What the estimate rests on
  • A BA in French and Classics from the University of Exeter, which lists the degree on its own alumni entry; Wikidata gives 1983 as her start year there, after Wyedean School and College, where Wikipedia says she was named head girl.
  • A postgraduate teaching certificate (PGCE) from Moray House in Edinburgh, completed in 1996 according to the University of Edinburgh Magazine of Summer 2004.
  • Seven Harry Potter novels published between 1997 and 2007, which her official biography says have sold over 600 million copies; the first, Philosopher’s Stone, was published by Bloomsbury on June 26, 1997 (Wikipedia).
  • Eight Cormoran Strike crime novels under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, from The Cuckoo’s Calling (2013) to The Hallmarked Man (2025), as her official site lists them.
  • An OBE for services to children’s literature (2000 Birthday Honours), a Companion of Honour for services to literature and philanthropy (London Gazette, June 17, 2017) and an honorary Doctor of Letters from Exeter (2000).

This is an inference from achievement, not a measurement. Sales and honors reflect readers, publishers and persistence, no page we opened gives her degree class, and we found no published exam results or test scores. Both circulating figures fall inside or at the top edge of the range, but the true value could lie outside it in either direction.

Background

Who J. K. Rowling is

Joanne Rowling, who writes as J. K. Rowling, was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, Gloucestershire, according to Wikidata. She attended Wyedean School and College, where Wikipedia says she was named head girl, and entered the University of Exeter in 1983 (Wikidata). Exeter lists her degree as a BA in French and Classics. Wikipedia says she graduated in 1987 after a year of study in Paris; Exeter’s own page gives no graduation year. Her official site was still posting news in September 2026.

She trained as a teacher at Moray House in Edinburgh and completed the PGCE in 1996 (University of Edinburgh Magazine, Summer 2004); Wikipedia says she then began teaching at Leith Academy. Bloomsbury published Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on June 26, 1997, with an initial print run of 5,650 copies, and Scholastic bought the US rights. The seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, appeared in July 2007. Her official site says the series has sold over 600 million copies.

As Robert Galbraith she writes the Cormoran Strike crime novels. Her official site lists eight, from The Cuckoo’s Calling (2013) to The Hallmarked Man (2025); the first appeared without its author’s identity being known. She was appointed OBE for services to children’s literature in the 2000 Birthday Honours. On June 17, 2017 she became a Companion of Honour for services to literature and philanthropy (London Gazette). Exeter awarded her a Doctor of Letters in 2000.

Read together, the record anchors a range, not a number: an estimated IQ of 125–145 for J. K. Rowling, a notch below George R. R. Martin (130–150), whose range adds a master’s degree, and well below J.R.R. Tolkien (150–165), whose range rests on two Oxford chairs. How closely IQ and creativity track each other is a separate question, and average IQ by education level describes groups, not one author.

Record

J. K. Rowling: the documented record

The estimate above rests on this record. Every entry here is a matter of public fact, which is more than can be said for the number itself.

  2. 1983Enters the University of Exeter after Wyedean School and College (Wikidata gives 1983 for both).

  8. 2017Named a Companion of Honour on June 17, for services to literature and philanthropy.

Where it came from

Where the 138–145 figure came from

Following a claim back to its first appearance is the part almost nobody does — and it is what most people are actually asking.

J. K. Rowling, smiling, with blonde hair swept to one side, in a cream top with puffed shoulders and drop earrings, reading aloud at the White House Easter Egg Roll in April 2010

The J. K. Rowling IQ score that circulates is not a test result. Two pages give a number: thegeniusindex.com says her IQ is “estimated at around 145,” in the “highly gifted” range, and an anonymous answers.com reply says 138. Neither names a test, an examiner or a date. realiqtest.org (November 16, 2023) gives no number and calls her IQ “not publicly verified.” For how such numbers attach to famous names, see where celebrity IQ numbers come from.

The circulating numbers fall inside or at the top edge of the documented range. The record below supports an estimated IQ of 125–145 for J. K. Rowling, level with Stephen King (125–145), another bestselling novelist placed by a bachelor’s degree and a long list of books. The usual pattern on this site, a circulating figure above the sources, does not hold here: the weakness is the sourcing, not the size. For what the top of the range means, see what an IQ of 140 means.

What would settle the question is a named test, an examiner and a date, or a first-person statement of a score. We found none. Her official biography, the London Gazette, the University of Exeter and the University of Edinburgh describe degrees, books and honors, and none mentions IQ. A character’s intelligence in her novels is written, not measured, and says nothing about the author’s. Whether she reaches a genius IQ level only a test could say.

The sources behind our estimate

The figures that circulate for J. K. Rowling, what we were able to confirm, and where the two diverge.

Most widely cited138–145

Two pages we could open give a number for J. K. Rowling’s IQ. thegeniusindex.com shows an “Estimated Cognitive Quotient 145” and calls it “highly gifted.” An answers.com thread carries one anonymous reply, “138 IQ- JK Rowling,” posted “14y ago.” Neither page names a test, an examiner or a date.

What we foundNo sourced test result

No IQ test result and no self-reported score appears on any page we read. The Genius Index adds only the word “estimated.” realiqtest.org (November 16, 2023) gives no number and says her IQ “is not publicly verified.” The famous-person IQ list on sociosite.net has no entry for her. Her official site, the London Gazette and the Exeter and Edinburgh pages describe degrees, books and honors, and none mentions IQ.

Both circulating figures sit inside the 125–145 range, 138 in the middle and 145 at its top edge, so they are plausible but unsourced, not inflated. Plausible is not evidence: a figure with no test, examiner or date cannot be checked, and the two pages do not agree with each other.

Questions

J. K. Rowling — frequently asked

What is J. K. Rowling’s IQ?

No IQ test result for J. K. Rowling has been published, so her IQ has no measured value. The 145 on thegeniusindex.com and the 138 in an anonymous answers.com reply name no test, date or method. IQ Metrics estimates 125–145 from her Exeter degree, teaching certificate, seven Harry Potter novels and honors: an inference, not a score.

Did Joanne Rowling ever take an IQ test?

There is no public record of one. Her official biography, the London Gazette honors list and the University of Exeter and University of Edinburgh pages describe degrees, books and honors, and none mentions an IQ test or score. Whether she took a private test is unknown, so any J. K. Rowling IQ you see online is not a documented result.

Where does the JK Rowling IQ score of 145 come from?

It comes from thegeniusindex.com, which lists an “Estimated Cognitive Quotient 145” and calls it “highly gifted” without naming a test, method or date. A separate 138 appears in an anonymous answers.com reply. Neither is a measurement; a 2007 list that ranked her 83rd among living geniuses scored factors, not an IQ test.

Is J. K. Rowling a genius?

No IQ test has labeled her one, and “genius” is not a documented status. What is documented is an Exeter degree in French and Classics, a 1996 teaching certificate, seven Harry Potter novels, eight Strike crime novels, an OBE and a Companion of Honour. Those support an estimated IQ of 125–145: high, but not certified.

How smart is J. K. Rowling?

Her documented record shows academic qualifications and sustained output: a BA in French and Classics, a postgraduate teaching certificate, and fifteen published novels across two series, from 1997 to 2025. Smartness is not one number, and the estimated IQ of 125–145 is an inference from that record, not a test result.

How does J. K. Rowling’s estimated IQ compare with Stephen King’s, George R. R. Martin’s or J.R.R. Tolkien’s?

Rowling’s estimated range, 125–145, matches Stephen King’s 125–145, sits a notch below George R. R. Martin’s 130–150 and below J.R.R. Tolkien’s 150–165, which rests on two Oxford chairs. All are inferences from achievement, not test results, so the gaps are smaller than the method can resolve.

Where did J. K. Rowling go to university?

J. K. Rowling studied French and Classics at the University of Exeter, which lists her degree as a BA, and completed a postgraduate teaching certificate (PGCE) at Moray House in Edinburgh in 1996. Exeter gave her an honorary Doctor of Letters in 2000, and Edinburgh gave her an honorary doctorate in 2004.

How does my IQ compare with J. K. Rowling?

You can find out in about fifteen minutes. The IQ Metrics assessment is 30 questions, scored on the same 100-mean scale used throughout this page, so your result and the estimate above are at least expressed in the same units — one measured, one inferred. Once you have a number, the leaderboard shows where it would sit, and how we score and norm it explains the benchmarking.

Where does this estimate come from?

From the documented record rather than a test — the method is named above and set out in full under how we read a number. Compare it against the other writers profiles, starting with Voltaire.
