What is Benjamin Netanyahu’s IQ?
The best-known source for the 180 is a 2011 Business Insider list that Insider itself walked back ten years later.

No published IQ test result exists for Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu, so every Netanyahu IQ score is an estimate. What the record documents is an MIT S.B. in architecture (1975) and S.M. in management (1976), earned in under four years, and admission to MIT’s political-science doctoral program; together they support an estimated IQ of about 125–140, far below the 180 that circulates.

What the estimate rests on
  • An S.B. in architecture (art and design) from MIT in February 1975, finished in two and a half years after his adviser allowed a double course load in his first semester, and an S.M. in management in May 1976 with a Sloan School thesis, Computerization in the Newspaper Industry, written with Zeev Zurr and advised by Lester C. Thurow (MIT News, June 5, 1996; MIT DSpace).
  • Admission to the doctoral program in MIT’s Department of Political Science after four political-science subjects, before he left MIT in June 1976 (MIT News, June 5, 1996).
  • A National Merit Letter of Commendation in high school (Billy Penn, 2015; Glenside Local, 2023).
  • Work as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group in Boston from 1976 to 1978, after MIT.
  • Three periods as Israel’s prime minister (June 18, 1996 to July 6, 1999; March 31, 2009 to June 13, 2021; and from December 29, 2022, as of September 2026), more than 18 years in all; this shows sustained high-level work, not a test score.

The record shows what he finished and how fast, not how he ranked: no MIT grades, class rank or test score has been published, and the National Merit cutoff for his year is not in the sources found. The range is a judgment from documents, not a measurement.

Background

Who Benjamin Netanyahu is

Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu was born on October 21, 1949 in Tel Aviv. His family lived in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia suburb, from 1956 to 1958 and again from 1963 to 1967, and he graduated from Cheltenham High School in Wyncote in 1967. The Associated Press reported in 2015 that the yearbook shows him on the debate and soccer teams and in the chess club; Billy Penn adds the science seminar and a National Merit Letter of Commendation. Wikipedia says the cutoff for that recognition is set each year to yield students at about the 96th percentile, the top 50,000 or so of some 1.6 million entrants; the cutoff for his year is not stated in these sources.

He returned to Israel in 1967 to enlist in the Israel Defense Forces and served five years in Sayeret Matkal, an elite special-forces unit, leaving active service in 1972; MIT News and Wikipedia give his rank as captain. That September he enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the surname Nitay. After his adviser allowed a double course load in his first semester, he completed an S.B. in architecture (art and design) in February 1975, two and a half years in, and earned an S.M. in management in May 1976 with the thesis Computerization in the Newspaper Industry, written with Zeev Zurr of Tel Aviv University, advised by Lester C. Thurow and now cataloged in MIT’s DSpace under the Sloan School of Management. He had also taken four political-science subjects and been admitted to the doctoral program in MIT’s Department of Political Science when he ended his studies in June 1976 and returned to Israel. Some sites list Harvard University among his schools; Wikipedia says only that he took courses there while at MIT, and no Harvard degree appears in the sources checked.

From 1976 to 1978 he worked as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group in Boston. He was deputy chief of mission at the Israeli embassy in Washington from 1982 to 1984 and Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations from 1984 to 1988. He has been prime minister in three periods: June 18, 1996 to July 6, 1999; March 31, 2009 to June 13, 2021; and from December 29, 2022, when the third period began. As of September 2026 he is in office (PBS News, September 24, 2026); by Wikipedia’s count of more than 18 years in the post he is Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, and he was the first prime minister born in the State of Israel after its independence.

No cognitive test result for him appears in any source checked for this profile. The MIT News account describes course loads and degrees, the DSpace record describes a thesis, and the National Merit letter is a high-school recognition; none is an IQ score. Admission to MIT and to a doctoral program is selective, but it does not say where a graduate stood among peers; for what MIT-level admission implies about scores, see the site’s article on the average IQ of MIT, Oxford and Yale students, and for research on leaders generally, leader IQ and the sweet spot near 120.

Where it came from

Where the 180 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

Benjamin Netanyahu in his official portrait, photographed on February 1, 2023

The Netanyahu IQ of 180 comes from lists, not from a test. According to the Times of Israel, a Business Insider story first published on April 6, 2011 claimed he has an IQ of 180, and the number then traveled: on December 27 and 29, 2011 the Life in Israel blog and The Muslim Times told readers that Business Insider had placed him among the 19 smartest people in the world, and when a reader asked the blog where the list got its information, the author answered that he did not know. Haredim 10, an Israeli news site, looked at the list in February 2019 and reported that it names no source and describes its numbers as estimates. The pages that repeat the figure add no test either: Celebrity IQs prints a bare 180 with a note that its scores are for entertainment purposes only, and sociosite.net and iqtesta.com credit townhall.com without naming an article.

Ten years later the story’s own publisher backed away from it. The Times of Israel (Tal Schneider, November 17, 2021) reported that Business Insider, which was then styling itself Insider, had put an editor’s note on the 2011 story, and that Israeli journalist Roy Barak, who first asked about it two years earlier, had received a reply saying the claims would be disavowed. The note says the story “does not meet Insider’s current editorial standards,” that Insider no longer publishes stories ranking individuals by purported intelligence, and that the sourcing and ranking methodology would not stand up to its present scrutiny; Insider left the story online for transparency. The Times of Israel adds that other outlets had cited it in describing him as a genius. The note does not say what his IQ is, but it withdraws support from the publisher most often named as the source of the number.

A different origin has been suggested twice. Daniel Frank’s blog post of April 3, 2014 on the Times of Israel’s blogs platform traces the 180 to a 1999 article by Michael Hirsh about Ehud Barak, and Haredim 10 raised the same possible confusion with Barak in 2019. The article is real: Hirsh’s Newsweek piece of May 30, 1999, The General Takes Charge, gives Barak a 180 IQ in a single descriptive clause, names no test and mentions IQ nowhere else. Neither commentator shows that Business Insider drew on it, so the Barak link is a hypothesis about how a descriptor may have become a statistic, not a finding.

A 180 is an extreme claim before it is an unsourced one. On the 15-point scale a 180 is 5.3 standard deviations above the mean, about 1 person in 21 million (see how rare a high IQ score is), while the top of this page’s range, an IQ of 140, is about 1 in 260. A figure that precise needs a named test, an examiner and a date, and none is attached. For how numbers like this spread, see the site’s article on where celebrity IQ numbers come from. As in most profiles here, the documented record supports a range well below the circulating figure: 125–140 puts Netanyahu’s IQ level above the 115–130 this site gives Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, just under the 130–145 given to Barack Obama, and below the 135–150 for Henry Kissinger, another statesman with a circulating 180.

Secondary“After 10 years, US publication walks back claim that Netanyahu has genius IQ”, Tal Schneider, The Times of Israel, November 17, 2021 (updated November 21)

Reports that Business Insider’s story of April 6, 2011 claimed an IQ of 180 and now carries an editor’s note, gives the note’s reasons, says Israeli journalist Roy Barak had asked about it two years earlier, and says other outlets had cited it. Business Insider’s own page could not be opened for this profile, so its contents are taken from this report and from Haredim 10.

PrimaryHirsh, M., “The General Takes Charge,” Newsweek, May 30, 1999

Describes Ehud Barak with a 180 IQ in one descriptive clause; the article contains no other reference to IQ and names no test. Two commentators suggest the 180 later attached itself to Netanyahu by confusion.

SecondaryFrank, D., “Bibi and The 180 IQ,” The Times of Israel (Blogs), April 3, 2014; Haredim 10, “Legend or truth: Is Netanyahu really a genius with the sixth highest IQ in the world?”, February 17, 2019

Frank traces the 180 to the 1999 Hirsh article on Barak but does not reproduce it. Haredim 10 examined Business Insider’s list, reports that it names no source and calls the IQs estimates, raises the same possible confusion with Barak and cites a commentator’s conclusion that the claim is probably an urban legend.

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for Benjamin Netanyahu, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited180

180 is the figure that circulates. Celebrity IQs prints a bare 180; sociosite.net and iqtesta.com give 180 and credit townhall.com; two December 2011 blog posts say Business Insider put him among the 19 smartest people in the world; and scientific.place shows an estimate of 144 credited to cogniDNA.

What we foundNo test result, and a 2011 list its publisher walked back

No published IQ test result exists for Netanyahu. The 180 is most often traced to Business Insider’s list of famous people’s IQs, first published on April 6, 2011. Haredim 10 reported in February 2019 that the list gives no source and calls its numbers estimates; the Times of Israel reported on November 17, 2021 that Insider had added an editor’s note saying the story no longer meets its standards. Celebrity IQs says its scores are for entertainment purposes only, sociosite.net and iqtesta.com credit townhall.com without naming an article (a search found none), and the 144 on scientific.place shows no method. Not one of these pages names a test, an examiner or a test date.

Also published elsewhere

The circulating numbers sit 4 to 40 points above the top of this range. The 144 is an estimate credited to cogniDNA, with no method shown on the page that carries it; the 180 is a bare figure with no test attached. On the 15-point scale a 180 is 5.3 standard deviations above the mean, about 1 person in 21 million, and a claim that exact would need a named test, an examiner and a date.

Questions

Benjamin Netanyahu — frequently asked

What is Benjamin Netanyahu’s IQ?

No published IQ test result exists for Benjamin Netanyahu, so any figure is an estimate. The 180 that circulates traces to a 2011 Business Insider list that Insider later walked back. From his documented record, including two MIT degrees and admission to MIT’s political-science doctoral program, IQ Metrics estimates about 125–140.

What did Business Insider say about Netanyahu’s IQ?

According to the Times of Israel, a Business Insider story first published on April 6, 2011 claimed he has an IQ of 180. By November 17, 2021 Insider had added an editor’s note saying the story no longer meets its standards and that its sourcing and ranking methodology would not withstand current scrutiny.

Is Netanyahu’s estimated IQ 180 or 144?

Neither is a measurement. The 180 comes from the 2011 Business Insider list; the 144 appears on scientific.place, credited to cogniDNA, with no method stated there. IQ Metrics’ estimate from his documented record is 125–140, below both, and it is a range inferred from achievements, not a test score.

Did Benjamin Netanyahu take an IQ test?

No IQ test result for him appears in any source checked. The nearest test-linked item is a National Merit Letter of Commendation from high school, reported by two local outlets; it is a recognition, not an IQ score. His MIT record describes degrees and course loads, not test scores.

What are Benjamin Netanyahu’s qualifications?

He holds an S.B. in architecture (February 1975) and an S.M. in management (May 1976) from MIT, and was admitted to MIT’s political-science doctoral program but left in June 1976. He consulted for the Boston Consulting Group from 1976 to 1978 and served five years in Sayeret Matkal before MIT.

How does Benjamin Netanyahu’s estimated IQ compare with Donald Trump’s and Vladimir Putin’s?

IQ Metrics estimates Netanyahu at 125–140 from his MIT degrees and doctoral admission, above the 115–130 it gives Donald Trump (a Wharton bachelor’s degree) and Vladimir Putin (a law degree), and just under the 130–145 it gives Barack Obama. All are estimates from documented records, not test scores.

Is Benjamin Netanyahu a genius?

Genius is a label, not a score, and no test result exists to place him there. The record documents two MIT degrees in under four years and a doctoral admission, which support an estimated IQ of 125–140. The 180 that would signal genius-level IQ has no named test behind it.

How does my IQ compare with Benjamin Netanyahu?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other politics profiles, starting with Thomas Jefferson.
