What is Robert Downey Jr.’s IQ?
The character finished MIT at 17. The actor left school in 1982.

No published IQ test result exists for Robert Downey Jr., and the 186 and 270 that surface online belong to Tony Stark, not to him. What is documented is a high school he left in 1982, an Oscar in 2024 after nominations for Chaplin and Tropic Thunder, and a Broadway debut, which support an estimated IQ of about 115–130.
Robert Downey Jr.’s estimated IQ
- Schooling: he attended Santa Monica High School and left it in 1982; Fox News (January 14, 2024) says he dropped out of high school and moved to New York to pursue acting. No college or degree is on record, which is why this range has no academic anchor.
- Awards: the Oscars site lists him as a Best Actor nominee for Chaplin at the 65th Academy Awards (March 29, 1993), a Best Supporting Actor nominee for Tropic Thunder at the 81st (February 22, 2009) and the Best Supporting Actor winner for Oppenheimer at the 96th (March 10, 2024). The Golden Globes site lists three wins: Ally McBeal (2001), Sherlock Holmes (2010) and Oppenheimer (2024).
- Stage: he played the title role in Ayad Akhtar’s McNeal at the Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center from September 5 to November 24, 2024, in a production directed by Bartlett Sher; Wikipedia counts 23 previews and 53 regular performances for the run.
- Producing: His production company, Team Downey, dates from 2010, with The Judge (2014) as its first production and Dolittle (2020) as its second.
Acting honors reward performance and timing as well as cognitive ability, and the record has no degree, school test score or authored work to anchor either end of the range. Playing Sherlock Holmes, Tony Stark and Doctor Doom shows casting, not a score.

What an IQ of 115–130 actually means
Set the claim aside for a moment. If someone genuinely scored in this range, here is what that would represent.
| Score range | Classification | Share of people | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 – 114 | Average | ~68% | The range most people fall into. |
| 115 – 129 | Above average | ~13.6% | Roughly one person in seven. |
| 130 – 144 | Gifted | ~2% | The threshold most high-IQ societies use. |
| Above 144 | Highly gifted | ~0.1% | Figures above this range are extrapolated from the curve rather than measured. |
Percentages are approximate and describe a normal distribution. The same number means different things on tests with different standard deviations.
Thirty questions gives you a measured position on this exact scale — your score, your percentile and the ability breakdown behind it.

Robert John Downey Jr. was born in Manhattan on April 4, 1965. He made his screen debut at five in the film Pound (1970). He attended Santa Monica High School, dropped out in 1982 and moved to New York to pursue acting. The stage came first: a three-week run in Alms for the Middle Class at the Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York, in 1983, then the off-Broadway musical American Passion at the Joyce Theater, with a first credited film role in Baby It’s You (1983). John Hughes’s Weird Science (1985) was his breakthrough, and he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1985.
The role that first put him in the Oscar race was Charlie Chaplin in Richard Attenborough’s Chaplin (1992), for which he learned to play the violin and tennis left-handed and worked with a coach on Chaplin’s accent. The performance won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor and brought nominations for the Golden Globe (Best Actor – Drama) and the Academy Award for Best Actor, decided at the 65th Academy Awards on March 29, 1993, where Al Pacino won for Scent of a Woman. Charlie Chaplin himself is profiled here at 130–145. Downey’s second nomination was for Best Supporting Actor in Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder (2008), at the 81st Academy Awards on February 22, 2009, where Heath Ledger won for The Dark Knight.
Iron Man, directed by Jon Favreau, opened in the United States on May 2, 2008, and began a run as Tony Stark that continued through Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). He also played the detective in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011); the Golden Globes site lists a 2010 win for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for the first film. In 2010 he and a partner also opened a production company, Team Downey, whose first production was The Judge (2014).
In Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (released July 21, 2023), Downey played Lewis Strauss, a member of the Atomic Energy Commission, and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, 2024, ahead of Sterling K. Brown, Robert De Niro, Ryan Gosling and Mark Ruffalo. The same role also won the Golden Globe, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice awards. In 2024 he played five supporting roles in HBO’s The Sympathizer, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination, and made his Broadway debut as Jacob McNeal in Ayad Akhtar’s McNeal, a play about artificial intelligence, artistic integrity and plagiarism, at Lincoln Center’s Beaumont Theater from September 5 to November 24, 2024. At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, Marvel announced him as Victor von Doom / Doctor Doom for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. As of October 2026, neither film has been released: Doomsday is scheduled for December 18, 2026 in the United States, after a trailer shown at D23 in August 2026, and Secret Wars for December 17, 2027.

Why no figure circulates
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

No published IQ test result exists for Robert Downey Jr., and the figures that surface under his name belong to a fictional engineer. Pages that answer “Robert Downey Jr. IQ” and “RDJ IQ” are mostly about Tony Stark, and Riot IQ (Dr. Russell T. Warne, August 16, 2026) says Marvel “has never published a number” for the character. It traces the 186 to the Marvel fan wiki, where it is attached to the Ultimate-universe version of Stark, and says a listicle that puts him “around 270” cites nothing. Wikipedia’s biography of the actor and his Wikidata entry contain no IQ figure, Mensa membership or school test score. For how such numbers spread, see where celebrity IQ numbers come from.
Robert Downey Jr.’s IQ vs Tony Stark’s is a comparison of a person with a story. In the Marvel films Stark is a prodigy: Wikipedia’s account of the character has him “entering MIT at age 14 and graduating summa cum laude at 17.” The actor’s schooling is shorter and documented: Santa Monica High School, which he left in 1982. Fox News (January 14, 2024) says he dropped out of high school and moved to New York to pursue acting. Leaving school early does not measure ability either way (see how well IQ predicts school success), but it shows why the character’s degrees cannot be lent to the actor. This site rates the character, not the player, on its Tony Stark profile.
A Robert Downey Jr. estimated IQ of 115–130 is built from the record and sits level with other leading men rated by the same method. Tom Cruise, who also has no college degree on record, is 115–130. Matt Damon is 120–135, helped by a Harvard enrollment and a shared Oscar for co-writing Good Will Hunting. Benedict Cumberbatch, who played Sherlock Holmes in the series Sherlock (2010–2017), is 125–140, with drama studies at the Victoria University of Manchester and a master’s in classical acting. Downey’s record has no degree and no authored screenplay, which is why his range is not set higher. A range of 115–130 runs from a score around 115 to one near 130 (see whether 130 is genius level), roughly the 84th to the 98th percentile.
The roles are why the question gets asked, and the roles carry their own numbers. This site rates the fictional Sherlock Holmes at 180–200, Tony Stark at 175–195 and Doctor Doom at 185–205, each by a character-analysis method that rates the writing, not the player. In Oppenheimer, Downey played Lewis Strauss opposite the physicist profiled here as J. Robert Oppenheimer, rated 155–175 on a completed doctorate. A casting choice shows an actor can convey intelligence on screen; it does not hand him the character’s number. Even a real test would add a margin of error of several points to any single figure (see IQ score margin of error).

The sources behind our estimate
The figures that circulate for Robert Downey Jr., what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.
Searches for “Robert Downey Jr. IQ” and “RDJ IQ” mostly return numbers for Tony Stark, the character he played. Riot IQ (Dr. Russell T. Warne, August 16, 2026) traces a 186 to the Marvel fan wiki, where it is attached to the Ultimate-universe version of Stark, and says a listicle’s “around 270” cites nothing.
No published IQ test result exists for Robert Downey Jr. Wikipedia’s biography of him and his Wikidata entry contain no IQ figure, no Mensa membership and no school test score. Riot IQ states that Marvel “has never published a number” for Tony Stark, so even the character’s 186 and 270 are outside estimates, one traced to a fan wiki and one citing nothing. Neither figure describes the actor, who left Santa Monica High School in 1982.
No number circulates for the actor himself, so the spread is only this site’s range: 115–130 runs from about the 84th to the 98th percentile on the usual scale (mean 100, standard deviation 15). The 186 and 270 attached to Tony Stark sit far above it, and they describe a fictional engineer, not a person. As on most profiles here, the documented record supports a range well below the figures that surface.

Robert Downey Jr. — frequently asked
What is Robert Downey Jr.’s IQ?
No Robert Downey Jr. IQ test result has been published, so his IQ is unknown. This site’s estimated IQ range for the actor, often called RDJ, is 115–130, inferred from a high school he left in 1982, an Oscar in 2024 after nominations for Chaplin and Tropic Thunder, and a 2024 Broadway debut. The 186 and 270 online belong to Tony Stark.
Did Robert Downey Jr. take an IQ test?
No published record says so. No IQ result, Mensa membership or school test score appears in his biographies or award records. What is documented is a career: Weird Science in 1985, Chaplin in 1992, Iron Man in 2008 and an Academy Award in 2024.
Is Robert Downey Jr. smart?
The record shows sustained, demanding work rather than a test score: an Academy Award, two BAFTAs, three Golden Globe wins, a title role on Broadway in 2024 and a production company since 2010. He left high school in 1982, so no degree backs it. This page estimates a range of 115–130, not a score.
What is Robert Downey Jr.’s education?
Robert Downey Jr. attended Santa Monica High School and dropped out in 1982, then moved to New York to pursue acting, as Fox News reported in 2024. No college or degree is on record. His training came from work: a regional stage run and an off-Broadway musical in 1983, then Saturday Night Live in 1985.
What is Robert Downey Jr.’s IQ in real life, compared with Tony Stark’s?
The two numbers are not comparable. Riot IQ traces Tony Stark’s 186 to a fan wiki and says an “around 270” estimate cites nothing; this site rates the character at 175–195. The actor’s estimated IQ is 115–130, and the film biography of Stark, MIT at 14, belongs to the character, not to him.
How does Robert Downey Jr.’s estimated IQ compare with Matt Damon’s?
This site estimates Downey at 115–130 and Damon at 120–135, so the ranges overlap between 120 and 130. Both were in Oppenheimer: Downey as Lewis Strauss, Damon as General Leslie Groves. Damon’s range leans on a Harvard enrollment and a shared Oscar for co-writing Good Will Hunting; Downey’s record has no degree or authored screenplay.
How does Robert Downey Jr.’s estimated IQ compare with Doctor Doom’s?
Far below. This site rates Doctor Doom, the Marvel character Downey is cast to play in Avengers: Doomsday, at 185–205 as written, against 115–130 for the actor. As of October 2026 the film is scheduled for U.S. release on December 18, 2026. A role says nothing about the player’s score.
Did Robert Downey Jr. win an Oscar for Oppenheimer?
Yes. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer at the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, 2024, ahead of Sterling K. Brown, Robert De Niro, Ryan Gosling and Mark Ruffalo. It followed nominations for Chaplin (1993) and Tropic Thunder (2009). The prize rewards acting, not IQ.
