this site’s estimated IQ for Jaylen Brown is 105–125.

IQ Metrics estimate105–125Achievement and academic record
What the estimate rests on
  • University of California, Berkeley, 2015–16: as a freshman he took a graduate-level course, Cultural Studies of Sport in Education, part of a master’s program that no freshman had taken before and that needed the dean’s approval; he wrote a 20-page paper for it (San Francisco Chronicle, March 8, 2016; ESPN, September 21, 2020).
  • Wheeler High School, Marietta, Georgia: a Gatorade state-award release carried by the Georgia High School Association says he “maintained a B average in the classroom”. That is a modest school record, reported second-hand, with no GPA, class rank or SAT or ACT score from any named source.
  • A talk at the Harvard Graduate School of Education on March 1, 2018, and a place among the 11 MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellows announced on July 1, 2019, with a formal two-year affiliation (Harvard Crimson; MIT News). These are invitations, not test results.
  • Elected a vice president of the National Basketball Players Association on February 18, 2019 and re-elected for a third three-year term on February 16, 2025 (NBPA).
  • Third overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft; 2024 NBA champion and Finals MVP; five-time All-Star (2021, 2023–2026); All-NBA Second Team in 2023 and 2026. Basketball success shows elite skill, which constrains general ability only loosely.

This Jaylen Brown IQ estimate rests on one college year, a reported B-average school record and invitations and elected posts that show intellectual engagement, not a measured score. No SAT, ACT, GPA or IQ test is published, and basketball skill says little about general ability, so the band is 20 points wide. Records of this kind usually support a modest range, not a high one.

Background

Who Jaylen Brown is

Jaylen Marselles Brown was born on October 24, 1996, in Marietta, Georgia, and attended Wheeler High School there. A Gatorade state-award release carried by the GHSA names him the Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the Year, the fourth from Wheeler, says he “maintained a B average in the classroom” and notes that the award weighs academic achievement as well as play. Wikipedia lists McDonald’s All-American (2015), first-team Parade All-American (2015) and Mr. Georgia Basketball (2015) among his high school honors.

He enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, for 2015–16. That fall he joined Derek Van Rheenen’s graduate-level course on the Cultural Studies of Sport in Education, a three-hour class that met on Monday mornings (ESPN, Baxter Holmes, September 21, 2020). The San Francisco Chronicle (Connor Letourneau, March 8, 2016) reported that no freshman had taken the class before, that he needed the dean’s approval and that he wrote a 20-page paper for it. On the court he averaged 14.6 points and 5.4 rebounds, started all 34 games and was Pac-12 Freshman of the Year (Sports Illustrated/AP, April 21, 2016); he declared for the draft after one season. No major, GPA, SAT or ACT score or Cal degree is reported.

The Boston Celtics took him third overall in the 2016 NBA draft, held June 23, 2016 at the Barclays Center. He made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2017, was named an All-Star five times (2021, 2023–2026) and earned All-NBA Second Team honors in 2023 and 2026. In the 2024 NBA Finals the Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks four games to one, ending June 17, and Brown was Finals MVP, averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5 assists, after also being named Eastern Conference finals MVP. The Celtics traded him to the Philadelphia 76ers on July 6, 2026, in a deal that sent Paul George to Boston; as of October 2026, NBA.com lists him with the 76ers as a guard-forward wearing No. 7.

Away from games, his documented institutional roles are these. On March 1, 2018 he spoke at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in an evening event titled “One on One with Jaylen Brown: Athlete and Intellectual” (Harvard Crimson, March 2, 2018; CBS Boston, March 1, 2018). On February 18, 2019 the National Basketball Players Association elected him a vice president, and he was re-elected on February 16, 2025 for a third three-year term. On July 1, 2019 MIT announced 11 new Media Lab Director’s Fellows, Brown among them, with a formal two-year affiliation with the lab; the Media Lab’s own profile lists interests that include Spanish, history, finance, technology, meditation and philosophy. No page confirms a degree or a completed executive-education course.

Where it came from

Why no figure circulates

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Jaylen Brown in a white Boston Celtics number 7 jersey with both arms raised during a game against the Washington Wizards on January 23, 2022

Jaylen Brown’s IQ has never been published, and no page prints a Jaylen Brown IQ score, so there is no number to trace; what exists is a reputation. NBC Sports’ ProBasketballTalk (Rob Dauster, June 22, 2016) wrote before the draft that some NBA decision-makers thought he “may be too smart for the league”, a perception passed along in a scouting preview, not a measurement. CBS Sports (Adi Joseph, February 16, 2018) relayed an anonymous assistant general manager who called him “extremely intelligent” and “inquisitive”, and Brown himself called the idea “a narrative”. Reputation is how celebrity IQ numbers usually start, and a later page can turn a word like “smart” into a figure; for Brown, none has.

How smart is Jaylen Brown, according to the pages that go furthest? Distractify (Joseph Allen, June 6, 2024) writes that “some have suggested” he is a genius and that he was valedictorian of his high school class, and gives no IQ number, test or school record for either claim. The only school figure on record is a “B average” in a Gatorade state-award release carried by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA), which sits awkwardly with a valedictorian claim; neither is a transcript. No Jaylen Brown IQ test, SAT or ACT result is on record. If an SAT score were ever published, the SAT-to-IQ conversion page explains what such a score can and cannot say about IQ.

Jaylen Brown’s basketball IQ is a separate thing, and the “iq of court” searches mean it. Basketball IQ is a coaching and scouting phrase for game-specific skill and awareness, which scouts also call “feel for the game”: how a player uses his physical tools and makes decisions. Crafted NBA, which publishes a “BBall IQ” trait for players, says its stat measures game-specific skills and awareness, is “not an assessment of personal intellect” and does not evaluate general intelligence. The 2016 previews show how far the two come apart: the same NBC Sports piece that raised the “too smart” worry also said he did not yet have “a great feel for the game”, and the Celtics still took him third overall that June. Skill in one game is also narrower than general ability (specific abilities versus g).

Jaylen Brown’s estimated IQ, 105–125, overlaps Kyrie Irving’s and LeBron James’s 105–120 and Tom Brady’s 110–125, and sits below Frank Lampard’s 115–130, whose page rests on a documented school record. It is far below John Urschel’s 145–160, which rests on a completed doctorate in applied mathematics, and Bill Bradley’s 135–150. The top of Brown’s band reflects a graduate seminar taken at 18 and a run of invitations and elected posts; the bottom reflects that none of them is a test, and grades and invitations are not IQ (achievement tests versus IQ tests). For what a score near the middle of the band means, see an IQ of 115.

Most widely cited—

No Jaylen Brown IQ number circulates. What circulates is a reputation, not a figure: NBC Sports’ ProBasketballTalk (June 22, 2016) wrote that some NBA decision-makers thought he “may be too smart for the league”, CBS Sports (February 16, 2018) relayed an anonymous assistant general manager calling him “extremely intelligent”, and Distractify (June 6, 2024) wrote that “some have suggested” he is a genius.

What we foundNo IQ figure and no test result

No IQ test result, SAT or ACT score, or college GPA for Jaylen Brown is published. The NBA.com player page and bio, the MIT News and MIT Media Lab pages, the NBPA announcements, Wikipedia and Wikidata, the San Francisco Chronicle (March 8, 2016), ESPN (September 21, 2020), the Harvard Crimson and CBS Boston (March 2018), NBC Sports (2016), CBS Sports (2018) and Distractify (2024) state no IQ number. The nearest school figure is a “B average” in a Gatorade state-award release carried by the GHSA. Distractify’s separate claim that he was valedictorian of his high school class cites no school record.

There is no circulating figure to plot, only this site’s band. It is 20 points wide because the evidence is documented but indirect: a graduate seminar, a fellowship and a B-average school record show engagement and ability, and none of them is a score. A narrower band would claim more than one college year can support.

Questions

Jaylen Brown — frequently asked

What is Jaylen Brown’s IQ?

Jaylen Brown’s IQ has not been published: no Jaylen Brown IQ score or IQ test result is on record. From his documented record, which includes a graduate-level seminar taken as a Cal freshman in 2015, a 2019 MIT Media Lab fellowship and the 2024 NBA Finals MVP award, this site estimates 105–125, an inference and not a measurement.

Did Jaylen Brown take an IQ test?

No Jaylen Brown IQ test is documented. No school, team or league has released a score, and no SAT or ACT result or college GPA from a named source exists. The only grade figure found is a “B average” in a Gatorade state-award release; the other test-like record is basketball scouting, which rates play, not intelligence.

What does “basketball IQ” or “Jaylen Brown iq of court” mean?

Basketball IQ is a coaching and scouting phrase for game-specific skill and awareness, what scouts also call “feel for the game”. It is not an IQ-test result. Crafted NBA’s BBall IQ page says it is “not an assessment of personal intellect”, and a 2016 NBC Sports draft preview praised Brown’s mind yet said he lacked “a great feel for the game” at that point.

Is Jaylen Brown smart?

The record shows intellectual engagement more than a number: a graduate-level seminar as a Cal freshman, a talk at the Harvard Graduate School of Education on March 1, 2018, a 2019 MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellowship and an NBPA vice presidency since February 2019. They support a range of 105–125, not a score, because invitations and offices are not IQ test results.

Is Jaylen Brown a genius, and does he have a high IQ?

Nothing published points to a genius-level figure. Distractify (June 2024) wrote that “some have suggested” he is a genius but gave no test, and none exists on record. This site’s estimate for Jaylen Brown, 105–125, runs from just above average to high, well below the 140-plus range often called genius.

What is Jaylen Brown’s education?

Jaylen Brown attended Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia, then the University of California, Berkeley, for one season (2015–16), where he took a graduate-level course as a freshman. He left for the 2016 NBA draft, and no Cal degree, major, GPA, SAT or ACT score is reported. He has been an MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow since 2019.

How does Jaylen Brown’s estimated IQ compare with Kyrie Irving’s, LeBron James’s or Tom Brady’s?

Brown’s range here, 105–125, overlaps Kyrie Irving’s and LeBron James’s 105–120 and Tom Brady’s 110–125, and sits below Frank Lampard’s 115–130. John Urschel (145–160), who completed a doctorate, and Bill Bradley (135–150) are far higher. All of these are estimates from public records, not measured scores.

Which team does Jaylen Brown play for in 2026?

As of October 2026, Jaylen Brown is on the Philadelphia 76ers’ roster as a guard-forward wearing No. 7. The Boston Celtics, who drafted him third overall in 2016, traded him to Philadelphia on July 6, 2026, in a deal that sent Paul George to Boston.

How does my IQ compare with Jaylen Brown?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred.
