How smart is Sundar Pichai, judged only by what can be checked? He was born on June 10, 1972, in Tamil Nadu, India: Wikipedia and Wikidata give Madurai, Britannica (as Wikipedia quotes it) gives Madras, now Chennai, and the Stanford Law School biography says he grew up in Chennai. He took a B.Tech in metallurgical engineering at IIT Kharagpur in 1993. Sanat Kumar Roy, a professor there, told the Times of India in 2014 that Pichai was the brightest of his batch, stood first in the department and received the institute silver medal, and the paper added that his name is on a board of toppers for 1993. The Stanford Law School biography, whose wording repeats Google’s own, also cites an Institute Silver Medal. How closely class standing tracks IQ is a looser question; see whether IQ predicts school success.
From Kharagpur he went to Stanford University for a master’s degree in materials science and engineering; The Stanford Daily lists him as M.S. ’95. The Siebel Scholars Foundation’s biography adds engineering and product-management work at Applied Materials and consulting at McKinsey & Company. He also earned an MBA at the Wharton School, class of 2002, where the foundation lists him as a Siebel Scholar; a Palmer Scholar designation, which Wharton’s current rules give to the top 5% of a class by cumulative GPA, appears in his Stanford Law School biography and on Wikipedia, though we found no 2002 list to confirm it. The floor of this site’s range, an IQ around 135, reflects completed degrees at three selective institutions; the ceiling of 150 reflects the two places where he was ranked against classmates, first in his department at IIT Kharagpur by a professor’s account and the Wharton honors.
He joined Google in 2004 and, Fortune reported in 2014, led the Google Toolbar as a director of product management. By September 1, 2008, when the Google blog announced the Chrome browser in a post signed by him and Linus Upson, he was vice president of product management, and the post said the beta would launch the next day. The same two signed the July 7, 2009 announcement of Chrome OS, and as senior vice president for Chrome and Apps he introduced Google Drive on April 24, 2012. On March 13, 2013 Larry Page announced that Andy Rubin was handing over Android and that Pichai would lead it alongside Chrome and Apps; in October 2014 he took on product and engineering for Google’s Internet businesses. Page announced on August 10, 2015 that Pichai would be CEO of Google, and on December 3, 2019 Page and Brin ended their day-to-day roles, leaving Pichai CEO of both Google and Alphabet.
Outside the company, India’s Padma Awards list for 2022, published on the eve of Republic Day, named him a Padma Bhushan recipient in trade and industry; India’s ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, presented the award in San Francisco on December 2, 2022. IIT Kharagpur conferred an honorary Doctor of Science on him in absentia at its 69th Convocation in December 2023 and presented it in San Francisco on July 23, 2024. As of September 24, 2026 he remains CEO of Google and Alphabet: Google’s July 22, 2026 earnings-call post carries that byline, and a Fortune headline of September 24, 2026 calls him Google’s CEO. Sundar Pichai’s estimated IQ here, 135–150, is inferred from that record and from nothing measured; whether it makes him a genius depends on what genius-level means, a separate question from what a test would return.

Where the 145–160 figure came from
Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.
Sundar Pichai’s IQ appears as a number on very few pages, and none cites a test. iSchoolConnect’s biography, updated March 19, 2025, answers “What is Sundar Pichai’s IQ?” in one line, about 145, which it calls nearly the same range as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg. BrainManager carries two figures on two pages: 145–155 in an article dated April 24, 2025 that concedes his exact score has never been publicly confirmed, and around 160 in entry 38 of its February 27, 2025 list of the 42 smartest people. The comparison that carries the 145 is unanchored: it ties one estimate to three others, which this site puts at Elon Musk’s 140–150, Jeff Bezos’s 145–155 and Mark Zuckerberg’s 135–145. BrainManager’s numbers also disagree with each other. Its article says 145–155 puts a person in the top 0.1–0.25%, but on a scale with a standard deviation of 15 that percentage fits about 142 to 146; a 155 is roughly one person in 8,100, and the 160 in its list, four standard deviations out, about one in 31,600 (see how rare a high IQ score is). A figure that moves fifteen points between two pages of one site is not reading a test.
What can be checked about his rise is Larry Page’s post of August 10, 2015, which says it was clear to the founders and their board that it was time for Sundar to be CEO of Google, after Pichai took on product and engineering for the Internet businesses in October 2014. A promotion is evidence of trust and judgment, not of a score. Placed among the business profiles here, Pichai’s 135–150 matches Peter Thiel’s and overlaps Sam Altman’s 138–150, all three built by the same achievement-and-academic-record method, not from a test. It sits lower than Larry Page’s 145–160 and Sergey Brin’s 150–165, the Google co-founders whose day-to-day roles ended when he became CEO of both companies in 2019. Brin and Page wrote the 1998 Stanford paper that described Google’s search engine; Pichai’s record shows class standing and product leadership but no research of that kind, so his range ends lower.

No published Sundar Pichai IQ test result exists, and no GRE, GMAT or entrance-exam score has been published either. iSchoolConnect gives its 145 as a one-line FAQ answer with no test, date or source, under a headline calling him a college dropout although its text lists a B.Tech, a Stanford master’s and a Wharton MBA. BrainManager’s article says his exact score has never been publicly confirmed, then gives 145–155; its list gives around 160 with only praise for his problem-solving. Searches for “sundar pichai iq level” and “sundar pichai ka iq level” return the same pages; a Devanagari search returned only biographical pages. Wikipedia, Wikidata, Fortune and Google’s own pages mention no IQ test.
